Duration 4 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q2721. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2721). Old English. The first known canon of European art music, now in the British Museum in London, is preserved in a thirteenth-century manusript from the English abbey in Reading: This is the so-called summer canon, whose verses greet the advent of summer. An accompanying note elucidates the artistic layer-like construction of the sound structure: a two-voice foundation of bell-like, swinging pendulum tones supports an upper structure of four voices which enter at equal time intervals. The note terms the canon rota - round -, which makes reference to the turning, circling movement of the constantly pulsating sound. The circular figure originates in a vital, ages-old moving force in music-making, and it demands a dance-like execution. But the canon is also, through the interaction of the strictly ordered voice entries, convivially bound musical form. Carl Orff was able to choose no better fitting musical form for the Greetings to Youth at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich than the medieval rota. In the connexion of the singing voices with the Orff instruments, today in world-wide use, a testimony of European tradition sounds in a living present.

Small Ensemble Bass Trombone - Level 5 - SKU: A0.810982 Composed by Wolking, Henry. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 23 pages. Gordon Cherry #4580703. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810982). Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Piano Solo - SKU: A0.1025184 Composed by Lackey, Mark (1966- ). 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score. 37 pages. Julian Date Music #4412715. Published by Julian Date Music (A0.1025184). Regarding his Sonata for Piano: Lasker, Mark Lackey writes: In composing a large new work for solo piano I wanted to write something original, something that felt honestly my own, that would still be appealing to pianists who love the great Romantic tradition. In particular, I found myself reflecting on Chopin and Liszt. Their works still stand as models, in a way, not only for having forged a pianistic style that is technically and sonically idiomatic, but for constructing beautifully balanced forms. I sought to express a similar formal balance, and a certain measure of technical virtuosity, with my own melodic sense and harmonic palette, my own underlying tonal logic, and with a beat that is at times obsessive, or irregular, or exuberant. The unusual subtitle 'Lasker' refers to the Lasker Summer Music Festival in rural North Carolina.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.855083 Composed by Albert L. Peace (1844-1912). Arranged by Joseph Pugh. Christian,Classical,Contemporary,Sacred,Standards. Octavo. 17 pages. Joseph Pugh #6133025. Published by Joseph Pugh (A0.855083). O Love that wilt not let me go.Dr. Matheson says this hymn was written in the Manse of my former parish (Innellan, Argyleshire) one summer evening in 1882. It was composed with extreme rapidity; it seemed to me that its construction occupied only a few minutes, and I felt myself rather in the position of one who was being dictated to than of an original artist I was suffering from extreme mental distress, and the hymn was the fruit of pain. This hymn first appeared in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work, in 1883. From thence it passed into the Scottish Hymnal 1884; and there set to special music by Dr. A. L. Peace. It is a beautiful and tender hymn and worthy of extensive use--John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)This SATB arrangement by Joseph Pugh is set with classical style piano accompaniment.

The American Seasons (score – violin and string orchestra) MO148AScore (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor99 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy. The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. Life's four seasons in perpetuity. Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.534657 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century,Concert,Standards. Score. 10 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5732665. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534657). In January 1913, Debussy struggled to complete Toomai des éléphants as the 11th prelude in Book2, finally replacing it by a rather Stravinskian study Les Tierces alternées. However, his daughter Chouchou was fascinated by elephants and in the summer of 1913, Debussy wrote her a ‘Toybox Ballet’ (La Boîte à joujoux) which contains a ‘Pas de l’éléphant’ and an ‘old Hindu chant which is still used to train elephants [in India]. It is constructed on the scale of “5 o’clock in the morningâ€,which means it must be in 5/4 time.’ My reconstruction of this lost prelude is based around this material and it evokes a day in the life of Toomai, the young mahout, and his faithful elephant Kala Nag from one dawn to the next, incorporating the legendary ‘Elephants’ Dance’ from Rudyard Kip ling’s First Jungle Book (1894) which only Toomai was ever privileged to witness. The version presented here is the revised second version of this prelude which contains an effect of piano harmonics as the dawn returns towards the end.

Level 5 - SKU: A0.913634 Composed by James Marshall. Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 101 pages. James Marshall Music #6384885. Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913634). Loops, Mosaics, Images and Patterns for mallet percussion ensemble and electric piano relies heavilyon repeated patterns and textures sustainable by these instruments. Loops is constructed from motifs establishedby each instrument. Each motif loops around, overlapping each other to create a musical texture. Mosaics and Images were begun after a reunion trip to Washington, DC. Mosaics recalls the jazz music of Miles Davis I would listen to it on hot summer evenings with the windows open. The Sketches of Spain album. Later I visited Barcelona the home of bothGaudi and Picasso. Images must have been a premonition. It was only after I saw the exquisite stained glass windows of the Gaudi Sagrada Familia that I was able to complete this movement. Patterns is just that. Changing patterns in my own fashion. A colleague suggested substituting a fourth marimba for second xylophone in this movement to provide a more mellow texture.

Piano,Violin - Level 4 - SKU: A0.534738 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century,Concert,Standards,World. 19 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #6606487. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534738). In January 1913, Debussy struggled to complete Toomai des éléphants as the 11th prelude in Book 2, finally replacing it by a rather Stravinskian study Les Tierces alternées. It is constructed on the scale of “5 o’clock in the morningâ€, which means it must be in 5/4 time.’ My reconstruction of this lost prelude is based around this material and it evokes a day in the life of Toomai, the young mahout, and his faithful elephant Kala Nag from one dawn to the next, incorporating the legendary ‘Elephants’ Dance’ from Rudyard Kipling’s First Jungle Book (1894) which only Toomai was ever privileged to witness. The version presented here is the revised second version of this prelude which contains an effect of piano harmonics as the dawn returns towards the end.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - SKU: A0.938389 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 46 pages. Colin Bayliss #6143. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the third movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ and - for this 6th quartet: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bayliss-string-quartet-no.-6/id573669350.

The American Seasons (cellos part – violin and string orchestra) MO148GCellos Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor46 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra. The American Seasons (2nd violins part – violin and string orchestra) MO148E2nd Violins Part (score and parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor36 pages - 38:00 minutes in length The American Seasons(Seasons Of An American Life)The American Seasons (Seasons Of An American Life) is a concerto for Violin And Chamber Orchestra.
