Bach's 1731 creation Mein Freund ist mein, Aria Duetto from BWV 140 is the 6th movement of the very popular sacred Cantata, Sleepers Awake (Wachet auf). The movement is a love duet between the Soul and Jesus (Trumpet 2 and Horn) with the top part as an obligato over the bouncy bassline. William G. Whittaker calls it a cantata without weaknesses, without a dull bar, technically, emotionally and spiritually of the highest order, its sheer perfection and its boundless imagination rouse one's wonder time and time again. (Wikipedia). Keith Terrett has beautifully arranged this gorgeous movement for a standard Brass Quartet of 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, and Trombone (with f-attachment). It is appropriate for advanced performers.

It was written for tenor, but given its accessible range (Db4 to G5 in the original key), it would work well for lighter voices in many fachs, including light lyric sopranos, baritones, and mezzos. The text, translated from a poem by Takuboku Ishikawa (1886-1912), is gender-neutral. This would be a great introduction to new music for an undergraduate singer with strong aural skills and a still-light voice (since young dramatics might overpower the harp).If you'd like to talk about commissioning a transposed score, please get in touch! Transposition options will be a bit more limited with the harp than with the piano, but I'm sure we could make something work.Poem text (in English translation, as it appears in the score)Setting sun, Drifting clouds, New moon, Evening twilight, What do they matter to me?Composer biography:Nicole Elyse DiPaolo is a versatile composer, teacher, collaborative pianist, and music theorist currently based in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently a PhD candidate in music theory at Indiana University, she recently completed a doctoral minor in composition, having studied with Claude Baker, Don Freund, P. Q. Phan, and David Schneider. She also holds a B.Mus. from the University of Michigan, where she studied composition with Bright Sheng and piano with Louis Nagel. Nicole's music has been heard across the world: along with numerous performances in the Midwest, her commissioned song settings of Muscogee poet laureate Alexander Posey's texts have been performed at Shorter College (GA) and Lincoln University (PA), and the Smithsonian Institution procured copies of two of these (Nature's Blessings and A Vision) to archive at the National Museum of the American Indian. Additionally, Nicole's viola duo Three Episodes was featured at Ball State University's 40th Annual New Music Festival in February 2010. Her early compositions have been garnering interest as well: music students in Kenya performed several of Nicole's such pieces in May 2013 through a pedagogical project spearheaded by IU faculty member Kimberly Carballo. Nicole's music also received its Mexican premiere in October 2013 with a performance of her Divertimento, written for the International String Quartet of Yucatán. In 2014, Nicole published a set of twenty short pedagogical pieces in uncommon keys, entitled Venturing Beyond, available on SheetMusicPlus. Also a sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Nicole frequently judges regional and divisional MTNA composition competitions at all levels, ranging from elementary to college-level Young Artists, and she also served as the composition department chair at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in 2014. More than just colleagues, they have become my friends: I've traveled with them, performed with them, watched them rehearse, dined with them in their homes and they in mine; I know their children and they know my children. Throughout the time I've known the members of the quartet I have observed the relationship between them, that special bond shared by the members of any touring band, described by one pundit as being like a bad marriage with no sex. Such issues notwithstanding, this particular marriage works. A string quartet represents, perhaps, the ultimate musical compromise between individual incentive and the common good. In a string quartet, by definition, four distinct instrumental voices and four different instrumental roles unite to create a whole greater than its parts. And, lest we forget, behind each instrument is a person, with his own particular attitudes, feelings, needs, and, yes, issues, all of which must be tempered and blended for the common good of a good performance. Among Friends is, its liberties aside, about the four people behind the instruments of the Alexander String Quartet and their relationships with one another; the way they play, rehearse, get along and, on occasion, not get along. The first movement, With Friends Like These is gritty and contentious in tone. The players argue, debate, annoy, tease, irk, cajole, abuse, harass, form brief alliances, heap merde upon, gang up on, and otherwise find endless ways to irritate each other. It is in this movement that the individual characters of the four instrumental parts stand in highest relief: the first violin as coloratura prima donna, forever attempting to soar above it all; the second violin as the voice in the wilderness, the viola as the voice of reason and the 'cello as mover and shaker. The opening of the movement is marked argument in progress; with greatest intensity. The second, third and fourth movements are a series of portraits, played without a break. In movement two, Inner Voices, the second violin and viola are featured in a collegial and decidedly non-contentious dialogue. Movement three, Little Hands and Little Feet, is the quiet center of the quartet. It is here that the first violin finally attains the lyric heights vainly sought in the first movement. The fourth movement is a vigorous dance entitled Freund Barry. This movement honors three great friends: Dr. Barry Gardiner, whose friendship and support made the writing of this quartet possible; Gustav Mahler, whose Symphony No. 4, second movement (Freund Heine) inspired this one; and Sandy Wilson, who first encouraged me to compose my second string quartet (Child's Play) for the Alexander in 1987 and whose boisterous 'cello is Freund Barry's alter-ego. The fifth movement is entitled Friendly Persuasion. Rapid fire repeated notes, accompanimental figures and melodic lines are shuttled about from voice to voice, each time elaborated or altered in some way. In this way the music slowly metamorphoses, ultimately arriving at a version of the argumentative music that concluded the first movement. Movement six, All For One and One For All is a fast, brief coda/finale, during which the quartet plays primarily in unison, the musical antithesis of the contentious argument that began the quartet. German.Im Frühling 1957 schrieb ich Nachtstücke und Arien, mit Ingeborgs Gedichten Freies Geleit und Im Gewitter der Rosen. Das letztere bestand anfangs nur aus einem Vierzeiler bis sie mir für die Komposition, aus Gründen der Symmetrie noch einen zweiten Vierzeiler hinzuschrieb, der das Gedicht noch viel schöner macht. In diesen Zeilen ist ungefähr die vorherrschende Stimmung von Nachtstücke und Arien wiedergegeben, auch wenn in der anderen Arie ein chorischer Hymnus aus eine schöne, atombombenfreie Zukunft gesungen und gespielt wird, was sich im instrumentalen Finale fortsetzt, in dessen Zentrum übrigens ein paar Noten aus dem Epilog von Ondine auftauchen. Mit dieser Musik hatte ich wohl die extremste Gegenposition zur sogenannten Darmstädter Schule erreicht, und so nimmt es denn auch nicht weiter wunder, dass bei der von Gloria Davy gesungenen und von Hans Rosbaud glänzend dirigierten Uraufführung am 20. Oktober 1957 in Donaueschingen drei Vertreter des anderen Extrems, Boulez, Nono (mein Freund der Gigi!) und Stockhausen, demonstrativ schon nach den ersten Takten von ihren Plätzen aufsprangen und den Saal verließen. So entwanden sie sich den Schönheiten meiner jüngsten Bemühungen! - Hans Werner Henze (Reiselieder mit böhmischen Quinten).

Die dreißigminütige Komposition exponiert ein musikalisches Thema, dessen wildwuchernde Veränderungen in drei Sätze gefasst sind, die einigen der berühmten acht Triagramme des 'I GING' (des Buches der Veränderungen) entsprechen: TSCHEN ist der Erwecker, der Donner, dem die Eigenschaften des Provokativen, Heftigen, des ungestümen Wachsens zugeordnet sind. KAN als Tiefe und Abgrund hat als Bild das Wasser, dem der Mond und alles Geheimnisvolle, schwer zu Verstehende und Melancholische entspricht (folgerichtig basiert dieser Satz auf einer 12Ton-Reihe und einer verschobenen spiegelsymmetrischen Rhythmik). TOUEI ist das Vergnügen, die Freunde, das Glück, die heitere Ruhe, dem das Bild des Sees entspricht. Die Veränderungen wollen nicht in Rhythmik oder Meldodik asiatische Vorbilder imitieren, sondern bleiben im Tonmaterial eher in den Sprachkonventionen der westlichen Musik. Der Brückenschlag zur chinesischen Musik gelingt vor allem durch den Einsatz der Sheng (eines der ältesten Musikinstrumente) und dem formalen Umsetzen der vorgegebenen geistigen Prinzipien in klangliche Wachstumsprozesse.
