Â This imaginative arrangement of 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' with the final verse of 'Love Divine, All Loves Excelling' for soprano solo and orchestra begins with a pianissimo muted string texture as we fix our eyes upon the cross of Christ before crescendoing to a glorious finale in which we lay our crowns before the King of all Creation. Â This would be a perfect addition to a concert with full symphony orchestra and a soprano soloist with an extensive vocal range. Clephane 1830–1869 (lyrics) and Frederick Charles Maker 1844–1927 (melody) ♫ In preparing to compose the arrangement I asked myself “What would be the opposite of “Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand.†How could I picture that? The opposite of firm footing, stability, taking a stand is vacillating between ideas or chasing numerous ideas. ♫ I pictured the wind scattering leaves and debris, but failing to budge heavy objects, anchored to the ground. ♫ Our culture bids us chase after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills … The problem, of course is that the shelf life of the satisfaction that these things brings is very short. Chasing after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills, etc. is like is like chasing the wind. ♫ Portraying chasing the wind allowed me to use some contemporary classical composition techniques such as polymeter, polytonality, and deliberate dissonance. The first theme suggests the futility and inevitable frustration of chasing the wind. It is also appropriate as a meditation hymn or for any liturgical celebration that glorifies the Cross of Christ. While it is written to be sung a capella, chords are included so that a simple piano, organ and/or guitar may accompany the singers.I am in the process of building my website. The introduction is plaintive where it leads into the tune presented by the violin in double stops. The consequent phrase gives the tune to the viola. A modulation takes place and the melody is once again placed in the hands of the violin. This time the consequent phrase is a quasi duet in the viola and cello. The last section begins with imitative entrances of each of the instruments until it solidifies into a solemn end.
