Instrumental Duet Flute,Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - SKU: A0.809918 Composed by Charles Gounod and J.S. Bach. Arranged by Robert E. Proctor. Baroque,Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 9 pages. R. E. Proctor #6188521. Published by R. E. Proctor (A0.809918). Charles Gounod’s Ave Maria is one of the most moving melodies. Coupling it with J. S. Bach’s Prelude in C Major, a charming work for keyboard, makes for a delightful experience for the performer and listener alike. In this arrangement, the guitar and flute, two instruments that are ideally suited for each other, weave a magical spell of melody and harmony. Ideal for both secular and religious performances. Approximate duration: 2.22. Suggested fingerings for the guitar are included.

E-Flat Clarinet,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.550918 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Easter,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888287. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550918). This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.550917 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888281. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550917). Composed by J. S. Bach - C. Gounod. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. General Worship, Easter, Wedding, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Funeral. Score, Solo Part. 6 pages. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications
This ever-popular piece is often performed at weddings, funerals and many other solemn
ceremonial events. It has always been a favorite among instrumental players and often used in
recitals or concert encores. In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his
own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the
Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier,
published in 1722. The title of the ?combined? piece was Mditation sur le Premier Prlude de
Piano de S. Bach. Gounod?s original arrangement transposed Bach?s keyboard part from C major
into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French
music publishing company Jacques-Lopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the
familiar Latin text. Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a traditional Catholic prayer addressed to the
Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The version of Bach's prelude which Gounod used included the so-called "Schwencke measure" (m.
27 in this arrangement), a measure (bar) allegedly added by the German composer and pianist
Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke (1767-1822) in an attempt to correct what was considered
a harmonic weakness in the original. Whether there actually was a ?harmonic weakness? (or
possibly an error in the manuscript) remains a matter of conjecture but the fact remains that
the most familiar-sounding version of this piece, recorded countless times by both singers and
instrumentalists includes this Schwencke measure. It is therefore included in this arrangement.
Some published arrangements show minor inconsistencies in the rhythm of the melody. This
arrangement uses the familiar rhythm of the Ave Maria version as it appeared in the 1859
edition.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1487496 Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Arranged by Robert Stevens. 19th Century,Chamber,Christmas,Classical,Religious. Score and part. 20 pages. SAXpress.com #1064450. Published by SAXpress.com (A0.1487496). Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) (1853) Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) Any Saxophone Solo and Piano Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) by Charles Gounod (after J. S. Bach) (based on music of J. S. Bach) arranged for Any Saxophone Solo and Piano. B-flat and E-flat solo sax parts are included. This arrangment is in the key of C major, as was the 1853 original version. Tempo is around 78 bpm. The solo part is an exercise in expressive legato playing. Some rubato may be added in the last few bars of the music. The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria is a popular and much-recorded setting of the Latin prayer Ave Maria. It was first published in 1853 as “Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach“. Gounod improvised an original melody that he paired with a slightly changed version of a familiar Bach Prelude (Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier). The 1853 publication is an instrumental piece. There was no text. Gounod reworked the piece in 1859, finally settling on the Latin prayer “Ave Maria” as lyrics. The new version proved to be an irresistible force. It attracted a phenomenal level of acclaim, becoming immensely popular, even improving Gounod’s faltering reputation with the contemporary public. It is a standard at holiday times, weddings, quinceañeras, church services, and other solemn occasions.

Score and parts. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #6265157. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552194). SchwenckeThere are two popular versions of the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria. Firstly, we have the version that faithfully follows the harmonic scheme set forth by J. S. Bach in his Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Secondly, we have the arrangement introduced by the Choirmaster Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke in 1783 that introduces a controversial added measure designed to intensify the harmony in measure 23. Both versions employ the melody that Charles Gounod provided as an overlay to the Bach harmony. In either case, the convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide options for extended performance. The duration with the repeat runs about 4:50. The score is 7 pages long. This version features the Schwencke measure. Ave MariaAve Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.Bach OverviewJohann Sebastian Bach was prolific. Bach HistoryBach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Bach StyleIt seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.Bach Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century.

Guitar - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1313929 By Ron k Wiggins. By J.S. Bach and Charles Gounod. Arranged by Ron k Wiggins. Christian,Classical,Wedding. Guitar Tab. 2 pages. WigMusic #902507. Published by WigMusic (A0.1313929). J.S. Bach (1685-1750) wrote a series of 24 compositions, one for each major and minor key, and he called it “The Well Tempered Clavier,†which was a keyboard type instrument. The “Prelude in C†has been transcribed by a number of people for classical guitar.  It is basically a beautiful chord progression with a picking pattern.  About 110 years later the French composer, Charles Gounod, added a melody to it and called it “Ave Maria.†It became known as the “Bach-Gounod Ave Maria,†and you can often hear it played as a duet for flute and piano. Tarrega actually transcribed it for classical guitar in the late 1800s but you would need virtuoso skills to play it. As playability is always a priority in my arrangements I made some compromises.I kept the melody and chord progression and, to the extent I could, the bass notes.  But the voicing, those notes between the bass and melody that were real important to Bach, I just let fall where they may and used common guitar chord forms. The end result Is beautiful, recognizable, and quite playable.
