Will Corbin #1040044. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461185). This song has roots in a Mardi Gras chant that ostensibly came from some unspecified Native American language. James Sugar Boy Crawford turned it into a song, and his band, Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters (southern Louisiana had a lot of that) recorded it in 1953 as Jock-a-Mo, which may mean kiss my ass or a defiant response to that effect. It was recorded again, as kind of a whim, in 1964 by the girl trio The Dixie Cups, who made it a hit. It has since been endlessly covered by everyone from Cyndi Lauper to The Grateful Dead.This arrangement is essentially solo variations on the main melody backed by horn rhythms. If you want to make it go on endlessly, it's a simple three-chord tune (actually, mostly two chords) that lends itself to simple improv. 'Break My Soul' was the first single from 'Renaissance', Beyoncé's triumphant 7th album, which re-established her as one of the most influential and commercially successful artists of her generation. The textures of the single version are derivative of '90s house music, and the vocal textures and voicings are uniquely Beyoncé, while gospel-tinged in places. That said, the story of the song could not be more contemporary to the 2020s, referencing social division, the exploitation of gig workers and, of course, race. Its empowering, defiant yet joyous lyric makes the song perfect for any concert closer. This TTBB arrangement sticks to the complex phrasing and rhythmic complexity of the Beyoncé vocal, with some simplifications for choral use. Intended as a spectacular finale with dancers and live band, it also features some elements from her live touring version, and includes a solo part that would suit an MC, and/or and singer versed in Beyoncé's vocal stylings. Published by charliebmusic (A0.865879). ‘Togetherness’ is a Soca Carnival hit from the 2007 Trinidad carnival, and was sung originally by Alison Hinds on her ‘Soca Queen’ album, with music and lyrics by Leroy Brathwaite, who happens to be Rhianna’s uncle.Suitable for Pride, a Holiday celebration or any show about community, the song contains powerful lyrics about unity, community and togetherness, as well as mentions of stopping the fighting and gun violence. The half time reggae in the middle 8 leads to a defiant unison section where the entire ensemble declares ‘They can’t be believe that we love one another’. This leads to a final explosion of joy. Especially infectious, this tune demands audience participation and choir movement of some kind.The song itself is relatively repetitive and builds in energy with every return of the main chorus. It is vocally demanding and high energy throughout, demanding some vocal stamina and knowledge of Trinidad pronunciation. It could also be an opportunity to learn about the history and practice of carnival across the world, both as celebration of individuality and also as fighting oppression.

The text to this dramatic, intense song was inspired by the events of the summer of 2020; that said, the trope it addresses goes back for many years. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. 'Musica arcaica No.1' is the first piece in a series of chamber music works in which Schneider as a composer examines music of other cultures (songs, dances among others). The old Cypriot shepherd's song Voskos inspired the composer to apply the archaic composition techniques of drone, heterophony and ostinato. The song expresses different moods: The first half of the song is dominated by the yearning lament 'Im Pferch eingesperrt bin ich geboren, im Pferch werde ich sterben'. The second half sets the ecstatically and defiantly, but also proudly sustained thought of death 'Niemand von euch kennt den Tod, noch das Altern!' to music. Schneider presents these emotions in a convincing and exciting manner by means of instruments.
