Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533622). Giant Colored Bird II (2005) for two clarinets and bassoon was commissioned by NicholasBatko and is dedicated to him, Christina Johnson, and Eric Goldman. The title refers to a vivid mental image of a large, brilliantly colored bird in the wild: both flyingand unfurling its wings, while looking out over a beautiful landscape. Giant Colored Bird II isthus a joyous celebration of color and warmth. The opening section is lyrical as each instrument in turn takes a solo role. This section dissolvesinto short cadenza-like passages for each instrument. The second section is vibrant: a liltingmelody contrasts with driving figurations. The level of energy builds towards the conclusion.

Score and parts. 83 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3041105. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533710). I. Murky WatersII. The ForgottenIII. Casting InfinityEnchanted Tracings (Piano Concerto No. 2) (2008) for solo piano and wind ensemble was commissioned for a consortium of Donna Amato, piano, the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble, Denis Colwell, conductor; Keith Kirchoff, piano, the Harvard Wind Ensemble, Thomas G. Everett,Mark Olson, conductors; and Nora Skuta, piano, the Slovak Radio Symphony Winds, Kirk Trevor, conductor. These three marvelous piano soloists served as the inspiration for the work. The concerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.†Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeserved attention. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, and as a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonal constructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic idea behind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the first movement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirected formal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious. The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†the musical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and some disjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement. The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass. The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio. The spiky melodic material is treated in a variety of manners (including very tonally within the trio) before areturn of material from the first movement pushes the concerto towards its conclusion.InstrumentationPiccolo2 Flutes2 OboesEnglish Horn2 Clarinets in BbBass Clarinet in Bb2 BassoonsContrabassoon4 Horns in F3 Trumpets in C2 TrombonesTubaTimpaniPercussion (2 players)I: crotales, bass drum, tenor drumII: vibraphone (motor off), suspended cymbal(Percussion II needs one rosined bow.)Solo Piano(The above scoring is exact—with a single player on each part. Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533762 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 55 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3043953. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533762). Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations. The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn, this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. The theme serves asthe basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structuraltemplate for each. Also, each variation contains material referring backspecifically to the previous variation. The opening theme is declamatory and massive. The first variation is fastand limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The thirdvariation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifthvariation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowlyregains its declamatory nature before a brief and intense coda ends the workin a blaze. This item is the score and the solo part only. The orchestral parts are on rental from the publisher. The piano reduction is for sale as a seperate item.Instrumentation2 Flutes (2nd dbl. Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533667 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533667). Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic. The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo. The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section. This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section. The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments, emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl. Virelai II (2009) for solo violin is dedicated to violinist Chloé Trevor.Virelai (noun, Old French)1. an old French form of short poem, composed of short lines running on tworhymes and having two opening lines recurring at intervals.2. any of various similar or other forms of poem, as one consisting of stanzas madeup of longer and shorter lines, the lines of each kind rhyming together in eachstanza, and having the rhyme of the shorter lines of one stanza forming therhyme of the longer lines of the next stanza.3. a medieval song form providing a musical setting for a virelai but having a formalstructure different from that of the poem. This brief and rhapsodic work for violin uses the poetic form of the virelai as the basis of its musicalconstruction.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533554). I. (Flowing)II. (Fast, nimble)III. (Funereal) (in memoriam Donald Martino)IV. (Dancing)V. (Distant, echoing) (for Richard and Dee Wilson)VI. (Moderate, singing, with humor) (for Michael Finnissy)VII. (Slow, very lyrical)VIII. (March)IX. (Envoi: Very slow, from afar)Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned byRichard Mason.Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivicand developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work. The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work. The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine. The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend. The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano. The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures. The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux. The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away. The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows. The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. The movements should be listed in the program in the format shown at the top of this page.Recorded by Donna Amato on Carson Cooman: Piano works ALTARUS AIR-CD-9015

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.535388). I. SinfoniaII. To Mary on the vigil of her AssumptionIII. A Votive SongIV. The Heliotrope-the mind of man turned to GodAscensions (2009) for SATB chorus, traverso, baroque violin, viola da gamba, and organ was commissioned by and isdedicated to the Cornell University Chamber Singers, Holland J. Jancaitis, director. The work is a cantata consisting of an instrumental sinfonia followed by choral settings of three poems by neo-Latin poetJakob Balde, S.J. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religiousexpression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strongcorrelation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked inclassical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary andrelevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forwardmomentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs abouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song onthe acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. The finalmovement returns to the celebratory spirit of the opening; this time, instead of the Virgin’s journey, the poem describesthe speaker’s journey and compares a purposeful sea voyage to a directed life.Balde’s poems are provided in their original Latin and in two translations. One is a free translation in rhyming poeticEnglish created by James J. Mertz, S.J., longtime professor at Loyola University. The other is a newly-created literaltranslation by Edward J. Vodoklys, S.J., Senior Lecturer in Classics at the College of the Holy Cross.Carson P. Cooman, January 2009, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USAPERFORMANCE NOTES: The composer prefers a classically-informed Italianate pronunciation of the Latin(church Latin is acceptable). (It is important that V always be pronounced as V, not as the W soundoften used by classical Latinists.)The work is conceived for a chamber choir, as a larger choir would not balance the timbres of the baroqueinstruments. It is suggested that 16–24 singers be employed (no fewer than 12).As with much early repertoire, dynamic and expressive markings are kept to a minimum. It is expected thatdirector and performers will inflect lines expressively and naturally. The organ part is notated for a small portatiforgan with pull-down pedal (with no independent pedal stops). If played on a larger instrument, this smallerregistration plan should be kept in mind so as to create balance with the instruments and choir.

Cerulean: Double Percussion Concerto (2004) for two solo percussionists and ensemblewas commissioned by the Carnegie Mellon School of Music for percussionists Cory Cousins,Mike Perdue, and the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales, director. The work is dedicated to them and to Howard Stokar. The work is inspired by the ocean, particularly its greatest depths. The work is in two movements, played without break. The two movements explore the samemusical material (a specific collection of twelve pitches) in two very different ways. In thefirst movement, the material is presented often in row forms -- and harmonies derived from it.In the second movement, a more free approach is used to the material and it becomes moremotivic and gestural. The first movement, Different Purposes, is inspired by the vast diversity of deep-sea life.Musical objects interact with each other and ideas transform each other. Many of these deepseacreatures live in very isolated and solitary environments at the ocean's lowest points. They each exist and pursue their own purposes without any awareness of what else ishappening around them. However, despite this, they are all existing within a commonenvironmental system and are thus achieving goals together on a larger level. The second movement, Different Porpoises, is inspired by porpoises and other sea-creatureswho surface, thus providing a link to human land-bound life. The marimba establishes arhythmic ostinato which (although passed around) remains steady throughout most of themovement.InstrumentationFluteOboeClarinet in BbBass Clarinet in BbBassoonHorn in FPiano2 Solo Percussion:I: marimba, crotales, suspended cymbal, 2 spokes/bellsII: vibraphone (with motor), tubular bells, 3 bowls (indef. pitches),medium-size water gong (i.e., gong with bucket of water),3 roto-toms, conga, bass drum(each percussionist needs two bows)Violin IViolin IIViolaCello(All players except for the two solo percussion also playoracle rods in addition to their instruments.)The full score without the solo parts is also available for sale.. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533739). I. TributariesII. Memorial SongIII. Bridges to the SkyPittsburgh Rhapsody (2008) for brass band was commissioned by the River City BrassBand, Denis Colwell, music director, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of thecity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with support from the Pittsburgh 250 CommunityConnections Committee. The first movement, Tributaries, is inspired by Pittsburgh as a city of three rivers andparticularly the confluence of two rivers to form one. Throughout the movementthere are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening witha fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up againto a climax. The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium. The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiacmood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal andcorporate. The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. Themusic takes inspiration from the sense of exhilaration that one can get driving amidstthe post-industrial landscape of roads, flyovers, bridges, and hills.InstrumentationSoprano Cornet in Eb2 Solo Cornets in Bb2 1st Cornets in BbRepiano Cornet in Bb2 2nd Cornets in Bb2 3rd Cornets in BbFlugelhorn in Bb3 Horns in F(or 3 Alto Horns in Eb — alternate parts provided)2 Baritones in Bb2 TrombonesBass Trombone2 Euphoniums4 TubasPercussion (3 players)I: timpaniII: snare drum, bass drumIII: vibraphone, xylophoneThis is the score only. Score and parts. 76 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3041107. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533711). Enchanted Tracings (Piano Concerto No. 2) (2008) for solo piano and wind ensemble wascommissioned for a consortium of Donna Amato, piano, the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble,Denis Colwell, conductor; Keith Kirchoff, piano, the Harvard Wind Ensemble, Thomas G. Everett,Mark Olson, conductors; and Nora Skuta, piano, the Slovak Radio Symphony Winds, Kirk Trevor, conductor. These three marvelous piano soloists served as the inspiration for the work. Theconcerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.â€Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeservedattention. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, andas a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonalconstructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic ideabehind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the firstmovement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirectedformal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious. The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†themusical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and somedisjunct. The spikymelodic material is treated in a variety of manners (including very tonally within the trio) before areturn of material from the first movement pushes the concerto towards its conclusion.InstrumentationPiccolo2 Flutes2 OboesEnglish Horn2 Clarinets in BbBass Clarinet in Bb2 BassoonsContrabassoon4 Horns in F3 Trumpets in C2 TrombonesTubaTimpaniPercussion (2 players)I: crotales, bass drum, tenor drumII: vibraphone (motor off), suspended cymbal(Percussion II needs one rosined bow.)Solo Piano(The above scoring is exact—with a single player on each part. Hootenanny at the Gates of HeavenSonata in memoriam Daniel Pinkham (2007) for flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist FenwickSmith. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923-2006) – a composerwhose music, advocacy, and personal support meant a great deal to me over the years I knew him.Throughout his distinguished career as a composer, keyboard performer (on harpsichord and organ),teacher, and conductor, Dan Pinkham served as an inspiration for countless American composers andmusicians.I had planned to write a solo flute sonata for a few years and made many sketches towards such a work. Inearly 2007, reflecting on Dan’s passing in December 2006, I threw out everything I already had and begananew, conceiving the work both as a tribute to Dan and a piece for his close friend and frequentcollaborator Fenwick Smith. The five movements of the work each explore ongoing transformation of their opening materials. Thoughthere are elegiac moments in the work, the tone throughout is zestfully celebratory, with touches of humor, representing Pinkham’s irrepressible and memorable wit.The first movement, Caprice, flies through a series of arpeggio figurations in changing modes (often adifferent mode “going up†from “coming downâ€).The second movement, Folk Arabesques, is based on a Kentucky folk ballad, “John Riley.†The unusual leapsin the original melody and its modal shifts are explored in the surrounding commentaries, which takecombine bits of the folk ballad with arabesque figurations. The third movement, March, leaps through the total chromatic spectrum. Though the march is a form oftenignored by American composers, Pinkham often employed such sections and rhythms in his own music. The fourth movement, Aria and Interludes, uses a common Pinkham form—where the basic musicaldialogue (in this case a straightforward ‘aria’ melody in G minor) is interrupted by “interludes†ofcontrasting nature. In the case of this movement, it is gradually revealed that the interludes are alteredversions of the aria material. The fifth and final movement, Hootenanny at the Gates of Heaven, is a joyous romp, combining together boththe chromatic/modal shifts of the earlier movements with pentatonic figurations and melodies in the spiritof American folk fiddling.

Within the Embrace IV. Spring Rain V. The Vine VI.Vibrations Performance notes: These songs may be performed by any vocalists of any voice type or sex. They may also be performed in any transposition. However, all songs performed must be transposed in exactly the same manner. Though a performance of all six songs is highly preferred, smaller groupings or individual songs may be performed, particularly if the performance is not in concert. Throughout all songs, exceptional sensitivity, expressivity, and freedom is necessary to project a compelling performance. There should never be any sense of metronomic rigidity. The music serves to express and declaim the text, and this should be the driving force in shaping any interpretation.
