Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799527). Silent Durations XVI (a Zen experience) is for any combination of 3 treble clef and 2 bass clef instruments, voices or sound objects. The work was written for and premiered by John M. Kennedy with the CSULA New Music Ensemble. Each movement has a distinct character. The first features both legato phrases and staccato punctuations. The second focuses on the instrumental and rhythmical color possibilities of the same E pitch with the occasional neighboring F. Homophonic movement is featured in the last movement sometimes breaking up into smaller ensembles. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The duration is 11'08. There is also a piano 4-hands version of this piece (Silent Durations XVIa)Silent Durations XVI was premiered by the CSULA New Music Ensemble conducted by John M. Kennedy at California State University Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA on November 18, 2004

Silent Durations Va (a Zen experience) is an altered percussion trio version of Silent Durations V. Instead of the drums being used as a time-keeper they are more a guardian of time. The choice of sticks and instrumentation provides the atmosphere and mood for each movement. The first movement is slow and develops the colors provided by the use of snare sticks, fingers and coins. The second movement is quicker and is only scored for triangle, maracas and sand block. The third movement is moderate in tempo and played with a diversity of sticks, mallets, beaters and brushes. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The work is in three movements with a duration of 15'18.

The varied colors of the different piano registers are highlighted in the last movement. It would be interesting to perform this piece on historical pianos or keyboards. There is no use of the pedal. Silent Durations XXII (a Zen experience) was written for the French saxophone virtuoso, Daniel Kientzy. It features Drake Mabry's usage of silence as a musical architectural device. The solo part for bass saxophone highlights the tonal variations of this instrument in its various registers. The slow first movement is followed by a rapid and invigorating second movement. This is the first part of a trilogy of works based on the same source material. The other works are Concerto for Kientzy and Silent Concerto Durations which brings together the previous two compositions as one work. It would be conceivable to play Silent Durations XXII on other Bb saxophones. The solo part is included with the parts. The duration is 20'40.

The collection includes duets incorporating a variety of contemporary techniques and concepts geared towards beginning players. This duet demonstrates my silent duration style of composition but with less long silences. A perfect introduction to this style. It was originally written for two soprano recorders but is playable on any two like recorders or instruments.
