Sweetwater Brass Press #4819845. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808695).   Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his third opera, The Snow Maiden, during the period 1880-1881. Based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s play of the same name, The Snow Maiden uses fairy-tale characters to portray the opposing forces of nature, winter versus summer. Act 3 contains the Dance of the Skomorokhi. Skomorokhi were traveling performers in old Russia and, in connection with this composition, the term is usually translated as tumblers or clowns. Rimsky-Korsakov also included this selection as one of four movements he compiled into a concert suite based on the opera. Dance of the Tumblers has become one of his most frequently performed and best known pieces.  Light and uplifting, Dance of the Tumblers is vibrant, energetic and addictive. It takes the form of, as one commenter wrote, a classical sonata-structure, complete with development section, invigoratingly intensified reprise, and a veritable whirlwind of a coda. This brass quintet arrangement retains the original key signature of C but adjusts register to make the melodies accessible and playable. As a result, most notes are well within the normal playing range of the five brass instruments. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its A above the staff. At measures 132 and 133, Trumpet 2 has the option of playing some high notes (including one C above its staff) an octave down. Tuba plays mostly in the lowest register, with quite a few low F notes and one low E. Most instruments have some octave jumps, but all have a lot of notes to play in a very short time: many, many sixteenth notes. The score is marked Vivace, and the audio sample moves along at a pretty fast clip. But of course, the speed at which performers actually play the piece is up to them, a matter of interpretation.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 38 seconds. Shall We Dance, from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King And I, debuted on Broadway in 1951 and in the movie version in 1956, with Deborah Kerr lip-synching Marni Nixon as she and Yul Brynner polka around the Siamese palace. This arrangement draws from the movie rendition, which ranks No. 54 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie songs. But don't play it in Bangkok. Thailand banned the movie (and a subsequent remake) not long after its release, based on the not entirely inaccurate assessment that it reflects poorly on the Brynner character, the real-life King Mongkut, great-great-grandfather of Thailand's current monarch. The flute trio in this movement posed a similar challenge to the celeste in the Sugar Plum Fairy Dance, and I have dealt with it the same way - by replacing the usual 3rd oboe part with 3 solo oboes that play the 3 flute parts. Fortunately, the flute parts are playable on oboe as-is. Much as I would have liked to have lower the key to avoid the high G's in the top part, doing so makes the bottom part awkwardly low, and also takes the English Horn solo too low for its range. Otherwise, this is a pretty standard transcription, with the 1st/solo parts being considerably more difficult than the 2nd and 3rd parts.

GigueDance Suite for Two Clarinets was composed in the fall of 2019 and is a Baroque-styled suite in four movements, a prelude, minuet, sarabande, and gigue. As a clarinetist, the advancement of original clarinet compositions is something I find important.Each movement composed was modeled after that of the Bach Cello Suite No. 1. The form of each movement is pretty standard as it would be during the Baroque era. The rhythm is kept fairly simple as rhythmic progression or showcase was not the point. The point of the duet is in the melodic and harmonic development through using modern tonalities and techniques. Another technique used in the suite was featuring both players, creating an illusion that only one person is playing when both are playing.

It is the seventh of the ten Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers films. George Gershwin wrote the symphonic underscore and Ira Gershwin the lyrics, for their second Hollywood musical. Tony Bennett also included it on his Steppin' Out LP. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements, we also added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills.
