Orfeo has been permitted to bring his wife back from the underworld, provided he does not look at her during the return journey. He fails to meet this stipulation, turning to see her face, and so she dies. Grief-stricken, Orfeo asks what he will do without her. Some critics deem this music too light in character for a true lament, while others argue that its simplicity reflects a grief too deep for more complex expression.A charming addition to general repertoire, this piece rewards sensitive and expressive playing.

Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956662). This is an arrangement of Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), intended for a medium-sized woodwind group of perhaps 20 – 30 players. It has been categorised as ‘advanced’, as the length and tempo of the work make it quite challenging. However, provided the main parts are covered by competent players, those with less experience can either double, judiciously omitting any problem sections, or opt for the appropriate ‘easier’ add-on part.This is great fun to attempt, even if your ensemble may not manage it up to performance standard!The piece is scored for the following instrumentation: Essential Parts: Part 1: Flute Part 2: Flute Part 3: Oboe Part 4: Clarinet in B-flat Part 5: Clarinet in B-flat (contains essential divisi, so minimum of 2 players essential) Part 6: Clarinet in B-flat Part 7: Clarinet in B-flat OR Part 7: Alto Saxophone Part 8: Alto Saxophone Part 9: Alto Saxophone Part 10: Bassoon OR Part 10: Bass Clarinet in B-flat (low C instrument essential) Optional add-ons: Easier Flute/Oboe Low Clarinet in B-flat Easier Alto Saxophone Easier Tenor Saxophone Mini-Bassoon in F (an extra, NOT an easy, part) Easier Bassoon Mendelssohn visited Scotland in 1829 and, after a tour of the Highlands, travelled by steamer from Fort William to Oban and thence to the Hebridean island of Mull. From there, he made the short boat trip to the small island of Staffa, to visit Fingal’s Cave – a sea cave formed of hexagonal basalt columns, with a highly intriguing natural acoustic. The Hebrides overture was inspired by this segment of Mendelssohn’s Scottish travels. The work is an early example of a tone poem: a musical representation of the scenery, wind and weather of the Scottish Hebridean islands, reflecting their sudden and infinite changeability. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day. It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This arrangement was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.

March of the Hunters features in the opera Der Freischütz, which is possibly the best known work by the German Romantic composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786 – 1926). The story is based on an old folk tale and tells of a marksman who, desperate to win the hand of the lady he loves in a shooting contest, obtains some magic bullets which cannot fail to hit their target. One of these, however, is entirely under the control of the Devil…This arrangement is for semi-flexible mixed woodwind quartet of 2 flutes, oboe and either B-flat clarinet or bassoon. Well within the scope of intermediate-level players, it can be used as a recital piece, as part of a programme of light background music at a wedding or function, or just enjoyed as general repertoire.

Mairi’s Wedding (or the Lewis Bridal Song) is generally regarded as a Scottish folk tune, though it is accredited to J R Bannerman in 1934, who composed the song to celebrate Mary C McNiven winning the prestigious gold medal for singing at that year’s National Mod competition. The original song was in Gaelic – English words were added later, though these give the song a rather different character. In Scotland, the tune is used as a pipe band march and for Scottish country dancing. It can frequently be heard at some stage during a wedding celebration!

The Austrian Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was a prolific composer of light music, particularly dance tunes such as waltzes, polkas and quadrilles. His father (also Johann) was determined that his children should not follow him into the ‘music business’, so young Johann Jr studied the violin in secret. He was only able to follow his musical ambitions once his parents had separated and, even then, had to deal with opposition from his father. Because of the success of his compositions, Johann Strauss II is often given credit for the popularity of the waltz in 19th Century Vienna. He was known to his contemporaries as ‘The Waltz King’. This piece is taken from his Lockvogel Waltzer, Op. 118.

Originally written for large wind band, the work was commissioned to accompany an outdoor fireworks celebration held in London’s Green Park in April 1749, to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle the previous year. Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter. The pieces proved so popular that Dvorak composed a second set, Op. 72, in 1886. Op. 46, No. 3 is in the form of the polka, a dance which originated in Bohemia. This arrangement, for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon, is best suited to players of advanced intermediate standard or above.
