Etch was completed shortly after finishing work on the String Quartet No. 1 Apophis. This solo piece for violin (or viola) borrows material from the quartet and further develops it. Another interest in writing this piece was to create more compositions for solo instrumentalists. The title Etch refers to the sound of the opening motive of a ninth using the open G string of the violin (or the open C of the viola).

This composition is a premiere, speculative, yet as faithful as possible embodiment of all of Beethoven’s sketches for his String Quintet in C major, Hess 41 (WoO 62), as they have been left by the composer. The usefulness and integrity of more or less hypothetical completions of sketches by great composers remains from case to case controversial. Due to the paucity of the sketches for the aim of attempting a true reconstruction, the present composition in no way falls within such category. It is obviously quite different from what Beethoven himself would have produced if he had lived more, also due to the fact that he usually transformed his preliminary sketches substantially during the compositional process. However, there are some of his frequent, subtle thematic relationships between the sketches for the Quintet movements, and probably some features in the sketches would have been kept in the completed composition. The four-movement design hypothesized by Martin Staehelin and others, as well as other retrospective or relaxed features in the sketches may be a result of a still early stage of the compositional process, or perhaps an indicator of a fourth, neoclassical creative period, together with Op. 135 and the new Finale for Op. 130.To generate a continuity draft of the Quintet, all of Beethoven’s sketches for it were used, with the addition of several ones from the same context within the respective sketchbook and which could be related to the identified Quintet sketches: some sketches are clearly labeled as being for the Quintet, while others are thematically related or written down close to them. With the possible exception of bars 75-94 and 136-155 in movement II (which are variations on the theme) and bars 140-145 in movement IV (which fill in the blank bars in the sketch with a progression based on it), virtually every bar of this composition includes the notes from the sketches in at least one of the instruments. Some of those notes were subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal design, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and duration in the sketches.This publication includes the score, parts and continuity draft, the latter being marked with the sources in the sketches for each passage.Total duration: 33 minutes. Throughout his career, Beethoven made dozens of concept sketches for many movements of symphonies, besides those for the completed nine compositions of that genre. In the period 1812-1816, mainly during the composition of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, there were three recurring such projected works in his sketchbooks, namely in D minor, E minor and E flat major respectively, and remarkably with sketches for more than one of their movements. The present symphony in late Classical style is based on those projects, making use of all their themes in a „combined†symphony in D minor and thus with peculiar tonal relationships. The incentive for this new work in the Classical idiom was in the quality and potential of some of the sketches, especially the one included now in the main theme of the slow movement. Some of the sketched material was subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal outlook, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and durations. This publication includes the score and parts. The sketchbook sources for each passage are mentioned at the bottom of the score. Total duration: 36 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1089752). This is the complete set of Sketches I-VII, that each elaborate upon ideas previously left dormant in sketch form. The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. September Sunlight 2. Thamesnight 3. Kaleidoscope – Matinée Musicale These three piano pieces date from the autumn of 1981. The titles refer to actual events of that time; number 1, a sunset on the North Downs in Kent, number 2 a rain-interrupted firework display on the South Bank, where the Thames theme, similar to Smetana’s Vltava theme, is transformed into a half-stated opening of Brahms’s 4th symphony in the quiet G major coda. Number 3 was written after a matinee performance of Richard Rodney Bennett’s Isadora. The kaleidoscope is a satirical treatment of Bennett’s dance pastiches, especially the tango. Commissioned by the Fort Smith Symphony - John Jeter, Conductor John Trumbull (June 6, 1756 - November 10, 1843) is perhaps the most overlooked of the Founding Fathers of The United States. Born and raised in Connecticut, John Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull (October 12, 1710 - August 17, 1785), Governor of Connecticut from 1769 to 1784, the only Royal Governor to side with the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Trumbull fought in the revolution, witnessing Bunker Hill and using his artistic abilities to sketch the British Works at Boston. Later, he was appointed second personal aide to General Washington, and in June 1776 he served as deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates. Trumbull resigned from the army in 1777 over a dispute about the dating of his commission. In 1780 Trumbull traveled to London to study under Benjamin West: It was West who urged Trumbull to paint small pictures of the War of Independence, the works which would make him famous (he painted around 250 during his lifetime). In September of 1780, Continental troops captured British agent Major John Andre, after news of this reached Great Britain, Trumbull was arrested in retaliation. He was imprisoned for seven months. After the War, Trumbull again traveled to London, and then to Paris. It was here that Trumbull began work on two of the works depicted in this piece. He made sketches for the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis and, with the help of Thomas Jefferson, the US minister to France, he began working on The Declaration of Independence. In addition to paintings depicting the revolution, Trumbull painted numerous portraits, including those of George Washington, George Clinton (Governor of New York), Alexander Hamilton (the source of the $10 bill), and John Adams. I was tasked with composing a piece which would be educational for the students in attendance. I ended up writing a piece that would have educational material both in its musical construction and its subject matter. Trumbull's use of color, especially darker hues, and the structure of his paintings informed the construction of the piece. Three specific paintings influenced the work: The Capture of the Hessisans at the Battle of Trenton, The Declaration of Independence, and The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis. A recurring theme in the work of Trumbull is how the central act is always depicted at the center, with opposing groups on either side. The piece derives its form from this trait, casting the two large battle sections on the outsides, with the central act of the Revolutionary War in the center (The Declaration of Independence). The only percussion in the piece are drums, lending a certain militaristic feeling to the work, and evoking images of marching armies. Extended techniques are used repeatedly, casting a shade of uncertainty around the military campaigns (Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware and the seige at Yorktown), while The Declaration of Independence is scored in strict time and with more traditional harmonies, solidifying the event as the central moment of American history.

Gretchen am Spinnrade (D. 118, Op. 2) is one of Schubert’s first, most successful, and most widely recognized accomplishments in the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, but the breadth and compositional maturity of this 1814 example are an early indication of his gift for the form. The text is a strophic poem taken from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Faust, depicting a scene in which Gretchen, sitting at the spinning wheel (spinnrade), daydreams about Faust, a man with whom she is infatuated though she has only just met him and barely knows him. Schubert employs the first stanza as a refrain, repeating the text (“My peace is gone/My heart is heavy/I will never again find themâ€) to heighten the dramatic intensity as Gretchen becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her feelings. The piano accompaniment, with its relentless sixteenth notes in the right hand, depicts both Gretchen’s accumulating madness and the perpetual motion of the spinning wheel. Sixty-five measures pass before the pattern breaks, when Gretchen is so overcome by her emotions that she stops spinning while imagining Faust’s kiss. It then takes three tries to get the spinnrade turning again, which we hear in measures 69-71 before the spinning figure resumes in measure 72 to accompany Gretchen’s doleful refrain. This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 00140699.

He wrote his setting of Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), derived from Goethe's Faust, when he was 17 years old. Originally for voice and piano, Gretchen provides a first-person account of the feelings of its titular character as she works at her spinning wheel while reflecting on her conflicted emotions regarding Faust. The constant motion in the accompaniment part, echoing the tireless spinning of the wheel and the regular fall of her foot on the pedal, churns over a swiftly changing series of harmonies, representing both how swept away she is by her feelings for Faust but also her pain of not being able to be with him. The wheel's only pause comes when Gretchen reflects on Faust's kiss; it is the only moment in the song where she completely forgets her task at hand, so wrapped up is she in her tumultuous thoughts. As the musical patterns of the spinning wheel slowly but insistently return, Gretchen's composure is regained, and she returns to her task. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the spinning wheel pattern across all four parts, and Gretchen's lyrical melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.
