Premiered July 15, 2023 at the Cascadia Composers In Good Hands student piano concert at Portland State University, in Portland, Oregon, USA.Composed in 2023.Level: Intermediate level; great for a high school student recital, but could be a very managable piece for a college student as well. Composition notes: The first of a trio of pieces called Breathing Structures, this piece was written for and premiered/performed by Andrew Bren as part of the Cascadia Composers' In Good Hands program (where composers write custom works student performers). This is a expressive, post-minimalist influenced composition, with flexible tempos and dynamics. Great for students who are interested in late 20th-century/early 21st-century classical music influenced by Philip Glass, John Adams, Michael Torke, and Ludovico Einaudi. The following poem serves as the program note for this work: The Emergence Stepping out that place of hidingAn infernal state of comfortWith smothering holds of safetyShielding from rays of lucidity. Stumbling forwardOne step pastThe formerly towering limit.A rush of adrenalineAn urge of retreatBut staying firmly plantedWith bristling folliclesAnd quickened breathing.Transformation is jarringShedding skin is tiringYet soon will exhilarateReleasing onwardLeaving old pathsAs distant dreamsPainted by the hazeOf the oncoming gleam.Performing Rights Organization: ASCAPComposer's website: https://www.nicholasyandell.com.

Having worked primarily nightshift for the past few years, my life began a somewhat alternative nature – my day time was illuminated by the moon, and I watched the sun rise every day for three and a half years…I saw the city through different eyes, and watched as various denizens of the night would emerge and cavort beneath The Midnight Sun. I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didn’t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn – the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream. David Jaedyn Conley, 2005 Composer David Jaedyn Conley moves easily between the stridency of the Moderns and the sweetness of the Romantics. Special instrumental effects and spoken dialogue contribute to a unique concert experience, excellent for a concert opener or finale. We hear touch tones, ringing phones, a 911 call, and emergency sirens as the phone call dances along the wires before plunging under the highway to finally emerge at a location of the ensemble's choosing. At about 2:15 in length, the piece offers some rhythmic and technical challenges for mallets and upper woodwinds, with an active part for low brass and woodwinds that provides a nice change of pace for those players. Bassoon, horn, and oboe parts are doubled in other instruments and may be omitted. Worksheet for reinforcing rhythms included.
