A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by tenor, then baritone sax, before returning to the opening section on Alto.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his personal pianist. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British society.Duration - 4 minutes.

The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. Émile Waldteufel wrote over 200 works, but this is the piece he is best remembered for.Skater's Boogie is arranged as performed by famous t.v. pianist Jo Ann Castle. This piano solo arrangement features all of the excitement and energy of Jo Ann's television performance on the Lawrence Welk Show.Jo Ann Castle is an American honky-tonk pianist, best remembered for appearing on The Lawrence Welk Show. She adopted her stage name from the name of an accordion manufacturer, another instrument she played proficiently. She was often referred to as Queen of the Honky-Tonk Piano by Lawrence Welk himself. Originally introduced to Welk by Joe Feeney in 1959, Castle became a permanent member of the Welk Family, replacing the departing Big Tiny Little.  In the 1990s, Castle performed at the Welk-owned Champagne Theater in Branson, Missouri, as well as making a guest appearance for a show with Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra on RFD TV.

I have in certain sections omitted the relentless oom pah pah of the waltz., which can sound quite heavy on wind instruments. I have attempted to give all the players places to breath, and have not transcribed it for tutti all the way through. Look no further than the Snowdrift Galop written by British composer, Charles Coote Jnr. It starts off just like Jingle Bells - and the Jingle Bells theme keeps coming back, but is it actually Jingle Bells? It also has a march-like theme and a lovely Trio section. All players get to play important melodic material in this arrangement.Snowdrift Galop was published in London in 1868 in a small collection of works by various composers. The opening theme is immediately recognisable as the popular holiday favourite, Jingle Bells, which was published 11 years earlier, yet the composer gives no reference or credit to the earlier work. Although the opening theme is the same as Jingle Bells, we get a stately march instead of the familiar Jingle Bells chorus. A lovely Trio introduces another new tune which is played by clarinet 3, then bass clarinet before returning to the opening section.Charles Coote Jnr (1831-1916) was a prolific English composer of popular music, including quadrilles, waltzes and galops. His music was written for society balls and subsequently published for piano, so that others could play them at local dances or in their ownhomes. He was the son of composer and bandmaster, Charles Coote (1809-1880). Coote Snr worked for the 6th Duke of Devonshire for 30 years, conducted his private orchestra, and was referred to by the Duke as his ‘personal pianist’. Growing up in this environment would have ensured that Coote Jnr was well connected with British ‘society’.Duration - 4 minutes.
