Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in D major, op. 6 no. 5: 1. Larghetto-Allegro – majestic introduction and a vigorous fugato; 2. Presto – humorous and surprising; 3. Largo – nostalgic, in the style of Corelli; 4. Allegro vivace – even more humorous, brilliant, high-spirited and driven (and also evoking D. Scarlatti and Telemann); 5. Menuet (Un poco larghetto) – appeased and varied. Total duration 15 min. Gigue Fiddle Sonata for violin, cello and piano composed and adapted by Mark O’Connor was a commission from the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C. It was premiered in Jefferson Hall during their prestigious ‘97-’98 chamber music season. The Library was featuring piano in their programming that year therefore requesting O’Connor to compose utilizing the instrument. The premier was broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and was also the centerpiece for a national public radio special America’s Fiddler, Mark O’Connor at the Library Of Congress. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. For inspiration O’Connor used these influences as well as those from the French Canadians. Published by Saunders Music (A0.1349574). Transcription of all six of J.S. Bach's cello suites BWV 1007-1012 for ukulele (gCEA tuning) from the urtext. All pitches are maintained from the original but there are some octave transposition, changes to the contour of the line (such as with the shape of arpeggios) or revoicing chords to fit the ukulele's smaller range. The transcriptions avoid a lot of campanella playing to maintain a clearer sense of line, especially in the runs. Open strings are mostly used to facilitate position changes, and as pedals. Some of the chords use higher pitches on the fourth string to complete the harmony where necessary. Where this happens, the melodic line is normally on the first or second string to give it extra weight or emphasis if the chord is rolled. Suite No.4 has been transposed from E flat major to G major and No.6 from D major to G major, in both cases to avoid some of the problems with register, and to enable greater use of open string pedals. The other suites are in their original keys.

English • German.Belgian cellist Jules de Swert was born on 15.8.1843 in Leuven; he died in Ostend on 24.2.1891. His first cello lessons were with his father in Leuven, then from 1856 to 1858 he studied with Adrien Francois Servais in Brussels. Immediately after completing his studies he embarked on a very successful concert tour across Denmark, Sweden and Germany. He then found employment in Düsseldorf, Weimar – and Berlin, where he was Director of Music at court and teacher at the Academy of Music. In Vienna he was then appointed principal cellist at the Imperial Opera and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1888 de Sweet returned to Belgium, where besides teaching at Conservatoires in Ghent and Bruges he also worked as a conductor. Despite his busy concert schedule and teaching commitments, Jules de Swert still found time for composition. Alongside original pieces for cello and piano as well as transcriptions (particularly of works by Chopin) he composed two cello concertos, several orchestral works and operas. This transcription of Chopin’s Valse in E minor was published in 1876 (plate no. 22003).

In addition, there are parts for Strings as we are preparing for a Tour which combines a Sinfonia and Junior concert band making a big sound. The keyboard parts have the chords written and notation for both approaches and I arranged a shortened version for our House Music Competition and it worked really well. The arrangement works without the 2nd or 3rd parts as the piano picks up the harmonies along with the strings. This is the premier performance of Glacier Bay by String Trio Black Diamonds - just one day after Arthur Breur composed the piece and provided the trio with the score and parts. They performed the piece in the atrium of the Norwegian Sun on July 3, 2016. With gratitude to Captain Richard Svardmark and the entire crew of the Norwegian Sun. Arthur Breur composed Glacier Bay in a single day on the Cruise Ship Norwegian Sun as it toured Glacier Bay, Alaska. Waking very early that day, Arthur was greeted with foggy, gray, mysterious views in an eerie northern twilight, and the mood set him immediately to composing. As he often does, he started by constructing the ten letters of the name Glacier Bay into musical notes. He divided these ten notes into three similar musical motifs, first three notes [G-E-A], then four notes [C-B-E-D], then three notes again [B-A-D]. These motifs open the piece, in a section that represents the eerie, misty, wet, half-lit morning. Then-expressing wonder and excitement upon seeing the beauty and majesty of Alaska’s glaciers-the motifs are connected with moving lines of notes that turn the original disconnected motifs into a flowing, uplifting melody. Between stops at the enormous bay’s different glaciers, the ship moved slowly through foggy vistas. The middle section of the piece represents this with a more dissonant, nervous sound. (Listen carefully for the sound of the ship’s fog horn-which really is a low F-sharp!-played by the cello.) But after passing through the fog, there was another awe-inspiring glacier, and so the music returns to the uplifting, flowing melody once again. Today, Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is considered to be the last great harp player of Ireland and is surrounded by an almost mystical aura. Numerous anecdotes have been handed down which testify to a strong personality, a huge musical talent and enormous self-confidence. Unlike any other, he knew how to combine old Irish music with Italian Baroque music, thus creating a large number of compositions about 200 of which have survived. Beautiful pieces between folk and art music. 16 of them were selected by Patrick Pföß and arranged for string trio. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.575837). Originally written for a Delian suite for various composers remembering Schoenberg back in 2006, I have now revised it and provided separate parts. The piece is atonal and satirically based on Twinkle twinkle little star by way of a supposed reaction from Pluto after it was relegated from planet to dwarf planet by astronomers here on earth. I wrote the following introduction for the Delian suite version: 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' (Jane Taylor's poem used for the tune to the French song Ah, vous dirai-je maman) is given an atonal treatment, for string quartet, in memory of the 'lost' planet of Pluto. Of course Pluto is still there, merely changed in the human taxonomy, which deems it to be no longer a planet. Similarly Twinkle, Twinkle is no longer a nursery rhyme but a strange atonal piece with memories of its past self moving towards an unknown space. It will be curious to know at which age a child recognises the twinkle-twinkle motif in this new, totally untraditional version. However, atonal though it is, it still appears to have some kind of 'home.' 'Ah, vous dirai-je maman, ce qui cause mon tourment,' ce n'est plus la petite chanson d'enfants, elle s'en va vers les étoiles dans un astronef de quatuor à cordes atonal. Son tourment?: Sa lamentation ne vise que la taxonomie humaine des planètes-Pluton, tu n'est plus planète? Maman! où se trouve la réalité, où se trouve notre domicile? Nous avons tous nos taxonomies, mais la réalité est en dehors... Le sens de tonalité est en dehors... Mais malgré tout, on reconnaît la mélodie... N'est-ce pas?.

Famously adapted by Simon and Garfunkel with the words I'd rather be a hammer than a nail the origins of this melody are traced back to the Peruvian Andes. It was also used by the composer Daniel AlomÃa Robles in a Zarzuela in 1913. Nowadays the song is played by Andean pipe flute ensembles in tourist spots all over the world.

Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. The movements of Concerto grosso in E minor, op. 6 no. 3: 1. Larghetto – a serious sarabande 2. Andante – a tragic fugato, reminding of J.S. Bach’s style (and of the theme of D. Scarlatti’s so-called ‘Cat Fugue’) 3. Allegro – stern, Italianate and a bit strange 4. Polonaise (Andante) – pastoral, yet courtly, in G major 5. German • English • French.The composition was composed in response to a poem written in 1992 by Karl Dietrich Hepp (Kaspar Damian Hosp under his pen name). The first letters of the individual movements of the string trio are H E P P: Halcyon, Ethereal, Pointillist and Perpetuum. The poem by K.D.H. was inspired by a photo of his father taken on a ski tour in 1931. Both, the poem and the photo are printed in the edition and everything adds up to a fascinating, artistic chain reaction. The diatonic material of the first movement in the composition by Waterhouse expresses optimism, energy and liberation. The 2nd movement is a study in pianissimo harmonics. The following 3rd movement is a pizzicato study in a bright and vivid harmonic tableau. In the last movement, a kind of Moto Perpetuo, the musical material continually transforms. Graham Waterhouse (*1962) was born into a musical family and has lived in Munich since 1992 where he is active as a freelance composer and cellist. He received his musical education at Cambridge University and at music colleges in Essen and Cologne. His works to date comprise mainly chamber music and instrumental concerts. Waterhouse performs as a solo cellist and in various chamber music formations. He has performed his own Cello Concerto in Toluca, Mexico City, Gorkij, Weimar and Baden-Baden.
