Programme note:'Carolina Fox Trot' was written by US composer and arranger Will H. Vodery and published as a piano piece in 1914, with a sub-title 'New One Step', and with a front cover description: New Society Dance - Originated by Billy Kent & Jeanette Warner - America's Classiest Dancers. String Ensemble,String Quintet - Level 5 - SKU: A0.928964 Composed by John Jacob Niles. Arranged by Donald A. Mills. Folk. Score and parts. 7 pages. Donald A Mills #3400179. Published by Donald A Mills (A0.928964). 2017 CHAMBER MUSIC CONTEST ENTRYI Wonder as I Wander is a Christian folk hymn, typically performed as a Christmas carol, written by American folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles. The hymn has its origins in a song fragment collected by Niles on July 16, 1933.While in the town of Murphy in Appalachian North Carolina, Niles attended a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. In his unpublished autobiography, he wrote of hearing the song:A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she too was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins.... But, best of all, she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song. The girl, named Annie Morgan, repeated the fragment seven times in exchange for a quarter per performance, and Niles left with three lines of verse, a garbled fragment of melodic material-and a magnificent idea. (In various accounts of this story, Niles hears between one and three lines of the song.) Based on this fragment, Niles composed the version of I Wonder as I Wander that is known today, extending the melody to four lines and the lyrics to three stanzas. His composition was completed on October 4, 1933. Niles first performed the song on December 19, 1933, at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. It was originally published in Songs of the Hill Folk in 1934.This arrangement of I Wonder As I Wander is a five-part string ensemble, revised 12.12.17. It was arranged specifically for the 2017 Chamber Music Contest on www.SheetMusicPlus.com. Used by permission.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.733625 Composed by Amy J. Snyder. Celtic,Concert,Folk,Holiday,World. Score. 7 pages. Amy J. Snyder #6320153. Published by Amy J. Snyder (A0.733625). Squall at Kilkee Bay is a lively, advanced intermediate piano solo, with a Celtic flavor. This arrangement has several keychanges, and helpful fingering. It's a great show-piece for recitals or just for fun. The title refers to an historic event, the shipwreck of the Edmond, in 1850 in Kilkee Bay, Ireland. The Edmond was battered by a fierce storm and pushed into the Bay, crashing against the rocks. A man by the name of Richard Russel was occupying a house on the bay. He was trying to secure his rattling bedroom window, when he spotted the distressed ship. He call the coastguard and then went down to the ship to try to help people to safety. He and 3 coastguards, James McCarthy, Timothy Hannigan, and Patrick Shannon rescued 100 passengers, men, women and children. Many others were not as fortunate. The 3 coastguards received silver medals for their heroic efforts. It's quite a story! High Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1027761 Composed by Alicia Willard. 20th Century,Blues,Contemporary. 34 pages. Alicia Santee-Davis #2923157. Published by Alicia Santee-Davis (A0.1027761). Periwinkle is a song cycle that was originally composed for mezzo-soprano and piano, but has been arranged for soprano and piano; it is a collection of character pieces using original poetry by Alicia Willard. High High Shoes is an upbeat, rhythmically active piece that illustrates the exhilaration and anxiety in reaching for one’s desires. Wings is a hauntingly slow array of uneasy dissonances, using only one line of text that is chopped into fragments and slowly arranged into a comprehensible statement. Boulders on Our Shoulders has a lilting jazz feel, including several piano solos that incorporate many aspects of the blues. Follow the Borrowers is much more introspective, with the music vividly conveying what the text colorfully provides in such lines as I’ll caress the tongue shapes. The title of the cycle is taken from a line of poetry in which the periwinkle dirt in the sky is introduced, providing one of many colors that are portrayed in the pieces. Periwinkle was written in 2009 and premiered at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts by Stephanie McAllister, mezzo-soprano, and the composer at the piano. After its recomposition, the soprano edition was premiered in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2016 by Amy Ingram, soprano, with the composer at the piano.

Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981222). What Would Nina Simone Say? For Soprano Sax and Organ (9'50)Program NotesI became interested in Nina Simone in the spring of 2018. She was born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, my own hometown. I knew little about her while I was growing up. Later I heard she was an activist and the sentiment around town I observed was that there was far from a feeling of pride about who Nina Simone was. If that really was the case (and I have no proof of it) there was a dramatic change with the creation of The Nina Simone Project in 2006. I was still ignorant of this, having lived in Arizona for most of my adult life. But researching Simone led me to an immense feeling of pride for my hometown when I read about the support she had from the white community in the 1940’s. Without that encouragement and financial support, as well as artistic support from a local piano teacher, Muriel Mazzanovich, Mrs. Mazzy, as she was called and who Nina treasured and respected all of her life, Nina Simone would never have reached the world with her unique prodigious musical talent. She was a diva by all counts and her original compositions reflect a balance of words with music that is far superior to what her contemporaries were creating. A bronze sculpture of her by Zenos Frudakis now stands on Main Street in Tryon. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? Simone asked in an interview. That to me is the definition of an artist. The feminist writer Germaine Greer declared Every generation has to discover Nina Simone. She is evidence that female genius is real. What would Nina Simone say today? I think she’d be mad as hell and screaming about revolution, probably still advocating for the use of violence. I’ve used some of Simone’s energetic and compelling motives in this composition. It is my own tribute to her genius and to how she gave to the world so much even though she was plagued with agonizing physical and mental ailments. That suffering seems to me an undercurrent in each video I have watched of her concerts. What I would give to have been in her presence for one of those concerts! She embodied music as an art form, revering her musical teachers, Bach, especially. That she never achieved her main goal of becoming the first female African-American classical pianist of world stature is perhaps not so sad when you think of how many more people she moved with her talent expressed in jazz and folk popular idioms. But she was prone to violence and many people, even those closest to her, were often fearful of her rage. She was misunderstood for so many years and it was only in the last two decades of her life that her moods were somewhat controlled through use of prescription drugs. The musical life that began for Eunice Waymon when she was seven years old playing the piano and organ for services at St. Luke’s C.M.E. Church (where her mother was the preacher) in Tryon, N.C. traversed many cities in many countries. She died at the age of 70 in 2003 in Carry-le-Rouet, France.
