They started, 'Chestnuts roasting..., Jack Frost nipping..., Yuletide carols..., Folks dressed up like Eskimos.' Bob didn't think he was writing a song lyric. He said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Forty minutes later that song was written. I wrote all the music and some of the lyrics. It also serves as a sketch that is loosely based on some aspect about the subject: 1. The classical-style Katies kleine Sonatine is a pun on Katie Cline and Eine kleine Nachtmusik; 2. Garrett is a proudly unusual character and his piece is vaguely atonal at times; 3. Jennie is a generous and deep soul, in a way that reminded me of Beethoven’s Andante cantabile from the Pathétique sonata; 4. Barbara’s second commission was an occasion for me to explore a Chopinesque etude style and unlikely harmonies; 5. Jamie is boisterous, fiercely devoted, strong-minded, and plays ukulele.
