She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to life’s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.

Ondine Press #5377025. Published by Ondine Press (A0.866120). This is a piano reduction to Yoon Jae Lee’s arrangement, Variations on “Non più mesta†for flute and orchestra. The full score and set of parts are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music. Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. So, instead of a serenade for ten instruments, my work for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, is called La Serenissima as an homage to Antonio Vivaldi and that glorious city of Venice. The Gondoliers premiered in December 1889 and ran for 554 performances. To be a Regular Royal Queen is part of the finale to Act 1. Two of the principal gondoliers and two of the contadine sing of what they perceive as the perks of being royalty – such as rich clothing, valuable possessions and being universally admired and respected.The piece makes a joyful, appealing arrangement for the four-part mixed woodwind combination of 2 flutes, oboe and either clarinet in B-flat or bassoon. It has been classed as 'intermediate' as, although it appears quite challenging, various adult learner groups have managed it surprisingly successfully. Instrumentation: 2(Il. ad lib) 2. 2. 2 – 2. 2. 1(ad lib). 0 – str This is a full score to Yoon Jae Lee’s arrangement, Variations on “Non più mesta†for flute and orchestra. The set of parts, as well as a version for flute and piano, are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. It was written down in 1988 when I was 19, but had been with me in my head since I was about 8. Back then I had no idea how to write down full orchestral music, but after all my teenage years spent feeding off the Great Masters and studying their brilliant orchestrations in scores, I finally made an attempt at notating this florid little piece when I was at college (London College of Music) in 1988. Not wishing to waste it, I have now revised it and finally prepared its score and parts for performance.InstrumentationPiccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bflat clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 French horns in F, 2 Bflat Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Bass trombone, Glock, 2 harps, celesta, large string section to accommodate divisi into 3 for all except the basses.Duration – 3 minutes approx.All the parts are fairly straightforward, except the harps and celesta, which I believe to be of some challenge.If it was to find a place in a concert programme, I believe it would be a lovely encore – a really loving way to send your audience home from a great night out. ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTS1992 – The Mini Concerto For Alex, for solo cello (about grade 6 or 7) and school orchestra was commissioned in 1992 by Ibstock Place School for a talented young cellist, Alex Hunt, who was a student at the school at the time.  The Head of the school’s music department was Chris Artley, who was a marvelous support to me, throwing my way many wonderful opportunities or orchestrate for the Ibstock Place orchestra. The Mini Concerto For Alex is just one example.
