Classical,Contest,Festival,Jazz. Brass Band. 107 pages. Dale Vail #897836. Published by Dale Vail (A0.1308595). Christchurch Alive! - Brass Band Major WorkPlaying level : Suitable for bands of all levelsParts for British Brass Band, and transposed options for Bass clef Trombone/Euphonium/Baritones/Tubas and Horns in F.Christchurch Alive! was written for the Nor'west Brass Band in 2017 by Dale Vail as the own choice work for their first New Zealand National Brass Band Contest in 2018.Christchurch Alive! is a testimony to the spirit of the Christchurch Community, and their resilience to the life changing earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The piece is built around the harmonic circle of fifths. The circle of fifths is famous for being a common harmonic pattern in both baroque and classical music, and jazz and modern music. Most influentially used by Arcangelo Corelli, the pattern appears commonly in the Johann Sebastian Bach's music, and the works of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi. In the modern age, it is most famously heard in Joseph Kosma's Autumn Leaves. Dale's piece takes the two sides of this famous progression, and links them into one seamless piece of music, symbolising the union of two eras making something new, much like pre-earthquake culture, and new post-earthquake culture, joining together to create a new community. The work opens with a traditional style melody, utilising a modern minor 7th tonality. Tubular bells sound 5 times, a clock tower striking 5am marking the first hour after the first earthquake. The band explodes into a New Orleans style street band theme, showing the nightlife and central city vibrancy that still exists amongst the repairs. This swaps to a Vivaldi inspired melody, using the same circle of 5ths progression, a blend of two different times, old and new buildings forming one city. A solo voice from offstage begins a cadenza, echos of a busker in the old arts centre markets, which brings one intoA nostalgic melody from the flugel. A reflection on what used to be. The circle of fifths becomes a I - V progression, stuck on a continuous loop, illustrating a longing to remember, and to restore what was. The circle begins to move forward again with a solo trombone taking the stage, a reflection on the late night jam sessions from the Christchurch Jazz School on Poplar lane. A Sibelius inspired melody reminds that whilst the past is remembered, it cannot be revisited. The flugel melody is re-harmonized, remembering what made the old Christchurch great, and taking that with us to the new Christchurch. All the themes are revisited and brought together in a vibrant ending, a hybrid of different communities, restored and new landmarks, and a resolve to make the future their own.The city is thriving and more alive than ever.

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1008264 Composed by William Brenner. Contemporary. Score and parts. 80 pages. William Brenner #5370501. Published by William Brenner (A0.1008264). Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path. After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. (...) Across Halifax, there were miraculous stories of survival. And equally, stories of tragedy. Many children were killed on their walk to school that morning, or blinded by flying glass. Those that survived the blast stumbled home, only to find their houses shattered, or their parents dead or wounded, among the wreckage. (...) Every year on 6 December, people gather above the Narrows to hear the ringing of the memorial's carillon bells, and to remember the victims of the disaster. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/halifax-explosion

It opens with a brass and organ fanfare (echoed later by organ alone) and a chant-like choral section. Then the antiphon unfolds—easily sung by the assembly, while the verses offer some meat for SATB choir. Brass Quintet is used well throughout, supporting the antiphons and decorating the verses. Appropriate also for church anniversaries, the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran, Christ the King C, or other festive liturgies. Duration: 8:00.

SATB choir and organ - Moderately Easy - SKU: MQ.8456-E Composed by David Hurd. Building Dedication, African American Heritage, New Year, Wedding. 15 pages. Duration 3 minutes, 20 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8456-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8456-E). English. Psalms 100.This anthem was commissioned by Dorothy Yates to mark the 50th anniversary of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The text is announced by a brief fanfare on the organ. The raised 4th scale degree of the opening theme suggests the Lydian mode and accentuates the music’s upward thrust. Following the opening fanfare, the setting passes back and forth between duple and triple meter several times. Triple and duple rhythmic elements occur simultaneously and play off of one another. In the anthem’s middle section, the rhythmic energy of the opening is exchanged for a gentle extended crescendo as voices alternately sing their four-note, stepwise, rising lines over sustained organ chords. Then, the more energetic and somewhat metrically ambiguous elements of the previous section return. Finally, the text and music heard at the anthem’s opening recur in the manner of an antiphon. Duration: 3:20.

Published by Panagiotis Theodossiou (A0.886653). The Passage, for alto flute, viola and piano (2010) Introduction I.Ten Minutes II.I have something to tell you! III.Do you remember the river? The work is based on the three, one act, theatrical plays by Greek writer and doctor Harry Candiloros, published under the same name by Dodoni editions in 2010. The story is about the passage between this life and life after death. The 1st is about a cosmological end which never happens. The 2nd about the death of two friends under a collapsed building after an earthquake. The 3d about an afterlife dialogue between the persons of a family. Each of the three parts of the work is written respectively after the reading of the three parts of the book. First performance by Meteora Ensemble (Julia Barnett: alto flute, Kathryn Christensen:piano) with Andrea Hemmenway: viola as guest artist at Palisades Lutheran Church, Los Angeles, California in 2010. The work was transcribed for violin, baritone saxophone and piano in 2012.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdgtmkkiOg0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObO_CZZmI_c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBlN9FeyYHw

One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another theory says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. Seems like Stonyhurst College in Lancashire owns the oldest manuscript. It is from the year 1751. Lyrics Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841 wrote the English translation. This translation is probably the most common in the English-speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them. King John IV His subjects called King John IV of Portugal The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he composed and wrote as a music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the massive earthquake of Lisbon ruined the library in 1755. In addition to building his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Full Orchestra - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1019535 Composed by Peter Petrack. Contemporary. Score and parts. 167 pages. Distributed by The Wayfarer Partnership, LLC. #3516473. Published by Distributed by The Wayfarer Partnership, LLC. (A0.1019535). The Penitence of Time is an Orchestral tone poem based on the many ghost stories told about historic Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, especially those about Moravian College’s own music building, the 1748 Brethren’s House. It was used as a Revolutionary War hospital and meeting place for George Washington and his generals. Bethlehem may or may not be a haven for phantoms and specters, but it is certainly defined by the centuries of history that happened there. Listeners will hear orchestral bells striking midnight, as well as references to church chorales and Revolutionary War-era fife and drum. If you'd like to hear the full recording, feel free to visit Peter Petrack's Youtube channel.

Published by arrangements by GPoehlmann (A0.807234). THE CHURCH IN THE WILDWOOD (Little Brown Church in the Vale)This beautiful arrangement starts out slowly and simply to indicate the peace and beauty of the church (I visualize this as the physical beauty of the building and surrounding area as well as the peace of being in God's house). The music gains in intensity to symbolize the vitality of the the church's mission. The actual church was closed for years but experienced a revival (along with the hymn's popularity).119 measures. Advent,Christian,Religious,Sacred. Octavo. 1 pages. Leatherman Music Services #840637. Published by Leatherman Music Services (A0.1245807). This is the four-part hymn-style edition of this Eucharistic hymn, to facilitate congregational singing. As far as I am concerned, you may purchase the minimum amount of copies that SheetMusicPlus will allow, and then freely duplicate the song sheet for inclusion in worship bulletins. Other editions are available:A FESTIVAL CHOIR arrangement of this hymn is available here: https://www.arrangeme.com/title/436143A PIANO/ORGAN Duet of the hymn is available here: https://www.arrangeme.com/title/436144Here are some program notes: Johann Franck (1618-1677) was born in Guben, Germany, the son of a lawyer. Like his father, Johann studied law at the University of Konigsburg, where–in addition to his studies–he developed a warm friendship with a group of hymnists and poets. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. Many were published; some were not. During the 2020 slowdown caused by Covid-19, I finally had the time to start posting the unpublished resources on Sheet Music Plus.
