A fantastic work for more advanced bands, 'Short Piece' was originally composed by Julie Perry for chamber orchestra in 1952 and then expanded for full forces. The African-American composer and conductor was born in Kentucky, studying at Westminster Choir College and then Juilliard; she also worked with Nadia Boulanger, winning the Boulanger Grand Prix for her Viola Sonata. Her work includes a dozen symphonies and a pair of piano concertos; also three operas and a ballet. In the words of John Henken, this piece is 'an initially raucous, highly energised essay...There are edgy lyrical contrasts, and the work closes in a haunted Lento, before a whiplash ending returns the aggressive opening thunder.' Teatro do Incêndio. Emblematic work by Fauzi Arap (1938-2013), written over 40 years ago, had its only staging in 1976. The play portrays the implosion of a theater group after its members crossed all boundaries between art and life. I wrote this soundtrack totally immersed in the work of Canadian cellist Julia Kent and in the essays that accompany the creation of each scene. The grandeur of Fauzi's text required a soundtrack that gave the audience the feeling of participating in the story, and various instrumentations were used. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements. Composed in 1943, about 10 years before her death, 'The Oak' is an unpublished tone poem, perhaps more appropriately described as an 'orchestral essay', quite serious in tone and character. The foreboding opening slowly grows as more instruments enter the mix. The piece explores a number of different moods and atmospheres, from mysterious to more aggressive and irritated. Arranged for symphonic wind ensemble, 'The Oak' is a major contribution to the repertoire and deserves detailed attention - there are two different endings, the second, one that resolves quietly, is written in the score as 'the composer's preference'.

Arranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg.It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century.The movements of the suite are:Praeludium (Allegro vivace)Sarabande (Andante)Gavotte (Allegretto)Air (Andante religioso)Rigaudon (Allegro con brio)The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.Although it is not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit. I have reduced the tempi in both the prelude and rigaudon. This makes it more playable as a wind player, but still maintains the musicality of the piece.The prelude is quite a long blow for a wind player, and is quite a challenge.

His son had already taken several violin lessons and now wanted to try to play the viola in order to join a youth orchestra. As a consequence, 'Impromptu' is easy to play, and its Romantic harmonies in the equally easy piano accompaniment make the piece a well sounding duo that can even be performed by beginners. The Austrian composer and musicologist Hans Gál (1890-1987) composed operas, orchestral works, concertos, vocal music and, especially in the last decades of his life, numerous chamber music works. In addition, he published books (Brahms, Schubert, Verdi) and essays. When Gál was forced to leave Germany in 1933, he first moved to Vienna and finally settled in Edinburgh where he composed and taught at the university until his death.

This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

The Vancouver Guitar Orchestra asked me to write a piece describing something typically Canadian.The first thing that came to mind was listening to the wonderful call of a loon while sitting around a bonfire; a clear sky evening, on the shore line of a Canadian lake.I tried to imitate a crackling bonfire with a triangle, and the calls of loon conversation, at the beginning and end of the piece. The mid section should show a pleasant atmosphere of simply observing and enjoying the evening in a peaceful manner. A very special thanks to Anna Pietrzak for her inspiration and support for this project.L’Orchestre de guitares de Vancouver m’a demandé d’écrire une pièce décrivant quelque chose de typiquement canadien.La première chose qui m’est venue à l’esprit a été d’écouter le magnifique appel d’un huard en étant assis autour d’un feu de camp, sous un ciel clair, au bord d’un lac canadien.J’ai essayé d’imiter un feu de camp crépitant avec un triangle, et les appels des huards, au début et à la fin de la pièce. La section centrale devrait évoquer une atmosphère agréable où l’on observe simplement et apprécie la soirée paisiblement. Un grand merci à Anna Pietrzak pour son inspiration et son soutien dans ce projet.
