Ian McDougall has written a stellar new major work entitled Concertino for Trombone with Piano accompaniment, Devil or Angel?. The composition is in three movements: I Cherub vs Imp II Guardian III Old Nick This new work was commissioned by his former student, Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombonist of the Toronto Symphony. The Concertino is one of the featured works on Wolfe's beautiful new recording, REFLECTIONS. Here is what the composer says about his own work: The 'tritone' has been referred to as a dissonance for centuries, and has been called 'the devil in music'. This interval can be quite difficult to sing in tune, and can often grate on the ears, yet it can also have a great dramatic effect. It is tuly a 'devilish' little beast, and it is what inspired me. The devil's antagonist is surely an angel. So, imagine one's guardian angel on one shoulder, and 'Old Nick' on the other, battling for your conscience, and you will essentially have what this three movement piece is all about. Concertino is for very advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length.

Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone.
Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family.
Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Alto Trombone and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

This solo feature for a quintet's trumpeter or cornetist is from the Golden Age of concert bands at the turn of the 20th century composed by legendary Sousa Band soloist Hebert L. Clarke. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792631). The Concertino No. 2 in B Flat was recently discovered while surfing the internet. The version found stated that it was a concertino for viola and piano. However the piano reduction had the solo part written for bassoon. It was followed by a separate solo part for viola. However upon examination this proved to be and orchestral viola part and not a solo part at all. From this one could conclude that there must have been, and perhaps still exists, a score and parts for a full orchestral accompaniment. Although not originally for trombone, this piece lends itself admirably to the lyrical and heroic nature of the trombone. It is challenging but well-suited to the instrument and a quality piece of music. The editor hopes that this piece will find its place as a mainstay in the literature for trombone.

At six minutes in duration, all the elements of a major work are still apparent. Like the David Concertino, it uses similar military-style opening and closing themes with a lyrical middle section. The Solo and Trombone Quartet accompaniment are of medium difficulty and appropriate for recitals and similar performances.
