The first section introduces each chromatic pitch from Eb6 to C7 (the highest possible pitch on a standard F alto recorder) in a pedagogically appropriate fashion. Each etude should be practiced slowly at first, focusing on correct fingering, phrasing and articulation prior to attaining full tempo. All of these etudes are purposefully composed using a variety of rhythmic and harmonic materials. On some of the fingering charts, ‘bell’ is included underneath the fingering. This indicates that the bell is to be closed either by pushing it up against the leg or the use of a bell key. Throughout the musical examples this is also reminded to the student by the usage of the ‘+’ sign.The second and third sections take students through recommended exercises in octaves, fifths, and major/minor scales. The goal here is to practice clean and swift transitions between notes, especially when in distant registers.The last section comprises two page-long ‘Grand Etudes’, which each reinforce and combine material from earlier in this book. Each one is about a minute long and uses the entire range of the instrument. When practicing these, be sure to attempt to keep the sound of the recorder consistent across both low and high registers.

The whole step and the major third are quite euphonious, and even fit into some keys where their usage in a tonal setting facilitates mirror fingerings and symmetry. E major, having four sharps, is just such a key. The scalar passages are strictly mirror-fingered. The octave displacement of the note in between the root and 3rd of the scale is also used throughout, in either hand. Tempo here is only a suggestion, as it may be a bit quick, the 9ths that change direction throughout being the chief technical challenge. The melody is, by default, the top notes of these octave-displaced figures. There are also thirds with broken octaves for accompaniment as well. Running time is approx.3 mins, 30 secs.,longer at a slightly slower pace. Pedaling is not specifically marked, but is given with general instructions rather than with traditional markings. MBB.

Etude 2.0 uses the major third as its component interval. Major 7th and augmented arpeggios predominate. Some are slow and graceful, others fast and turbulent, changing octaves with each iteration. Still others are pointillistically distributed between the hands. Octaves with major thirds attached to the outer ranges take mirrored, topographically identical structures, and explore the lowest and highest registers at the conclusion. Approx. running time is 3 mins 30 secs. More etudes to follow, til the set of 25 is complete. Once the single interval pieces have been posted, the combination pieces begin. All the possible groups of two have been utilized. Then the groups of three, and finally, the final etude uses all the intervallic elements in turn in one piece. MBB.

The minor third offers lots of opportunities for mirroring, in contrary motion. The half-step in this piece is treated not so much as a component interval as the distance between the two minor thirds being used at any one time. Lots of crunchies that you would not expect to have much euphony have a pleasant snap, like a fresh salad or a crisp! Diminished chords and minor seventh chords are turned upside down, and combined in unusual ways throughout. There is even a major-minor section in the middle. Half-steps often take the form of major sevenths, even sometimes displaced by two octaves. Approx running time is 2 mins 30 secs, less a a slightly slower pace. Worth doing at less than the suggested tempo, as the colors still come through. MBB.

The title describes the pieces as very compressedmusic ideas, or even impressions. They can be musically developed and expandedin mind. Even extended interpretations are conceivable, both in playing and interms of instrumental arrangement.
Waltz No. 1
This Piano Sonata in G major has a light, liltingmelody and a midsection that underscores the style of a waltz. It is a verylively and dynamic piece. The mood is enhanced by a few diffuse moments, whichsupports the arc of suspense.
Impromptu
Based on Franz Schubert, this impromptu is inspired bythe trio of the fourth part of Opus 90 from 1827. The style has been expandedand reinterpreted with modern elements. The theme increases to the upperoctaves and culminates in a new theme in the midsection. It ends with a solemnmood.
Summer
Originally it is the theme of my first symphony forchorus and orchestra, third Movement. In this arrangement for piano, it is themelody that is intensively underlined and expressed.
2nd Intermezzo
In the beginning this piece is like a nocturne byFrederic Chopin, But the midsection is based on the midsection of the secondintermezzo, opus 118 by Johannes Brahms from 1893. Mood, harmony and style ofthe midsection are also inspired by the soundtrack from "PearlHarbor" by Hans Zimmer.
