She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

From composer Elegy for Solo Violin was designed and composed for middle to high level violin technique. There are almost no tunes for pure violin solo without accompaniment for these levels. Sonata by Esaye, or Tzigane by Ravel, are very difficult. So I thought many violinists need solos mid-high level. I am a violinist and also a composer. Today there are almost not exists composers who can play violin with high level, differ from 19C. Unfortunately the composer can not write such tune if he (she) can not play violin. This tune includes Dies Irae, same to Esaye, appears many times like cyclic form. The beginning is like Tzigane. These are tribute to the great composers. And the theme of 2/4 that appears at beginning and ending, are funeral march, like the feeling of Esaye's one. Please play with Tempo Rubato according to your feeling. Henri Duperey

At the time I was dealing with aggressive bullying and tremendous anger. I wrote the first movement while I was in Highschool and found myself becoming the bully and my rage turned to sorry for myself. The third movement was written in the style of a funeral march my freshman year of college as I was being kicked out of a religious institution due to my sexuality. Published by Modrana Music Publishers Ltd (A0.966280). Serenade For Solo Tuba Review Serenade for solo Tuba by David Golightly Modrana Music Publishers Ltd. The Serenade for solo Tuba was premiered by James Anderson, Professor of Tuba at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, England in May 1980. My only question is, why did it take so long to get published and into the repertoire of serious tubists all over the globe? It is definitely a welcome addition to the library of the solo tubist. Good solo pieces that are entertaining for audiences are quite hard to come by. This piece will most assuredly be one of those to join the ranks of Penderecki's Capriccio and Gregson's Alarum. The Serenade is set up in three movements and is metered throughout. The range of the work is from DD-g1. Movement One entitled March, is in 2/4 and m.m. equals 112. It is quite spirited in style and will require a performer with agile abilities to navigate through wide intervals and varied articulations. Movement Two is not your typical slow, melodic song that one would imagine from a title such as Elegy. It is extremely doloroso in nature and has the soloist soaring into the extreme upper range (g1) utilizing strict rhythmic patterns. The Gallop, movement three, is quite animated and encompasses mixed meters with the majority of the piece being in 6/8. ElegÃa a los Inocentes CaÃdos, which translates to Elegy for the Fallen Innocent, is a work for Chorus and Orchestra in memorial of the massacre that took place on Palm Sunday, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.A peaceful civilian march turned into a police shooting in which 19 civilians and 2 policemen were killed, and more than 200 civilians were wounded. Most of the dead were reportedly shot in their backs. The march had been organized by the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico and to protest the U.S. government's imprisonment of the party's leader Pedro Albizu Campos.A free twelve-tone matrix is the musical language and style used that reflects the brutal violence of this historic occurrence. The biblical text, from Ecclesiastes, also conveys and addresses the helplessness, the anguish, the outrage, and the injustices that, unfortunately, still keep occurring during our times.

Capriccio      This lively capriccio features a bouncy melody that is imitated in canon through the other two clarinets. Then the descending fourth motive introduced early is developed in a series of succinct statements. The movement ends with a three part canon with each clarinet racing against the others.  II. Elegy*     After someone leaves our lives there are lingering reminders of the pain of their absence combined with the sweetness of the happiest memories. The middle section represents a flashback to happier times yet the sustained notes hint that something is not quite right. In the end the melody is unable to resolve as it should yet those around it continue on their way.     *Please note that the bass clarinet player should play soprano clarinet for this movement only.  III. Frenetic      This piece would not have been written were it not for the prodding of my friend and fellow composer Felix Rivera. I would joke with him that he may never write a piece not based on tritones and he quipped back that I may never write a piece for clarinets. I decided it was time to fix not having a clarinet selection in my repertoire and this work is the result. I took some time to compose this musical elegy as a gift for Brett, Marina's widower and my horn-playing friend in the Omaha Symphony, in his time of mourning. It was delivered the day before Easter. The two-minute composition is rich with harmonies and independently moving lines that complement the melody, first presented in the horn part. As Marina was also a fine horn player, the symbolic gesture of extensive melodic content in the horn fits the passion expressed in the overall short work. One fervent cry soars strongly heavenward in the horn before the final quiet motif ends the musical condolence. This piece is offered at the lowest price allowed.
