Shadow Dance and Lament - for solo oboe and piano - by Kenneth BairdA most enjoyable and fresh choice for solo contest, festival, or recital. Beginning with a playful allegretto with an almost oriental sound, the melody reflects the shadow of a young person dancing. The next section is beautiful melody in a lyrical and expressive style. A very quick flourish then follows featuring a technical interplay between the oboe and the piano. The composition then concludes with a restatement of the original playful melody. This was composed in 1991. This new 2023 edition includes more detailed dynamic markings and a revised ending.

Classic Dance by Kenneth Baird recreates this stately traditional highly formal style of dance music. Enjoyable parts for all, a variety of basic bowings (two-note slurs, staccato quarter notes, slurred staccato), and a variety of dynamics make this an excellent choice for developing ensemble precision with early intermediate string orchestras. Entirely in first position (except for bass), Classic Dance could also provide a rewarding challenge for the final concert of the year for an outstanding beginning string orchestra. As was common in 18th century orchestra music, the cello and bass parts are virtually identical making Classic Dance musically satisfying even when performed without bass, whether by a string quartet or by a small string orchestra lacking basses. An optional violin III part is also provided for ensembles that are short-handed in viola. A rehearsal piano part is also included. String Orchestra (also suitable for string quartet). Early Intermediate or end of 1st year.

The Left hand plays the note first, while the right hand bounces off the same note in a ricochet.Use the right-forte pedal lightly and constantly, but do not blur, the pedal must be used in accordance with each rubato and phrase, as in Chopin but subtly enough to render Molto Cantabile e Brilliante. Constantly, means up and down frequently, do not hold pedal down, a cluster blur is not desired, in this first part of the score. Later on, pedal markings will indicate a blend of the sound, when  wanted.The first performance was by the composer at The Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in 1978. The work was part of the piano seminar of Herbrt Hencke and was considered unplayable by one pianist.The American premire took place by the composer in 1979 on Julius Eastman's Festival at the The Third Street Music School in New York.The local premiere took place once again by the composer on a Creative Associates concert in Baird Hall at SUNY Buffalo in 1979 on a program of works by Giacinto Scelsi.The Ohio premeire took place in 1995 at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University played by the composer for the last time where it was danced by the Vicki Uris Dance Company.

A bold opening, a gorgeous Andante, and an impressively supportive piano accompaniment highlight this solo for the young trumpet player. The contemporary harmonies in the piano accompaniment help give this solo a much more mature sound than most solos at this level. While musically substantial enough to be suitable for younger high school players, Call to Glory's modest technical demands make it suitable for middle school and junior high school trumpet players. Upper range is only up to concert D (4th space E for the Bb trumpet) with one optional concert Eb. Rhythms include eighth, quarter, half, and whole notes and rests (no 16th notes, dotted quarter or dotted eighth notes, or syncopation...yet, this is a very mature-sounding work). Trumpet solo with piano accompaniment. An excellent choice for contest or studio recital! (Grade 2).

Published by Kenneth Baird Music (A0.726449). The Adventurer: Suite for Eb Alto Saxophone and Piano, by Kenneth Baird, is a short (3:40) three-movement work in a bold contemporary style. The first movement is a joyful allegro that is filled with syncopation, harmonic surprises, and echoes of Gershwin and Bernstein. The second movement is an adagio that begins peacefully, adds a little more motion with a pentatonic melody, and then returns to a peaceful mood, concluding with a harmonic question. The suite then concludes with a lively and spirited dance-like allegro that alternates between 3/4 and 6/8, and may, for some, invoke images of a pirate-like nautical adventure, while also sounding somewhat like a Latin American dance tune. Requiring good technical agility and security with syncopated rhythms, the Adventurer: Suite for Eb Alto Saxophone is a refreshing change from the standard contest repertoire written for this intermediate level and will be a delight both for the performers (soloist and accompanist) and for the listener. An alternative, less technically challenging ending is provided for less-advanced performers. The composer notes that although the Adventurer was originally composed for trumpet, he feels it works equally well on the alto saxophone and that the saxophone version should not be construed as a lesser version than the original trumpet version. Great for performances at solo contests/competitions as well as at recitals. .
