The First Suite in Eâ™ for Military Band, Op. 28, No. 1, by the British composer Gustav Holst is considered one of the cornerstone masterworks in the concert band repertoire. Officially premiered in 1920 at the Royal Military School of Music, the manuscript was originally completed in 1909. Along with the subsequent Second Suite in F for Military Band, written in 1911 and premiered in 1922, the First Suite was the catalysing force that convinced many other prominent composers that serious music could be written specifically for the combination of woodwinds, percussion and brass. Â Works such as the English Folk Song Suite (1923) of Ralph Vaughan Williams and the William Byrd Suite (1923) of Gordon Jacob are leading examples. This is my arrangement of the second movement Intermezzo It is arranged for wind dectet/double wind quintet and bass.

Gustav Holst: Japanese Suite Op.33Mvt.I Ceremonial DanceArranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)2nd oboe plays cor anglaisClarinet parts are in AThe Japanese Suite was written at the request of the dancer Michio Ito, who was working in London in 1915.Most of the principal themes are traditional Japanese tunes, which Ito provided to Holst by whistling them.The lone exception is the “Dance of the Marionette,†which is original to Holst.Despite its origins, there is little that is “Japanese-sounding†about the resulting suite. Rather, Holst set these tunes in the same kinds of harmonies and textures that he was using in his other works, also taking the opportunity to experiment with other influences that were in the air at this time, an openness few of his British contemporaries shared. It is not known if the suite was ever used for Ito’s dance performances, but in September 1919 it did become the first of Holst’s works to be performed at a Promenade Concert, after which it received a handful of performances in the British provinces.The suite consists of six parts including a prelude and an interlude:Prelude: Song of the fishermanCeremonial dance (This arrangement)Dance of the marionettesInterlude: Song of the fishermanDance under the cherry treeFinale: Dance of the wolvesIt is unknown whether Ito did indeed use the music. St Paul's Suite (Op. 29, No. 2), originally titled Suite in C is a composition for string orchestra by the English composer Gustav Holst. It was written in 1912, but owing to revisions was not published until 1922. It is named after the St Paul's Girls' School in the United Kingdom, where Holst was Director of Music from 1905 to 1934. It was written in gratitude to the school, which had built a soundproof studio for him. This suite is the most famous of the many pieces he wrote for students at St. Paul's. A Somerset Rhapsody Op.21Arranged symphonic wind dectet/bass(Double wind quintet)NB Clarinets in A as in original orchestra (Parts in Bb also provided)Holst: A Somerset Rhapsody, Op. 21, was composed by Gustav HOLST in 1906, and was dedicated to Cecil Sharp, the renowned collector of English folksong music. It began as a work for orchestra called Folk Songs of Somerset, making use of 10 songs from the collections of Sharp. That work (on manuscript)was rediscovered in 2017 in New Zealand Holst reworked four of the tunes from that piece into the Rhapsody:The Sheep-Shearing Song (also known as It’s a Rosebud in June), invokes idyllic pastoral settings and is played at the beginning by the oboe d’amore (English Horn in the wind band version). High Germany, is a song about marching off to war, and is also used by Holst’s colleague, Ralph Vaughan Williams, in his own Folk Song Suite.True Love’s Farewell, is a song about lovers saying goodbye, and is sometimes also known as Ten Thousand Miles. The final tune used is The Cuckoo.Curiously, The Cuckoo does not seem to be recognised as one of the folk tunes used in this piece...the program note in the transcription refers only to the three other folk melodies, and many program notes omit any reference to The Cuckoo whatsoever.Though not a programmatic work, the composer once divulged to a colleague that the work told a story:Into a quiet country scene comes the sound of approaching soldiers. A youth who is courting a girl is persuaded to enlist and go to war. The soldiers march into the distance and the pastoral quietness returns. The girl is left alone.â€It works well for wind dectet.

The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements. The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733). Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. The complete set arranged wind dectet and bass Romanian Folk Dances Sz. 56, BB 68 is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, BB 76. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania became part of Romania in 1920. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartók rarely ever used key signatures. This set of dances consists of six movements and, according to the composer, it should take four minutes and three seconds to perform, but most professional pianists take up to five minutes. The list of the movements is as follows (with the original Hungarian title listed first, the most commonly known Romanian title second, and the English translation in parentheses): Bot tánc / Jocul cu bâtă (Stick Dance)The melody of the first movement, according to Bartók, came from the Mezőszabad (present-day Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (present-day Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Tordaadministrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it. Brâul (Sash Dance)The second movement is a typical dance from Romania called Brâul, for which traditionally a sash or a waistband was used. This melody came from Egres (present-day Igriș), in the Banat region. Topogó / Pe loc (In One Spot)The third dance comes also from Egres (Igriș), but its theme is much darker and its melody recreates Middle Eastern instruments, such as the flute.[4] Bucsumà tánc / Buciumeana (Dance from Bucsum)The fourth dance came from Bucsony, Alsó-Fehér County (today Bucium, Alba county in Romania) Román polka / Poarga Românească (Romanian Polka)The fifth dance is an old Romanian dance similar to the Polka and comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuş, in Bihor county), near the border between Hungary and Romania. Aprózó / Mărunțel (Fast Dance)The sixth and last dance is formed by two different melodies: the first one comes from Belényes (present-day Beiuș) and the second one comes from the then named Nyagra (present-day Neagra) village within the Palotailva (present-day Lunca Bradului) commune. Both on the orchestral version and on the original piano version, the final two dances are performed attacca-without a break between movements.

Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553634). Weihnachtsbaum (English: Christmas Tree; French: Arbre de Noel) is a suite of 12 pieces written by Franz Liszt in 1873–76, with revisions in 1881. The suite exists in versions for solo piano and piano four-hands. Weihnachtsbaum does not demand great virtuosity, and it has been described as a distant relation of Schumann’s Kinderszenen and Debussy’s Children’s Corner. It occupies an unusual place in Liszt’s output, and it may be for these reasons that it has received relatively little attention from performers. Liszt dedicated Weihnachtsbaum to his first grandchild Daniela von Bülow (1860-1940; daughter of Cosima and Hans von Bülow). Daniela had accompanied her grandfather to Rome due to his frail condition. The first performance was on Christmas Day 1881 in Daniela’s Rome hotel room. This was the day on which her mother Cosima always celebrated her birthday, although she was actually born on Christmas Eve.This is No 4. Lincolnshire Posy is a musical composition by Percy Grainger for concert band commissioned in 1937 by the American Bandmasters Association. Considered by John Bird, the author of Grainger's biography, to be his masterpiece, the 16-minute-long work has six movements, each adapted from folk songs that Grainger had collected on a 1905–1906 trip to Lincolnshire, England.In a similar fashion to these folk songs, many of the movements are in strophic form.This is my arrangement of No.VI. As the tempo is too fast for the conductor to gesture each beat of every measure, the movement is typically conducted in 1 where each gesture given by the conductor indicates a full measure instead of each beat. Every section of the ensemble states the theme at some point in the movement.This movement is based on the ballad of the same name,in which a lady, who while living with her uncle in a village is kidnapped by three Roma. After being missing for a long time, the villagers begin to speculate that the uncle is responsible for her disappearance, later imprisoning him and condemning him to death. At some point, the lady was found in Dublin by a young squire who loved her and was subsequently brought back to the village. Upon return to the village, the villagers, mere moments away from executing the uncle at the gallows, realized their error and set the uncle free, celebrating the lady's return with church bells (which are emulated by the tubular bells in the closing of the movement), music, and frivolity.As this movement was not yet completed at the time of the work's premiere, it was omitted for the performance.For Info:Green Bushes is an English folk song  which is featured in the second movement of Vaughan Williams's English Folk Song Suite, in Percy Grainger's Green Bushes (Passacaglia on an English Folksong), and in George Butterworth's The Banks of Green Willow. The melody is very similar to that of the Lost Lady Found movement.
