This collection of short compositions for brass quintet was conceived specifically to supplement a dearth of appropriate and artistic original compositions for the young aspiring brass quintet. These pieces are most fitting for a good high school quintet or a beginning college ensemble that wants a conquerable challenge. With a variety of keys, styles, and tempos, they lend themselves well for deep work on the core ensemble skills of rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dynamic balance. These brief works are also quite enjoyable for the professional quintet to perform for ever-popular school shows, or simply to read as a warmup with the focus of improving ensemble skills. Performance time for all five pieces is approximately five minutes.“Blackhawk” (duration 0:45) was originally composed in D-sharp minor as a melody to be used in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 39). The quintet version is in concert D minor for more manageable execution. This brisk four-four work is perhaps the most difficult in the collection, with demands of multiple tonguing for all the instruments as well as fairly advanced intervallic jumps. “Lamb of God” (duration 1:00) is one of many hymn tunes originally composed by Dr. Thrower for use in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 7: Ensemble Skills (p. 54), intended to be used to tune unisons and octaves. As a tuning study it was published in the key of F major for B-flat trumpet, or concert E-flat major. The quintet version retained the original key of concert E-flat. The reverently subdued four-four tempo makes this the easiest piece in the collection, technically, though the three core ensemble skills listed in the introductory paragraph (rhythm, intonation, and balance) must still be extensively addressed. The horn part is perhaps the most demanding in “Lamb of God,” with arpeggiated discant lines toward the end.“Summer Solstice” (duration 1:10) was started on June 21, 2023, which was the summer solstice. It is a bright, cheerful piece in concert F major with a lot of interest in all the parts. One source of the title’s inspiration came from my family’s new situation living in Tokyo, Japan, where the dawn sky brightens around 4:00 AM on the longest days of the year, which obviously coincide with the summer solstice. The 70-second piece was completed four days after conception while the long days started at their earliest.“Triumph: Children’s March” (duration 1:00) was the catalyst for this collection. It started as a cute little brass quintet piece in the key of concert B-flat major, to be performed for children, such as for school concerts. The cut-time tempo is very brisk for a march, but animated little legs (or a more manageable audience activity of clapping hands) can easily handle the task. Although the first trumpet part ends up on a high C, there is an alternate note for a more comfortable ending.“Waltzing Puma” (duration 0:30) is an evocative title for an evocative piece. Like “Blackhawk,” this melody was composed as a melody for Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 36). The melodies in that series took on titles of military aircraft, and this one was the helicopter “Puma.” Since this tune is in a fast three-four, it became the “Waltzing Puma.” The quintet version retains the original key of concert F minor.

The First Noel arranged for Viola & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Viola Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. The text for Not but a Seed…, which was written by the composer, follows the growth of tree from a single seed, through its existence as a full-grown member of the forest around it. In the mind of the author/composer, this growth exists as a metaphor for two of the most important elements of life, family and the process of artistic creation. In each, the tiniest of particles is created from elements that it is initially unaware of. Over time, these tiny elements grow to become able to foster creation of their own, ultimately connecting into a single unending web. Musically, this concept is dealt with during the course of the piece, where the opening chord is used as a catalyst for melodic and harmonic expansion throughout. This sonority is also used at important goal points throughout the setting of the three–stanza text. The piece is set for SATB choir, with each section occasionally splitting by half. The work includes rich harmonies throughout, as well as melodic moments for each voice part to shine through. The clear linear progress of each voice, combined with the recurring sonorities mentioned above make this piece a rewarding and accessible musical undertaking. A rehearsal piano reduction is included in the vocal score.

This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) Published by Tyler Merideth (A0.782530). Agnus Dei is the tenth movement from a larger work entitled Reconciliation, a set of 12 Latin prayers. Each movement takes it's inspiration from individual postcards containing pictures of St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry, England. When performed in sequence, Reconciliation can serve as a worship service however, the individual movements also can stand alone. Although the tenth movement in Reconciliation, Agnus Dei was the initial small seed catalyst that grew into the idea to write a 12 movement work. The idea came to me when I first visited Coventry Cathedral and saw a statue entitled Reconciliation by Josefina de Vasconcellos. The statue depicts two figures kneeling in an embrace. What makes this statue so powerful is that the placement of the statue is among the ruins of the original Cathedral after the bombing by German Aircraft in WWII. I immediately sketched an idea for this movement on the bus after my college choir rehearsed in the cathedral. When I returned to the United States, I wrote a rough vocal line and string orchestra accompaniment. The composition then lay dormant for more than a decade with no major changes. It was only this past week (almost fifteen years later) that I rewrote the accompaniment for piano and cleaned up the choral part. The opening unison vocal line can be timeshared among the voice parts. Since it covers a wide range, let the lower voices sing what range they sing well and the higher voices reciprocate. Please feel free to vary the tempo with rubato throughout the piece to allow for proper breath support. Do not be shy leaning into the dissonances found in the suspensions as the ultimate resolution in the grant us peace

Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548502). The First Noel arranged for Trumpet in Bb & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Trumpet Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era.
