With influences ranging from Handel to Mannheim Steamroller, I wanted to write something that expresses the full glory of this hymn. While the hymn itself has 7 verses, I only chose to use four of them including the fifth verse referencing Sinners…doomed for guilt to endless pains where I moved to a minor key before coming back for the final verse and a return to the musical material of the opening.

Labé was fluent in Latin and Italian, and a trained musician. She wrote twenty-four sonnets. TRANSLATION Sonnet VIII - I Live, I Die I live, I die, I burn with fire, I drown. It matters very little what I feel; All life is now too real, now too surreal; Joy comes and endless boredom weighs me down, And suddenly I laugh and then I cry; With grief and bliss I’m weeping for the past; Good feelings go away and yet they last, And suddenly I bleed and then I sigh. This 12-tone project enamors the mind with blips of melody, sprinkled over the piano’s endless E-flats that simulate the pain of trying to get past the busy tone. It’s short and to the point on the premise and only takes the 80 seconds (ish, it’s up to you how fast/slow dial tones make you feel) to drive the sanity down.

“Évocations” is a suite for Piano solo, impressionistic, contemplative much in the trail of Satie, Debussy or Mompou. Intimist and suitable for aesthetic pleasure. This is a series of works that will lead you into an exotic journey to far away places. Just letyourself be drift away to a better place where the sounds will healyour soul.<br> <br> These Evocations range all degrees of difficulty, from very easy to more challenging ones. Therefore, are suitable for the classrom, recitals or family gatherings and parties.<br> <br> Evocation I – The Harvest<br> <br> The harvest in Alentejo, Portugal, occurs when the fields become tanned and a soft, warm wind coming from the south blows. It is the time of the year when you grab your hat made of straw and you let yourself be sunk ina sea of rye.<br> <br> Evocation II – The Sepia photograph<br> <br> Memories. They can be happy, bittersweet or painful... Sometimes nostalgia gets the better out of us. And then we are dragged into the past, into a suspended, slow and hypnotic time. Old sepia colored pictures in a drawer orscattered around our bed.<br> <br> Evocation III – The dead soldier<br> <br> The battle is over. Amournful wife, the weeping children. An everlasting pain shutteringour heart. And the hope that wherever he is, he is in peace now. And we are all proud of him. Thank you for serving our country.<br> <br> Evocation IV – The composer<br> <br> The tragedy of the blank page. An everlasting winter in our soul. Snow is falling, thepath is difficult to trail. Being an artist involves an incommensurable amount of suffering because we have to give it all. And even giving it all it isn't enough, and we feel drained and exhausted in the end.<br> <br> Evocation V – The Glowing Sun<br> <br> The blond hair and the most radiant smile one could ever imagine. She is a glowing sun, like an everlasting shine in the sky. She doesn't walk, she floats with extreme elegance across the street, and in the corner, she doesn't turn – she spins and swirls with heavenly grace.<br> <br> Evocation VI – The Far<br> <br> Longing. Eternally. I hope you've read my letters. I hope you've heard my calls. I opened my heart to you. Why do you take so long? Why can't I hear your voice? Why do you keep me waiting here. Here, so close, yet... so far... alone... forever...<br> <br> Evocation VII – The Queen of Spades<br> <br> The dark lady is the strongest in the deck. Mystical, fantastic, she wanders like a shadow in your world. Across the garden, carrying a sickle, she's just waiting to chop a head on the next turn.<br> <br> Evocation VIII – The Poem<br> <br> A book, a sonnet. Fourteen verses with rigorous metric, with a defined purpose. A parlor game, a riddle. Can you guess what's hidden inside these wondrous sounds?<br> <br> Evocation IX – The Thinker<br> <br> A desk loaded with books. The glasses. A mind always working, methodic, cold, rigorous. Numbers, hidden relationships, an everlasting connection with the abstraction.<br> <br> Evocation X – The Island of the Hydrangeas.<br> <br> A paradise on earth, smooth rain, narrow and sinuous roads. Walking, then biking, then driving around. An adventure in one of the most beautiful places in the world.<br> <br> Evocation XI – The Near<br> <br> When you're here everything will be beautiful. I can see it already in my head, the endless, passionate love, a tender sweet kiss that will last forever. Your lips on mine, while holding hands, in the bench, in the garden, under the tree. You are the one.<br> <br> Evocation XII –Saffron rice<br> <br> The rice is golden like your hair and your class. The sweet taste of nobility, the craft ofwisdom, the delicacy of experience. Maturity is what time brings, it is not a curse, it is a gift that we should embrace and respect.

This is the collection of classical piano repertoire I created for work with my own students, most of whom were not primarily interested in "classical" music. <br> <br> In my experience, every elementary piano student should be given the opportunity to successfully play:<br> Spinning Song (even if you leave out the middle section at first)<br> Minuet in G (page one)<br> Fur Elise (page one)<br> <br> Eventually, they should experience (if not master--that's ultimately up to them) each piece in this collection. <br> <br> All hand positions and finger numbers are presented so that students can spend their time preparing successfully--not "figuring out" with endless frustration and incorrect solutions. <br> <br> "Minuet in G" from the Bach notebook is a great example. Let's consider just the first page. Many (most) elementary students would love to play this piece. The RH by itself is easy. The LH is also "not difficult", but it's not self-evident, either. The notes are easy enough, and the fingering choices seem inconsequential. You could play it with several different fingering solutions.<br> <br> Hands Together: Humans can pay attention to only one thing at a time: in this case, the RH or the LH. Whichever hand is receiving the attention, the other must be on "automatic pilot". You can switch focus rapidly to give the appearance that you are paying attention to two things equally, but that is not what is happening. <br> <br> So... both hands need to be rehearsed (better word than "practiced") until the correct execution is the "default" behavior. <br> <br> If that (sufficient correct repetetition) has not happened, then consistent successful performance with both hands is never achieved. Students complain that they wish they could be more "consistent". They don't have a chance, sadly. <br> <br> "Practice Makes... "<br> <br> If you said "Perfect" then you've fallen into a sinister trap. <br> <br> "Practice makes Permanent." When a student actually does what has been assigned, in many cases that is the beginning of the end of their piano career. <br> <br> Here's the process in general:<br> Students "write in their own fingering" and then, and then practice (repeat) their incorrect solutions. They are unable to perform the desired piece consistently and don't know why. How long can a student tolerate this ineffective approach?<br> <br> That's something for us professionals to consider.<br> <br> <br> Perfect for introducing classical repertoire (similar to Suzuki, Bastien Piano Literature, etc). No note is presented without its corresponding proper fundamental technique (fingering). In other words, there is no such thing as a note separate from its hand position and fingering. <br> <br> The hand position notation is used to better communicate what exactly is being demanded of the student. Students’ repertoire is no longer limited by their music staff reading ability. Nor do they suffer from their own painful inability to solve technical issues. This approach restores “playing music on the piano” to primacy and supports “helping a student play music on the piano” as the central activity of the piano lesson. <br> <br> Weak students are able to play real (not simplified) music and not feel penalized. Strong students complete their preparation even more efficiently. In all cases, spending less time on fingering means more time for higher levels of musicianship: coordination, pedaling, physical technique, control, tone, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, expression, emotion, drama, compositional analysis, and historical context.<br> <br> Good luck!<br> Scott Camp<br> scottcampislandpiano@gmail.com
