I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan.About The Devil's EtudeI composed this etude for piano solo in October 2019. I was inspired by a few piano master pieces. They are mainly Robert Schumann’s Toccata in C, Op. 7, Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes no. 5 (Feux Follets) and also Ligeti’s L'Escalier du diable. I also quoted the Gregorian chant Dies Irae and varied it in the middle section of this piece. ** There is an error in the metronome marking in the second section. It should be Allegretto (1 quaver beat= 70) and NOT (1 crotchet beat = 70).The Devil's Etude is dedicated to my friend Chan Shu Hui.

The ninth and final entry in my series of Chopin-like etudes, using the keys he omitted in his own etudes. Actually, I must confess. Whereas the first 8 etudes do indeed mimic Chopin's style, for this final etude I couldn't help it: my own style, vaguely tonal but filled with crushing dissonances, dominates this piece. It is longer and more difficult than its predecessors, a juggernaut of sonorities that hurtles the poor pianist to total destruction. Not for the squeamish!

These are “picture pieces,” intended to be studies in musical composition focused on a variety of themes. Each etude explores a distinct scene left to the listener’s interpretation. Op. 33 No. 4, Moderato – This march begins and ends with an open fifth echo-like motif. As the movement progresses, it gains more textural and harmonic complexity. Op. 39 No. 8, Allegro Moderato – This lyrical piece has long legato melodies, requiring precision and agility from the performer. Op. 39 No. 4, Allegro Assai – Filled with harmonic color and interweaved motives, this gavotte is pointed and energetic. Op 39 No. 7, Lento Lugubre – Slow and laborious, the funeral march is dense with emotion, ending with a glorious bell-like theme. Étude Op. 25, No. 1 in A♠major is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1836, and published in 1837. Its romanticized names are Aeolian Harp, for Schumann's description of it, and The Shepherd Boy, for Chopin's advice to a pupil to picture a shepherd boy refuging in a grotto to avoid a storm playing the melody on his flute. This work consists entirely of rapid arpeggios and harmonic modulations based on A♠major.

Guitar Sonata No. 5 in G major is open G tuning. It is in three movements and performance time is abut 10 to 10:15. Movements 1 and 3 are to be played using a glass or bronze slide worn on the fourth finger. The movements are:1. Hobo Spider Blues2. Ragged) and Sor(e) (after Sor's Op. 29, 10)3. Ricardo de YakimaThe first movement is a set of bottleneck technique variations on an original blues theme. Each variation explores different timbrel possibilities such as ordinary tone, pizzicato, sul tasto, and ponticello before recapitulating the original form of the blues theme.The second movement reconceives Sor's study in E flat from his Op. 29 as a ragtime sonata form, with a developmental intrusion from another Sor etude. This ragtime sonata leads attaca into the final movement.The third movement is another set of variations, this time on a two-step dance theme cast in the form of a menuet. It was common in early 19th century guitar sonatas to end with a menuet and so I opted to end with a menuet with variations. In sharp contrast to my first guitar sonata, which drew inspiration from late Beethoven piano sonatas and late Shostakovich string quartets, the inspirations here were Muddy Waters, Fernando Sor, Scott Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Don Helms.This sonata was also recorded by Daniel Estrem on Estrem Plays Lawson, which was released through Magnatune in 2016. .

Each movement explores different aspects of Chopin’s Etude – the first in a lively dance, the second in a gentle melody, and the finale in a rush of energy that brings the work to an exciting close. Each instrument is featured at least once which makes the Suite ideal for the developing ensemble. I owe many thanks to Dr. Thomas McCauley and his bands at Montclair State University and Windhaven in 2017 for reading the work through various stages of development and for their helpful feedback.

This piece is a common concert closer, for Kissin, Lang Lang, Lisitsa and others. Try it on for size, and then gradually increase the pace, as the notes in this forsaken key become a bit less thorny.
