Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810972). Albert Robert Mueller (Müller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. • Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. • Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. • Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. Reinhold Gliere's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, Op. 82 was written in 1942-1943 and shows off the composer's gentle melodic musical style reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and even Wagner. The choice of a vocal soloist singing without words was not new at that time, as Rachmaninov's beautiful Vocalise had already been composed. But....adding a full orchestra to the mix was a gamble that paid off, as this is one of Gliere's finest works. The Concerto consists of two movements -- Andante and Allegro and is about 14 minutes in length. The 1st movement's rich melodies are full of lush harmonic textures and the work drives from climax to climax. The finale Allegro is lighthearted and bounces along merrily to the end. Gordon Cherry's arrangement for Alto Trombone with Piano accompaniment reduction brings a major new work to the Alto Trombone repertoire. This work can also be performed on the Tenor Trombone, however, the style of the work makes it perfect for the Alto Trombone. Appropriate for advanced performers. (Under license from G. Robert Schumann's Konzertstück (Concert Piece), Opus 86 originally for Four Horns is a work of incredible genius, in that it combines virtuosity, energy, expression, lyricism and harmonic invention. It is now available in a newly arranged edition for Four Trombones and Piano, by Gordon Cherry. Written during Schumann's most prolific period in 1849, it is a marvelous showpiece for Trombone quartet & Piano and unsurpassed for its sheer excitement. Each performer needs to be at the top of their game, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The 3-movement work of almost 20 minutes in length is a joy to perform and to listen to. Recommended for advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792139). The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792269). The Clarke Method for Trombone has some uncommon features not found in other method books. 1. First, is the use of the key of C for the initial 33 exercises. The author then progresses through all of the keys, alternating the sharp (first) and flat keys through to six sharps and six flats by the end of exercise 155. 2. Secondly, there are no exercises devoted solely to minor keys. However, Clarke employs the minor mode in all of his exercises through the use of scales and arpeggios, so in fact the performer is receiving a steady diet of minor melody built in for him/her. 3. Thirdly, Clarke uses no metronome markings. He explains; each exercise should be practiced carefully over and over again until every difficulty is thoroughly overcome – until the exercise can be played through correctly – before going on to the next. His purpose is to avoid speeding through them. Clarke’s exercises are progressive throughout the keys, however each one starts out easily in order to keep the student focused on the new key and the new progression notes that come with it. For the advanced performer, this book is great to use as a way to ease back into shape after a rest from the instrument, allowing the performer to relearn the instrument carefully and methodically. I use it also for tone building, phrasing, and breath control. Throughout the book, Clarke reminds the performer to always produce a noble sound, stressing natural playing (without forcing) and relaxation. His phrase, the breath is the life of the tone, is a phrase that Remington used throughout his great teaching career as well. Clarke talks about tonguing, saying that, the tongue is used merely as an aid in articulating – not as a necessity... the tone does not depend on the tongue... the tongue should not be made too important...

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810934). One of the most famous movements from The Messiah, features the Bb Trumpet and Tuba, Trombone or Euphonium on the solo parts. The bass part goes up to a high C above the staff several times, so the tuba must have a good high register. The trombone and tuba solo parts can be switched and the trombonist from the quintet can play the solo bass part on tenor trombone, bass trombone or Euphoniums. The tuba can then move to the trombone part, which is a low part anyway. This work is in the key of Bb, down a 3rd from the original and very playable. This transcription comes in two keys; the original in D (high) or in Bb (lower). In the lower key it can be played on Bb trumpet and is much easier on the solo bass part if played by the tubist. If played in the original key, an optional organ part can be added to the quintet for a very symphonic effect. This work is a must on a Brass Quintet Christmas or Easter Concert.
