Tango for unaccompanied tuba is, to no one's surprise, a tango. Inspired by Jim Self's performance of Polka.com, I wanted to write a similar-but-"serious" piece in the style of a tango. This piece fleshes out several iconic and some stereotypical tango themes while still maintaining its own flow from start to finish. Feel the bass, hear the trumpets and violins, and even the percussion is there when you get in the groove - all in a small solo tuba packet.

Ever since the composer and pianist Peter Ludwig (*1951) heard Angel Villoldo's famous tango 'El Choclo' in the 1970s, this dance, the awareness of life evident in the tango, has fascinated him. And so he began to write tangos himself, bridging the gap between Latin American and European music cultures. Peter Ludwig presents three of his tangos in arrangements for clarinet and piano: 'Cäsar', dedicated to a dog, 'Firpo Tango', in memory of the ingenious Argentine tango musician Roberto Firpo, and 'Lisboa', a melancholy bow to the Portuguese metropolis – a rewarding and exciting addition to the clarinet repertoire.

Then the piece returns to the first section taking it to a conclusionJacaranda is scored for 6 C flutes and is in the key of D minor (concert) with the middle section in D major. The range is around two octaves for all players, and I have tried to keep all parts interesting with shared moments of melodic and rhythmic interest. It also has wide dynamic contrasts and heavy accents, along with legato and staccato phrasing, all of which are effectively used in this genre.It is set to Intermediate level- it is 4 mins 40 in length and would make a lovely addition to any programme.The youtube link has the full score so you can assess suitability. Mozart's work is famous for its rotating canon at the end. This tango goes one better: it is a tango fugue, and at the recap does a double fugue piling the tango theme and Mozart's on top of each other. The body of the track is a tango groove in the 'nuevo tango' style. The coda builds to a Mahler-evoking frightening climax, unwinding, and surprising to the nasty end. The middle section is a 'Gato', an Argentine folk-music which is, like much Latin American folk music, both in 6/8 and 3/4 simultaneously.'Tango 41' was originally composed as the first movement of 'Danzas Fantasticas', a 3-movement work for large orchestra and female voice.

The Trampoline Tango, for the summer season, is in 4/4 time, uses staccato, accents, and repeating 3rds. It remains in the C five finger position with the exception of adding a C scale at the end.
