Prelude 1 in C Major Ionian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden.  The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.

It has an ABAC structure and was originally written in the key of B-flat major.The melody combines the music's contradictory possibilities. The downward thrusts of the opening phrases suggest emotional despair, while the final line, with its repeated high notes, sounds almost jubilant. It usually runs in an average time.All of Me first came to public notice when a performance by Belle Baker was broadcast on the radio in 1931. After that a few others also became successful.Frank Sinatra recorded several versions of All of Me. Its 1948 release peaked at No. 21. He also sang it in the film Meet Danny Wilson, which may have helped Johnnie Ray's performance reach No. 12 in the charts that year. Sinatra's use of All of Me brought a non-jazz audience to the song, as did Willie Nelson, whose version was included on his Stardust album and reached No. 3 on the Hot Country Songs chart in 1978. In 2000, All of Me of Me received the Towering Song Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Last month I went to visit a friend of mine in Canton, GA, and it inspired me to write this song. It's kind of like one of my earlier compositions Kentucky Hills. Georgia is definitely one of my favorite states, and I absolutely *love* to travel. No matter how long the drive, I will go anywhere if I am determined enough. This was a seven-to-eight hour drive and was definitely worth it. Earlier this year I also drove up to University of Northern Florida in Jacksonville, FL, which is two and a half hours north of me. From there I took a friend up to Jekyll Island, which was beautiful. Speaking of UNF, that is where I am going for my fall term. I'm going to major in music education and also finish my AA up there. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522191). My Flute and Me consists of fourteen short and delightful pieces written especially for absolute beginners up to students at elementary level. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for many beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! The music is identical to that in the companion book My Recorder and Me. Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. My Saxophone and Me consists of fourteen short and delightful pieces written especially for absolute beginners up to students at elementary level. The book comes in two versions, one for B flat saxophones and the other for E flat instruments. However, for obvious reasons you cannot mix B flat and E flat instruments in the same group. The pieces are intended as supplementary material to your usual tutor books. The music can be used with any number of players and the pieces remain in the lower register. Several early pieces use only the notes B, A and G and the key of G major predominates. Six of the pieces use only half notes (minims) and quarter notes (crotchets). The low C, a tricky note for some beginners, has been avoided almost completely. On the one occasion it appears, the note C an octave above is given as optional. Although the pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty you can play them in any order you want, depending on the musical needs of the student. Your students are sure to enjoy these pieces, which are both easy on the fingers and easy on the ear! Several pieces have a few measures (bars) rest in the middle not only to give the player a break and add musical contrast but also to give the experience of counting empty bars during the music. When space allows, piano cues appear in the solo part. Some of the later pieces in the book have good performing potential and could be strung together in any order to create a small suite. Every piece has a short piano introduction so that the student can sense the tempo and musical style before playing. The keyboard accompaniments have been kept as simple as possible with the minimum number of notes. Dynamic markings (e.g. piano and mezzo-forte) are used from the start, but phrasing has been omitted from the solo part. This is because the teacher is usually in the best position to suggest phrasing within the physical capabilities of each student. Slurs have been employed sparingly and only when necessary. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular and optimistic lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune.
