My energetic saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone),â€All In†is a jazz piece that was inspired by Jimmy Giuffre’s  “Four Brothers†and all of the other great big band arrangers.  From them I learned so much about writing for the saxophone quartet in particular block chording. Further I did not score it for 3 tenors (or 1 alto 2 tenors) and bari and did not use the chord changes to Jeepers Creepers. I did enjoy creating colorful counterpoint and harmonies and tried to keep it in a light style like the Four Brothers recording.  While I did not include any improvisation it could be added perhaps using the chords from Jeepers Creepers.  All of this should make for challenging but enjoyable playing.  Note: all parts and the score are transposed in one pdf file. trt: 2’ 24 “ this work is: copyright 2023davekenneymusic I would love to get comments from you.Be Well Dave Kenneydavekenneymusic@gmail.com

Published by davekenneymusic (A0.966499). Shadow Puppets is the second movement of my first string quartet. My inspiration came from watching a video of a shadow puppet show presented in Indonesia. The puppets irregular and sudden movements inspired me to use the pizzicato and arco staccato sounds of the string quartet. The music is essentially a playful fugue with the second violin stating the main subject in imitation and which recurs frequently in the course of the work. I used a lot of different time signatures to mimic the irregular movements of the puppets.The fabric of the string quartet is based on my studies of the Bartok quartets with my composition teacher in NYC, Hall Overton. Published by davekenneymusic (A0.1404030). Desert Carnival is a challenging work for soprano saxophone and piano and was inspired by 1. Burning Man festival 2. Chick Corea’s exciting piece “Cappuccino†with Joe Farrell on soprano, amazing energy. While I have never been to a Burning Man festival I love the pictures and concepts of it, very visual and expressive. In fact in my work the opening theme on soprano is developed to represent a person walking and experiencing each part of the festival.  Chick’s work is pure passion and I imbued this attribute into Desert Carnival.Also I used the piano and saxophone as equal partners, this is not a piano part in the background supporting the sax but is an intricate part of the work.  This is a dialogue between the two instruments.Finally I am happy to announce that Desert Carnival will be recorded by the amazing soprano saxophonist Nicholas May you should check him out.

This advanced work is the first of a collection of Fantasies or miniature tone poems for piano . The piece is in three sections and has numerous influences, some Impressionistic, some Romantic and it always is difficult to try and fuse these styles while keeping them congruent. The shimmering opening portrays a fairie being chased by something or someone, which seems to gets closer and closer to her. This section ends with a series of dominant seventh/nine chords and a rallentando. The slower middle segment introduces a new melody and is where she is able to hide and catch her breath which then segues (via an accelerando) leading to her discovery and the chase resumes until her escape at the very end (I hope). The challenging left hand is the main engine for the melody, which is stated in the first measure and is presented again and again in different keys and accompaniment styles. The arpeggiated figures are influences of Ravel and Liszt but I tried to imbue it with a sense of delicacy even in some of the more powerful moments. This produces a light, which I imagine would coruscate in the evening forest. This work is appropriate for all pianist. Here's a chart designed for the last-minute gigging musician, by the last-minute gigging musician. Indeed, I got called in to sub on a wedding gig on less than a week's notice, and found this song right at the top of the list. Having not played or listened to it... ever, I decided to display some semblance of due dilligence and write out a version that would work in the range of a solo instrumental violin. Then, and don't ask me where this sudden magnanimous streak came from, I decided to spin up the same chart with lyrics and chord diagrams just in case I ever needed to play it with a vocalist.Out of the goodness of my heart, ALL of the above is available to you for the low low price of about 5 bucks. While I was tabbing this out from the perspective of a violinist, the range is pretty universal and should be playable on just about any treble clef instrument. Including the viola... although if you got hired to play solo viola at a wedding or a cocktail hour I have questions.It's nothing spectacular, but here's what I can promise you if you buy this chart:- THE CHORDS ARE RIGHT. I honestly can't believe there are people that get the chords to songs like these wrong on their arrangements, but here we are. Rest assured I am not one of them.- YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ IT. Finale collisions and terrible interpretations of vocal rhythms need not apply here.- THE MELODY WILL WORK ON YOUR INSTRUMENT. Again, this is not one of those hyper-transcriptions of every little vocal ornament that was sang on the studio version. I purposefully chose where to simplify vs. embellish the melody so that there's room for instrumental interpretation without getting lost in the details.May this humble arranger's last-minute busy work bring joy to your audience and at least an extra 30 minutes of sleep to you by not having to learn this song the night before the gig. Enjoy the hustle, friends.
