The alternate version is also a swing -- same tune with different harmonization. The March 2020 Covid-19 influenza scare is the subject of Wait It Out. The lyrics express an individual’s efforts to cope with being isolated, away from friends – social distancing to discourage the spread of the flu. I wrote this tune in the Locrian mode, which conveys a sad, surreal mood associated with self-isolation. The coda brightens the mood with a change to Ionian (major) mode.Here are the lyrics:Wait It Out1. I’m not having fun home alone. I’m chewing my nails to the bone. I don’t pretend to comprehend. Just as Mr. Lu has said: No matter whether you climb to the top of the mountain or not, we are all embraced by it. It is true that we admire it not only for its great majesty and steep scenery, but, more importantly, for the spiritual meaning behind it, from which we learn humility. When visiting the mountain, the composer was moved to be lost and speechless, and soon reminded of the poem by the poet Kuei-Shien Lee, The Invisible Temple, as follows: I stand high, having no fear of seeing very far. It is blurry far away from here, and nothing can’t be seen. I insist on coldness, silencing the world in my inner rock strata. I am independent of the uproarious world of mortals. Those who are frantic come here, the invisible temple. Still frantic, they return to the world, without appreciating anything. With Lee’s consent, the title of the poem was applied to this work, to represent the composer’s feelings of visiting the Yu-shan Mountain. In this work, several songs from the aboriginal Tsou and Bunun tribes are adopted for the large male chorus and orchestra. It comprises three parts: 1. The talk in the night staying at the Inn Paiyun, 2. The Sunrise, and 3. The Worship, which are to be performed attacca (without pause or interruption). P.S. 1. The work was commissioned by Chew’s Culture Foundation, and was composed in 2005-2006. In December 2007, it was premiered by Chun-Chiang Chiu conducting the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus at the Kaohsiung City Cultural Center and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, respectively. 2. Even he finally decided devoted to music composing for his life, he always had the passion for painting. Several Professor Ma’s compositions were highly inspired from the concepts and techniques of painting. Professor Ma believed that all the arts, although they present differently on the usages of materials or techniques, the essence and highest acheivement of all arts must be the same, including both music and painting. Meditation on Paintings in Ink was directly inspired by the techniques of Chinese traditional ink painting and the concept of the mutuality in virtuality and reality. The composer attempted to transform the philosophy that derive from the virtuality-reality relationship into the composition, presented it as the contrast between time and space, the alternation of texture and density, or, the changing of emptiness and fullness, etc., in order to establish an artistic atmosphere of musical painting. Meditation on Paintings in Ink was commissioned by the Council for Cultural Affairs, premiered in the National Concert Hall, on 25th of November 1995. It was programed in the Euterpe: Spring and Autumn concert series Autumn 1995: A Night of Chamber Music, held by the Chew’s Culture Foundation. The world premiere was conducted by Hwei-Ming Twu and the nine cellists were Wan-Ling Sun, Jyh-Ing Huang, Pei-Ling Cheng (Yi-Chin Cheng) , Shih-Fei Tseng, Wan-Rong Hung, Yun-Yu Huang, Chu-Chuan Liu, Monica C.F. Su and Pei-Yu Wang.

The composer has been living in northern Kuando for years, facing the Kuando Plain, where he was inspired by the first ray of the morning sun, the sunset glow, the misty fog in the morning, and the brightly lit night scenes. The inspiration, coming in dribs and drabs, in a haphazardly contemplative way, resulted in this attacca piece. The work was originally titled Kuando Fantasia, and renamed as Capriccio of Kuando later. ※This composition was commissioned by Chew’s Culture Foundation in 2000, and the symphony orchestra of National Taipei University of the Arts gave its world premiere at the National Concert Hall in Taipei in 2001, with the pianist Wang Mei-Ling and conductor Hsu Sung-Jen.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.

Campbell suggested that An-lun combine the folk music of Canada and China in this new work. The result was the septet,†Seven Canadian Folk Songs in Chinese style, became the most exciting hit piece of the tour. The world premiere was taken place at the Festival of the Sound at Parry Sound, Ontario, before the China tour. It was performed by seven leading Canadian musicians, Moshe Hammer(violin), Steven Dann(viola), Sophie Rolland(cello), Joel Quarrington(bass), Anton Kuerti(piano), Robert Aitken(flute) and James Campbell(clarinet). The piece was so warmly received both in Canada and China that a record has been released. It was also the most successful piece for the Canada-Hong Kong Festival, Hong Kong, 91. In addition, in 2002, successfully, the Canadian Symphoniatta performed its orchestral version, conducted by Tak-ng Lai, in Paris, France. However, Huang found the musical similarity of the two nations--the pentatonic mode. Written in Chinese idea, the septet gives the opportunity both to the Chinese and Canadian audiences to find themselves in each other through the Seven Canadian folk songs. The septet is divided into seven attacca parts. No.1 begins the music into a very quiet British Columbia Indian folk tune, performed by flute and clarinet, and occasionally, the piano gives few chords to support them. No.2 comes a Alberta Indian lyric song with all instruments. The folk songs of No.3 and 4 are Ontario Forest man’s old tunes which bring the music to the exciting part. The No.5 is a Saskatchewan Indian traditional tune, the war song. Its heavy dynamic shows the typical native Canadian rhythmic patterns. Wooden spoon is a Canadian folk instrument. The clarinet player plays it in No.6 of a vivacious Quebec folk dance. And in a Newfoundland lyric song, No.7, the septet goes to its brilliant ending. The first tells how Heracles (Hercules) fought and killed the nine-headed monstrous predatory snake. The second relates the story of Corvus (the crow) who was commanded to bring water to Apollo, but was distracted, and blamed the water snake for his being late in returning to Apollo with the cup (Crater). In honour of Hydra’s extensive span across the sky, all 88 keys are used. Thus much of the material is chromatic (and also palindromic) but in bars 9, 19 and 29, you can see the approximate shape of the constellation if you join the dots of the noteheads. I have chosen to eschew the use of 8va and 8vb signs, instead opting to show the expanse of all the notes on the keyboard as they appear on the staff. It is easy to play these high and low leger line notes, knowing that they always begin (or end) at the top or bottom of the piano keyboard (i.e. the highest C and the lowest A).
