B-Flat Trumpet,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549566 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508107. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549566). Duration: ca. 3:20, Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. A delicate masterpiece, not very difficult - suitable for a recital encore. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1263847 Composed by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Classical,Hip-Hop,Pop,R & B,Rock. 107 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #856760. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1263847). Listen to this piece hereKids in the Corner is a piece especially composed for Thomas Smith, a family friend and former trumpeter, as a personal thank you for his generous donation to my “ Get Matt to Maryland†Rally via rally.org.With this work I aimed to explore some dance styles that don’t tend to be invited to other suites. I wanted to challenge myself with these various styles while infusing the quirkiness of Thomas into the heart of the piece.I. HipThis summer I was able to pass through New York City on my way to a graduate school audition. On the train ride there I ended up next to a kid who was grooving to music I could hear snippets of through his headphones. This movement reflects characteristics of the sounds I heard on my way into the city.II. One for the lovebirds…It’s time to cuddle up next to your partner and take a trip down memory lane. This movement is an ode to the slow songs one may have experienced from a dance in the 1950’s.III. SwungFor quite some time I have been intrigued with early instrumental dances and this movement explores their defining characteristics while hinting at this work’s overall structure.IV. Posh, Prim, and ProperThis axiomatic propinquity of the Minuet and Trio is a coruscating combination of tonal and temporal creation. A suite as brilliant as this is but an inchoate one without homage to music’s finest moment. It is propitious that I elucidated an exposition featuring a Bach cello suite with motives from the Brahms Requiem in fugal counterpoint set against themes by Mahler.V. JigA trumpet player I was performing with was warming up before a concert and cascading a peculiar series of long tones in to the hall. After he finished I approached him and asked him what he was playing. What he revealed to me was hilarious and this movement is homage to that occurrence.- Matthew NunesWindsor, December 2014.

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813064 Composed by Traditional French Melodies. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Christmas,Classical,Instructional,Multicultural,Standards,World. 22 pages. Regis Bookshar #6095939. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813064). Brass Quintet - Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Burgundian Air/March of the Three Kings, has been arranged for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, by Regis Bookshar. It incorporates two Traditional French melodies into one exciting arrangement, which, I'm certain, will entertain both performers and audiences alike. It is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for Christmas concerts and church services but could be performed anytime and anywhere. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (22 pages). It begins with a Burgundian Air, played by a solo French Horn. The melody is then played by the two Trumpets in harmony before the rest of the ensemble joins in. This is followed by the March of the Three Kings, a Provencal melody (La Marche Des Rois Mages) which dates from the 13th century and recalls the Three Kings of the Christmas story. The peasants probably sang and danced to this tune, even perhaps honoring their own folk heroes, the French dukes, dressed in their shining armor and carrying brilliant banners, as they marched off to the Crusades. George Bizet utilized this tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlesienne (The Girl from Arles). There is a fugal section in which each instrument enters, playing an embellished version of the tune before concluding the arrangement. Also available are other settings of these two Traditional French melodies for a variety of instrumental ensembles as well as numerous other arrangements in a variety of styles. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar. You may find something else which might interest you as well. I'm certain that students will enjoy playing this arrangement.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1446054 Composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck,. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Opera. 16 pages. Keith Terrett #1025876. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1446054). Orfeo ed Euridice is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama. The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot—the underground rescue mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions—can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold.Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.Ther picture is Count Francesco Algarotti, an Italian polymath, philosopher, poet, essayist, anglophile, art critic and art collector. He was a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and opera. He was a friend of Frederick the Great and leading authors of his times: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens, Pierre-Louis de Maupertuis and the atheist Julien Offray de La Mettrie. Lord Chesterfield, Thomas Gray, George Lyttelton, Thomas Hollis, Metastasio, Benedict XIV and Heinrich von Brühl were among his correspondents.''The Sicilienne and Rigaudon is one of the many pieces that violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler composed in the style of other composers. When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style. The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Instructional,Renaissance. 29 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #6644309. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.817168). They may be 500 years old, but these three Renaissance instrumental dances from Tillman Susato's 1551 collection The Third Little Music Book, prefaced with to be played on all types of musical instruments, remain appealing music for audiences and performers. These lively popular dances of the day feature homophonic setting, root position chords, primary beat stresses, and individual parts that encompass an octave or less which makes them very accessible for young or inexperienced musicians. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1410576 By Caetano Velosa. By Edward Eiscu, Gus Kahn, and Vincent Youmens. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Folk,Pop. 9 pages. Peet du Toit #992996. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1410576). (The) Carioca is a 1933 popular song with music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Edward Eliscu and Gus Kahn, as well as the name of the dance choreographed to it for the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio. It was sung in the film by Alice Gentle, Movita Castaneda and Etta Moten and danced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as part of an extended production dance number illustrating the ballroom dance. The dance, which was choreographed by the film's dance director, Dave Gould, assisted by Hermes Pan, was based on an earlier stage dance with the same name by Fanchon and Marco. The word Carioca refers to inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro.Astaire and Roger's short dance has historical significance, as it was their first screen dance together. Though billed fourth and fifth, many felt they stole the film, which became a big hit for RKO. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 7th Academy Awards, but lost to an even bigger Astaire and Rogers production number, The Continental from The Gay Divorcee (1934), their next film together and their first starring vehicle. They were billed by RKO as The King and Queen of 'The Carioca.'While the song has become a jazz standard, the dance did not have longevity. Following the success of Flying Down to Rio, an attempt was made to propagate it as a new ballroom dance, without much success. It was a mixture of samba, maxixe, foxtrot and rhumba. The distinctive feature of the dance â?? at least as portrayed in the movie â?? was that it was to be danced with the partners' foreheads touching.A French cover of the song was introduced in the comedy movie La Cité de la Peur (1994) along with a dance, also meant in a humoristic way. Both the song and the dance appear in the film that takes place in Cannes during the Cannes film festival in France, and have become a reference for a whole generation in France. 25 years later, in May 2019, the Carioca scene of the movie was celebrated in Cannes with a flashmob dance and by the actors themselves who danced again the mythic scene included in La Cité de la Peur.

Christmas,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 18 pages. Regis Bookshar #6615127. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813918). Brass Octet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Russian Dance from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's extremely popular, The Nutcracker Suite, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals but would be most appropriate during the Holiday season. This selection has been arranged to keep all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet with a score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video. The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892. The suite became instantly popular with almost every number encored at its premiere.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could also have the opportunity to play some of these wonderful compositions, originally scored for a full orchestra, and has arranged two of the selections, the popular March and the Russian Dance, one of the character dances, based on the Russian and Ukrainian folk dance, Trepak, for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. So, in addition to this version of the Russian Dance, for a Brass Octet, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection for various Quintets and Octets and are readily available. If you should decide to purchase this arrangement of the Russian Dance, I would highly encourage you to also consider purchasing the arrangement of the March as well. Scheduling the March followed by the Russian Dance would be a very satisfying addition to any concert or recital. Please take the time to look for other versions of these compositions. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as there are numerous selections in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. So, in addition to this version of the Russian Dance, for a Brass Octet, consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns and 3 Trombones, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection for various Quintets and Octets and are readily available. If you should decide to purchase this arrangement of the Russian Dance, I would highly encourage you to also consider purchasing the arrangement of the March as well. Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.921036 Composed by Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Michael Drennan. 20th Century,Halloween. Score and parts. 50 pages. Drennan Music Publications #6332813. Published by Drennan Music Publications (A0.921036). I arranged this piece in 2010 for my senior recital at Ithaca College. It comes from the ballet El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla, and has been one of my favorite arrangements that I’ve ever done. The trumpets are split between C Trumpet and B-flat Trumpet, and there is a Bass Trombone part instead of a Tuba part that would normally occur when combining two Brass Quintets together. When it was originally performed (see the video below) I gave the percussionist the score and let her have at it since I had no idea how to write for percussion at the time. Since then I’ve learned that skill and added two percussion parts to the piece. The first one splits Snare Drum and Bass Drum between two people, and the other has Crash Cymbals and Castanets, which can be played by one person. I view these percussion parts as optional, but they are fun and add quite a bit to the piece.
