These two alternative notation duets are geared towards making a duo communicate, listen, flex their creativity, focus on sounds, and make artistic choices. You can read more below from the performance notes for the series but the highlights include: Choice of open instrumentation, choice of paper orientation, choice of rotation (clockwise or counter-clockwise), and choice of speed. More info below!The outside of the wheel connects to the events which are to be played upon an instrument capable of producing the written chords, while the inside wheel connects to the events which are to be played upon an instrument capable of the range and 3 timbres (open, muted, and either a harmonic of a multiphonic)***. This piece is meant to begin at whichever musical event the performers agree upon and rotate in a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion which is also determined and agreed upon by the performers. The orientation of the page is also left to the players discretion but must be agreed upon. When the lines connecting the musical events to the wheel are staggered around the wheel then each musical event must be played in full before the other performer starts his or her next event. When the lines are directly across from one and other the events are to be played simultaneously. The musical events must stay in the order in which they occur around the wheel. When two lines connect a single musical event to the wheel, that event is to be vamped(repeated) until the completion of the other player's event which occurs within that time. The moments of locking in time(both performers playing the selected notes in time with one another) are indicated by parentheses around one or more notes in two simultaneous events***. Octans marks the location of the southern celestial pole. It is circumpolar to the south pole, moving clockwise and contains the southern pole star Sigma Octantis. Compared to its northern counterpart, Ursa Minor, I have taken a similar approach, but move around the circle of fifths in a clockwise direction, use C to represent the pole star in the right hand, and allow the left hand to play the melody as it moves through the keys. “Southpaw†is slang for a left-handed person, and the left hand does most of the playing in this Intermediate Piano Solo. Octans is a navigational instrument, and this constellation is one that Nicolas Louis de Lacaille named. From “88 Constellations†a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano). Oxen of the Sun, composed for the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin and Irish horn player Cormac Ó hAodáin in 2017, is a true celebration of the miracle of childbirth.Quoting a fragment of text from Chapter 14 of James Joyce’s Ulysses, composer Eoghan Desmond portrays childbirth as a divine mystery. The greeting fanfare of a solo horn in tandem with the choir depicts a mystical incantation by doctors in Dublin’s Holles Street Maternity Hospital – ‘Deshil Holles Eamus/clockwise we go’, in other words, ‘while we wait for the mother to give birth, we will proceed in a clockwise manner’. I wanted the harmonic language to represent that feeling of openness, so I used a fifths language giving it that open feeling. I treated the circle of fifths almost like a tone row, drawing my harmonies and chords from sections of the circle and creating a melody directly from the reading the circle either clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.YouTube Link https://youtu.be/xb4E0I-vJek.

Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.YouTube Link https://youtu.be/xb4E0I-vJek.
