The title alludes to Ode to the West Wind by nineteenth century British poet Percy Shelley. A breezy classicism in the first movement, Breath of Autumn, gives way to an elegiac second movement marked Grave. This movement, Tangles of Heaven, is dedicated to Toledo's great musical leader Bernard Sanchez who died in October, 2013. Heritage writes, While I was composing the quintet, the news came suddenly - and with a great sense of shock and tragedy - that Bernie had died. Deeply saddened, I realized that the second movement was taking shape as an elegy to a great friend. The flute plays an angular, emotional melody, accompanied by somber chords in the rest of the ensemble. An optimistic energy pervades the third movement, Crystalline Streams, interrupted by moments of lyricism and humor. Throughout the 10-minute work, Heritage explores the unique timbres of each instrument and the rich textures of the woodwind quintet. The Toledo Symphony Woodwind Quintet premiered To the West Wind at the 2015 Festival of New Music at The University of Toledo. Performers were Joel Tse, flute; Michele Tosser-Smith, oboe; Georg Klaas, clarinet; Sandra Clark, horn, and Gareth Thomas, bassoon.

I have spread the voices around, so there is NOT a constant tutti of all 5 players The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is no 4 of the Sequenz Recordare At 130 measures, the Recordare (Remember) is the work's longest movement, as well as the first in triple meter the movement is a setting of no fewer than seven stanzas of the Dies irae. The form of this piece is somewhat similar to sonata form, with an exposition around two themes (mm. 1–37), a development of two themes (mm. 38–92) and a recapitulation (mm. 93–98). It suits the wind quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.

Crystal Veil Suite was composed in 2018 for REVEL, an Austin, Texas based classical music group led by Dr. Carla McElhaney, and for Chorus Austin, also of Austin, Texas, Ryan Heller, Artistic Director. The premiere of the piece took place on December 1, 2018, at the Existential Solstice concert, part of REVEL's Radio Project concert series. The Existential Solstice concert, a collaboration between REVEL and Chorus Austin, featured music and poetry meant to elicit vivid imagery of winter scenes. As a lifelong Texan, this required a stretching of my creativity, as you well might imagine. The A section of the first movement, The Snow, was written in Phyrigian mode to evoke the melancholy mood that may accompany a long winter, with descending patterns in the viola and the right hand of the piano painting a gentle snowfall. The B section contrasts with a faster tempo, suggesting an intensification of the snowfall, before returning to the melancholic A section. The second movement, Frost and Wind, paints a snowstorm with its faster tempo, swirling winds in the right hand of the piano and in the choir, and bitter frost evinced in all voices. Finally, in the third movement, Snow, a shift to the major mode and tranquil melodic lines suggests a return to a gentle snowfall following the storm, with contemplative motives in all voices, until a lone robin's voice and sunlight bring us hope of spring's return.

Arranged standard wind decet/dectet/bass Mozart's textual inspiration is apparent in the Tuba mirum (Hark, the trumpet) movement, which is introduced with a sequence of three notes in arpeggio, played in B♠major by a solo tenor trombone, unaccompanied, in accordance with the usual German translation of the Latin tuba, Posaune (trombone). Two measures later, the bass soloist enters, imitating the same theme. At m. 7, there is a fermata, the only point in all the work at which a solo cadence occurs. The final quarter notes of the bass soloist herald the arrival of the tenor, followed by the alto and soprano in dramatic fashion. On the text Cum vix justus sit securus (When only barely may the just one be secure), there is a switch to a homophonic segment sung by the quartet at the same time, articulating, without accompaniment, the cum and vix on the strong (1st and 3rd), then on the weak (2nd and 4th) beats, with the violins and continuo responding each time; this interruption (which one may interpret as the interruption preceding the Last Judgment) is heard sotto voce, forte and then piano to bring the movement finally into a crescendo into a perfect cadence. My arrangement gives the trombone part to the first horn, and the vocal entries are given to the 4 wind instruments (All Player 1) I have added some additional sustaining notes on the horns, under the syncorpated section. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence).
