Bugle Call Rag Composed by Carey Morgan and Eubie Blake Arranged by Jari VillanuevaScore2 Trumpets in BbHorn in FTromboneTubaOptional Drum Set Eb Alto Horn Substitute part for Horn in FTreble Clef Baritone Substitute part for TromboneJames Hubert Eubie Blake (1887-1983) Blake was born in Baltimore to former slaves, and the only child of 11 that would survive to adulthood. The young Eubie taught himself the organ after his parents put a $75 organ in their home for 25 cents per week (which would take them almost 6 years to pay off). By the age of 15 was playing piano in Baltimore's night clubs, holding a regular job at Agnes Shelton's sporting house. Blake was already an exceptional pianist by the early 1900's, and he had to simplify his music drastically to get it published. Blake was among the pioneers of ragtime, however he was often too far ahead of his time. He released two rags (Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz) in the same year which Scott Joplin released his Maple Leaf Rag. Unfortunately for Blake, the competition was too strong. Part of the reason for Blake's Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz not making the big time may have been due to Blake the progressive nature of his sound. People found it hard to digest his music, especially the publishers. Bugle Call Rag was composed in 1916 with Carey Morgan. It was one of many patriotic selections written by composers during the World War I era. This delightful piece uses bugle calls and quotes There’ll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight.A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Grafulla (1810-80) was an outstanding bandmaster mostly known to bandsmen as the composer of The Grand March and Washington Greys. He was known also as a talented arranger and during the war was director of the 7th Regimental Band of the New York State Militia (N.Y.S.M) in New York. This band was considered a pace-setter not only for military but also popular music. Manual of Arms Polka was written for the 7th Regiment in 1862 and incorporates the bugle signals of Assembly, Shoulder Arms, Right Face, Left Face, Right About Face, and Fix Bayonets. Some of these calls are not found in the regulation drill manuals of the day and may have been exclusive to the 7th Regiment. The last section includes the song Comrades Touch the Elbow. This was the song of the 9th Company, 7th Regiment, N.Y.S.M. The song describes how Soldiers would touch the elbow to steady their nerves as they moved forward together in battle. Description The original composition SONATINA explores the transformation of one main idea into different genres through the usage of repetition and variation in order to create contrast. The beginning features a piano intro with front ensemble in accompaniment, followed by the first form of the main theme on solo trumpet which presents a classical idea. Furthermore, the secondary melody comes in a minor tonality, which then mixes with the modified main theme thus creates dissonance. There is then a transition section that features the drumline and the front ensemble in a consistent ostinato pattern to create a smooth key change, which leads into the bright triplet section that has a strong hint of swung feeling. It then transitions into a calm and relaxing ballad section, where it moves beyond the simple triad classical chord progression into sophisticated usage of 7th, 9th and 11th chords to create tension-release cycles. After a short euphonium solo, the climax comes with main theme hidden out-of-phase in the counter-melody line. The closer section comes after the ballad, which explores the feeling of a waltz while having call and answer structures of euphonium and flugelhorn solos. The solos still consists of the modified main theme melody. Finally, it builds up into a climax and finishes with a long hold.Note to Drum Major/ConductorSONATINA for Drum & Bugle Corps is designed to be played in a non-competitive drum and bugle corp. It is suitable for being played in both indoor and outdoor ensembles. Each solo does not have to be played by the same soloist, and every soloist will be equipped with wireless microphones to amplify the sound. The front ensemble will be equipped with microphones but set to be at a lower level than soloists. The drumline will be equipped with sound projector scoops under the drums.
