Cavatina is a 1970 classical guitar piece by British composer Stanley Myers based on music originally written for the soundtrack of the film 'The Walking Stick'(1970). After Myers expanded the piece and it was recorded by guitarist John Williams, Cavatina was popularized as the theme from the 1978 film 'The Deer Hunter'. In 1973, Cleo Laine wrote lyrics to Cavatina and recorded her version under the title He Was Beautiful. After the release of 'The Deer Hunter' in 1978, Williams' instrumental version became a UK Top 20 hit in 1979. This new arrangement is based on a choral version created by Roderick Williams. Perfect for a concert of film music or for a quiet interlude at any time of year.

Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by one tone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only for two intermediate players.A separate one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line and an arpeggio accompaniment, set in both score and score+tab. In each of the four movements, Beethoven succeeds in re-inventing the archetypal movement forms with equal intensity, meaning that they are consequently nothing like what they once were. My Beethoven Studies (String Quartets 6-10) explore the cosmos of this so very unique quartet to a greater or lesser degree, and in explicit form in this concluding quartet of the cycle. The Cavatina from op. 130 is one of the most emotional movements ever written by Beethoven. Although some of the original material can be recognised in my own Cavatina, I consider it as one of the most personal and freest movements of my entire quartet cycle. This is a free form of ardent singing and flowing, marking the conclusion of the cycle which grappled so vehemently and sensuously with the cosmos of Beethoven’s quartets. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The work is in the form of a Cavatina and Cabaletta, a vocal aria form used in Bel Canto operas during the life of Demersseman. In this form, a slow, expressive and ornamented melody (the cavatina), usually with solo cadenzas is followed by a faster, usually more dramatic but equally florid section (the cabaletta). Famous examples of this form include the aria Una voce poco fa in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Casta diva ... Ah! bello a me ritorno in Bellini‘s, Norma. It is important to listen to vocal performances in this style, especially in performing the solo cadenzas, which (in spite of the notation) are not necessarily meant to be performed as virtuoso effects., but rather as a means of displaying expression and beautiful tone. An excelent concert item or encore lasting about 4 mins, and an interesting addition to own choice examination pieces. The piano accompaniment and parts for Bb and A Clarinet are included.
