The song can also be found on the Intergalactic Sonic 7s hits collection.This arrangement is aimed at student keyboard ensembles with keyboardists or pianists at around grade 1 and grade 2 level. There are 4 parts, all written in treble clef; some octave transposition may be appropriate depending on keyboard model. A drum part is also included, this can either be pre-recorded or replaced by one of the standard keyboard styles. Runtime is about 3m30s.

The writer, a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), imagines a literal Christ baby in the woods who is at one moment frying with fire and at the next melting into a pool to wash the sins of the world (or assuage the guilt of the narrator). Only at this moment does the narrator realize that it is Christmas day and the reader is left to ponder their devotional obligation to the poor. Apart from being a monumental target for parody, the text demanded to be set to gothic Halloweeny music. Expect unrepentant stealing from Gesu bambino and a nod to Handel’s French overture style. (Feel free to double-dot this section if you so desire.) There is also an Afro-cuban montuno piano solo whilst the baby Jesus burns. Because of course there is.

In this arrangement for trombone quintet, the melody is predominantly in the first and 2nd parts, with the range on the first part up to b1 above the staff and the second trombone goes to a1 above the staff. This song is often performed without the verse, which precedes the chorus, but is included in this arrangement, set apart with a lighter texture and slower tempo. The stretching of pulse in the first measure can be omitted if the cohesiveness of the ensemble dictates. The familiar chorus should have a comfortable swing feel. The lyrics, by George Norton, Come to me my melancholy baby, Cuddle up and don't be blue, have probably been whispered between partners countless times. This infectious little tune has been recorded in a variety of tempos and styles, from sultry ballad to up tempo swing, by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Charlie Parker. Many have remarked on the big historical shift: musicians used to apprentice on the road with masters and learn the language firsthand, but those cultural conditions are fading, and the bandstand has been replaced by the graduate degree. There’s truth in that narrative, and yet it fails to account for the full variety of paths that players are taking as they strive to find their voice in this music.For alto saxophonist Christopher Burnett, the journey involved spending 22 years as a musician in the U.S. Army. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities. He left the service in 1996 - I’ve been out nearly as long as I was in, he says - and resettled in 2001 in his native Kansas City metropolitan area. Two years earlier, in 1999, he had released his debut recording, Time Flies, and in 2008 he followed up with Theme Music, both on the Artists Recording Collective (ARC) label that he cofounded with saxophonist Erica Lindsay and pianist Sumi Tonooka. Now at age 58, Burnett reaches another level of achievement with Firebird, showcasing a fine working quartet and a set of compositions rich in beauty, subtlety and sophistication. There’s a remarkable lyrical ease and harmonic savvy in the compositions that make up Firebird, not least of all on the title track with its layered flutes and Latin-tinged rhythmic feel. Burnett’s legato eloquence and depth of expression on the slow 4/4 Ballad for An Optimist is another highlight. His choice of the inspired, metrically shifting A Risk I Take, by French horn virtuoso and colleague Mark Taylor, tells us much about his refined taste and interpretive abilities.
