Key Signature: G majorTime Signature: 3/4Tempo: Vivace, ma ritmico (vivace, considerably, 148bpm)Difficulty: IntermediateWilliam Alwyn (1905-1985) Fantasy Waltzes: No. 8 in G Major The Fantasy Waltzes is a suite of eleven piano pieces composed in London between June 1954 and April 1955 and is arguably one of Alwyn’s finest works for piano solo. Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

By this time in his career Satie was filling his scores with non-standard performance instructions, satiric barbs and modernist prose, scattered about on a carefully, expertly fashioned musical structure of experimental harmonies, strangely static rhythms, and radically miniaturized forms. In the case of Les Trois Valses Distinguées du Précieux Dégoûté, Maurice Ravel was undoubtedly the target of Satie’s satire. Ravel was the Précieux Dégoûté (a revolting or jaded dandy, a fop), and Satie’s Trois Valses subtly derided Ravel’s popular Valses nobles et sentimentales, composed four years earlier. Published by Paladino Editions (A0.1281512). Looking at David Popper’s Walzer-Suite, Op. 60, from the perspective of its surrounding opus numbers, it dates most probably from the late 1880s. As with so many others of his pieces, this suite was mainly written for his own performances. At the time of its composition Popper was still married to Sophie Menter and at the peak of his solo career. Besides the obvious similarities to the works of the Strauß dynasty, the musical language of Richard Strauss can already be found in Popper’s Waltz Suite. Like Josef Merk’s Valses Brillantes, Op. 6, the work is a series of waltzes framed by an introduction and a virtuoso finale which are linked by a mutual theme. This newly typeset edition provides two cello parts: one with Popper's original markings, and one with performance suggestions by Martin Rummel.

The keys have been transposed to more appropriately fit the range of the flute. This would be an outstanding choice for a high school flute ensemble to perform at contest or recital work, and would brighten up a university or professional recital.

The book comes in two versions, one for B flat saxophones and the other for E flat instruments. However, for obvious reasons you cannot mix B flat and E flat instruments in the same group. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for some beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522191). My Flute and Me consists of fourteen short and delightful pieces written especially for absolute beginners up to students at elementary level. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for many beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! The music is identical to that in the companion book My Recorder and Me. Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. However, the output quality will also depend on your own printer settings and capabilities. The publication consists of a teacher's book (18 pages) and a student's book (8 pages) both contained in the same pdf file. The composer, Colin Kirkpatrick studied at London’s Royal College of Music. After graduation, he followed a career in music education and composed music as an active sideline. His publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Belwin Mills and Intrada (Netherlands). His music has been performed and broadcast all over Europe as well as in Japan, Thailand, Australia and the USA. He was a High School Music Director for about fifteen years and then became a Music Education Adviser for local government, with the added responsibility for training teachers and overseeing the instrumental service. He has written articles for magazines in both the UK and the USA and holds MA (Hons) and PhD degrees.

Julius Schulhoff grew up as the son of wealthy Jewish parents in Prague, where he received piano and music theory lessons. Following his first performances in Dresden and Leipzig, he moved to Paris in the mid-1840s and was active there as a virtuoso pianist. Chopin is said to have shaken his hand after a performance, saying: ‘Vous êtes un vrai artiste, un collègue.’ (You are a true artist, a colleague.) Concert tours in England, Spain and Russia followed. However, over time, he gave up his career as a soloist and devoted himself entirely to teaching and composing, first in Paris, from 1870 in Dresden, later in Berlin, where he was appointed Professor a year before his death. His virtuoso salon music for piano includes a large sonata, studies, caprices, impromptus, nocturnes, waltzes and mazurkas. This short ‘album leaf’ was published by Schott in 1852 (plate number 12059).

This song has 14 chapters representing 12 waltzes mixed. The music sheet has 213 pages and can be electronically converted to a soundtrack playing for about 21 minutes. Some songs (chapters) were composed of ancient Chinese poems by famous poets like Liu Bang, Bai Juyi, Tao Yuan-ming, Su Dong-po, et al. A video with the same title has been posted on YouTube.com, which contains more than 130 images of photos and a few short videos with the background melody of this song. Although most of the songs were published before as early as 2008 and later, the author re-composed carefully based on his memory with certain modifications and key signature changes to adjust an even playing of the song in one whole piece. The highlights of the stories' songs are as follows: The beginning part of the song is originally called the prelude of Tao Yuan-ming's The Eutopia of the Peach Land Spring; which is followed by the historical long poem of 616 Chinese characters called Pi Pa Xing by Bai Ji-yi around 1:30. Around 8:06 is a small bird feeding her young chicken and its tail-dancing matches with the melody of the song which was modified from Beijing Opera by the composer. Around 11:30 is the song called Wedding Waltz for Su Dong-po's poem Written on the West Wood Wall; around 13:40 is the Chi Le Song; around 14:00 to 15:00 is the song - Love Forever, which was jointly created with his son Raymond and his wife Catherine 25 years ago. The playing time at 15:30 is the song the author wrote for his poem called Life and Sea in 100 Chinese Characters; around 18:00 to 19:00 is King's Wedding by the author. Mum's Waltz was written to celebrate my mother's 72nd birthday. As a teenager she had learned various Chopin Waltzes and Mazurkas and played them by memory all her life although she never followed a career in music. This waltz is in that tradition although easier to play and is intended for less experienced pianists.
