Http://www.HenryMollicone.com Derri-air, a ragtime song for baritone and piano, was written during the production of the new feature-length documentary film, THE FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR- The Poem, the Place, the opera. The Face on the Barroom Floor refers to the famous picture painted on the floor of the Teller House Bar in Central City, Colorado (inspired by the poem by D’Arcy), and the opera I composed to John S. Bowman’s libretto in 1978, which was performed every season in Central City for 33 years, and continues to be my most performed opera. Film producer Lawrence Kraman found on the internet a poem which tells a similar story of another woman whose backside (clothed in a can can dress) was painted on the ceiling in a bar a few blocks away. Alas, the bar (and the lady on the ceiling) are no longer there, but for those who know the face poem, Bottoms up- or the end of the slip of a miss, the poem by Colorado’s Sid Squibb, published in 1951, is truly funny- a kind of parody of the Face poem, detailing in this case how the painting got to be done on the ceiling! -Henry Mollicone May, 2013 More information: http://henrymollicone.com/catalog/songlist/derri-air-2012/.

Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1526). Wynwood Walls draws on 9 artworks which lend their titles to the 9 connected sections of the quintet. The music reflects and amplifies my own subjective responses to the artworks.The movements are organised in pairs, circling out from a still centre – No Woman, No Cry. The title for this centrepiece comes from Chris Ofili’s moving portrait of Doreen Lawrence, the mother of a teenager murdered in an unprovoked racist attack. As well as this specific reference, the artist intended the painting to be read as a universal portrayal of melancholy, solace, and grief. The two segments flanking No Woman, No Cry complete the central triptych. Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks explores loneliness and isolation, while Grayson Perry’s #Lamentation is a meditation on remembrance and the transience of life. In contrast to the rest of Wynwood Walls, the music here is dark and introspective.I want my time with you is a giant neon sign designed by Tracey Emin for St. Pancras Station, London. Selfie with Sunflowers is an essay written by Julian Barnes about our over-familiarisation with Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower paintings. The music is sentimental, bordering on schmaltz and kitsch. Sunflower Seeds and Infinity Room are a pair of moto perpetuo scherzos inspired by the minimalist installations of Ai Weiwei and Yayoi Kusama respectively. The opening section, Bathers at Asnières, suggests Seurat’s iconic painting, while the finale, Seurat’s Bathers, evokes Howard Hodgkin’s reworking of the Seurat using a blaze of vivid colours.The title of the quintet is borrowed from the Wynwood art district of Miami – an area characterised by the hundreds of colourful street murals which decorate the walls of old warehouses in the neighbourhood. In performance, the artworks can be projected onto a screen behind the ensemble.Wynwood Walls s'appuient sur 9 œuvres d'art dont les titres prêtent leurs noms aux 9 sections connectées du quintette. L'idée un peu spéciale derrière cette musique, c'est que le violon est joué uniquement en pizzicato, ce qui veut dire que les cordes sont pincées au lieu d'être frottées avec l'archet. C'est un peu différent de ce qu'on entend habituellement, mais j'aime bien cette sonorité légère et délicate.L'ambiance de cette pièce est un peu étrange, entre le rêve et la réalité, comme si on était transporté dans un monde imaginaire. J'ai essayé de créer une atmosphère un peu magique et mystérieuse, inspirée par l'univers des elfes.

I worked from the original manuscript, in the British Library, so the phrasing and articulations are as authentic as can be. I believe this work translates to woodwinds admirably, and in its original key. The composer said these quartets cost him great toil and mental exertion, and I can testify to the presence of frequent corrections in the MS, even though that which I saw was presumably a fair copy!

Published by Derrick Thom. Lewis (A0.1217090). This is a “toccata†for whom? Answer: the celli, basses, bassoons and tuba, for this is a workout for those often under-challenged members. In addition, this a gem of a piece as regards its wonderfully concise construction and simple, satisfying form. It is historically ironic, given Berlioz' wild public image and antipathy to musical authority, that he could produce such a work as this so effortlessly, a product a pure intellect without seeming passion. This could serve as an effective curtain-raiser or a daily exercise in general rehearsal. As many characteristics of the composer as I could manage are to be found in this arrangement, viz. Tbn. on melody, High viola the same, W/w tremolos, Fl./vl. Unison melody, --thereby (hopefully) evoking the Corsair Overture, Harold in Italy, Sym.Fantastique, Nuits d'Éte.
