This famous Bible text, To everything there is a season, is set to an unusual harmony. Most chords, except for cadences, are built in perfect 4ths or 5ths. My church choir loved it when I played it, but found it was not that easy to learn because of the quartal harmonies. However, when it is learned, it is a favorite because of its unique quality. Sopranos go up to an A, and basses have one low Eb, so this is not for an amateur choir. Samuel Adler, my favorite composition teacher, used this piece with his Temple Emanuel choir. .

The trombones can walk out in front of the concert band to perform, while your other band members rest their chops...it breaks things up nicely.This can also be done as a quartet, without the solo part. I encourage you to feature soloist(s) however, when possible.You can assign more than one to a part on everything except the improvised jazz solo segments with chord changes. My kids love Deck the Halls, and this duet was written for one of my sons when he had taken a few months of lessons, and he wanted something fun to play for Christmas. The top part is a basic octave pattern and uses the regular melody for everything except the ending. The bottom part is built on C-major scales and Hanon-syle technique figures. For the ending, the top part player descends the keyboard (and slides down the bench) while the bottom part gets up and moves to the top of the bench. It's simple to learn and a lot of fun to play!

German.Commissioned by the Camerata vocale Limburg, this piece uses a sacred text from 'Ecclesiastes' in the version of the Zurich Bible of 1931. The text is made up of four different parts and set to music with different musical means. The first movement Wind has been composed for two three-part male-voice choirs. The music closely follows the natural declamation of the text, often in the form of a canon between the two choirs and the different voices. The second movement Licht is written for four parts. The light is presented in a slow tempo (poco rubato), often in high falsetto registers. Except for a forte outburst when darkness comes, the sound is very soft and gentle. The third movement is called Jugend and shall be performed by a young, enthusiastic and carefree tenor soloist. The text is based on many dactyls which gives the rhythm a youthful freshness. The fourth movement Alter tells how age progresses until the end. This is presented musically by a six-part canon which begins deep and soft and eventually culminates in high registers and a fortissimo. The work fades in a hardly audible pianissimo with the words of the preacher 'How everything is null and void! Everything is in vain!' (Robert Sund). Duration: 10 minutes.

All the verses, choruses and breaks are present except the fade out, which is replaced by a defined end to the piece (so the audience knows when to applaud!)This arrangement sits somewhere between intermediate and advanced intermediate, with each of the parts having music in more than one voice from time to time to make a fuller sound.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Peter Cetera. I've changed the key slightly so the music fits the guitar neck better and the modulation in the reprise is in a familiar key for the players.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. I always thought that the story had great potential to write a little opera buffa, and when I came across it by chance while tidying up a bookshelf, the idea came back to me and this time I finally decided to make it a reality. I have used only a few sentences from Twain's book and arranged them in such a way as to produce a workable libretto. For the most part, I've kept everything intact, except for a few words that I've taken the liberty of contract (for example, it's instead of it is; that's instead of that is). Also, in Eve's last entry, I changed every wife to everyone, as I want her words to refer to all human beings and not just women.

My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music, but most importantly, that it actually makes pianistic sense. Sometimes I even hide exercises in the arrangements that I want a student to work on. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so the results will always vary.This arrangement was made for a late intermediate student, Moderately Difficult III, working on Level 5 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. Timing is everything on this piece. I recommend experimenting with the pedal to bring a little more fun and contrast. In other words, less pedal throughout the performance except for adding color and texture. My student chose this piece on a whim for our Halloween event, but as soon as he started learning it, he became addicted and couldn't stop practicing it until he had it down! It really is super fun to play!Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

This arrangement came about because I was disgruntled at how NOT-ragtime (for lack of better words) most piano solo versions of this song were. I eventually got sick of this and wrote this arrangement. I also added the key change because of one recording I heard of Billy Joel playing this piece, except he played it really slow, and then sped up the recording before posting it, but in doing so, the whole song went up a half step. I liked how it sounded in that key, so I implemented it halfway through this arrangement. It does make the 2nd half quite a bit harder, but as they say, you can't have everything in life.Other than that, I hope you enjoy this song. It's a lot of fun.

Everything is written in a very conservative register except for the viola which is required to play in the second position, and the cello which is required to play briefly in the third position. This chorale would be an excellent warm-up exercise, or could be performed as part of a concert. Special care should be taken with the many moving lines contained within the composition. This beautiful Dylan song has it all: heartbreaking lyrics, moving harmonies and a beautiful melody. Because it would be a pity for guitarists not to be able to play Adele's piano version I decided to make a transcription. The score only has the guitar part but you won't have a hard time singing the lyrics on top. Or even better: ask a singer to sing the melody. I can ensure you that the audience will leave in tears. Everything on the score is as in Adeles version except for a small guitar solo I added instead of Adeles piano solo. Don't hesitate to do your own thing in this passage, it is only there as a suggestion. I have put double bar-lines at every section and added chord symbols at the first A and the first B. This way it will be easier for you to grasp the structure of the song. Enjoy!

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534402). Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) composed two string quartets. The Premier Quatuor à cordes was composed in 1925 during Leguerneyâ??s private piano and composition study with French pianist Thérèse Cahen. His second quartet, subject of this publication by Musik Fabrik, was written between November 1947 and September 1948. The four movements are: I. Allegro moderato; II. Intermezzo; III. Scherzando; IV. Presto-Andantino. This work was, in part, Leguerneyâ??s response to the Premier Quatuor à cordes (inédit) by his colleague, Henri Sauguet. Leguerney stated in a personal interview with Patrick Choukroun (18 May 1989) that: â??I wrote it a bit in opposition to Sauguetâ??s Premier Quatuor. It seemed to me that his quartet was without interest: just scratchings! I wanted to express my way of looking at it from the classical viewpoint of the past: it is almost in the spirit of Mozart, except for the harmonic language, of course. In fact, I wanted to fight against everything that has been done to a quartet since Beethovenâ??s last ones.â? The premiere of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur was by the Quatuor Pro Arte at the Abbaye de Royaumont. Before this performance, Poulenc sent Leguerney the following note: â??Fortunate man for whom twelve strings are enough to charm people, I wish you good luck and respectfully embrace you.â? (Handwritten letter, Reims, 4 September 1959). Leguerney was appointed artistic director of the Lumen recording company in 1951, and remained in this position until 1959. He produced four recordings of his music, including the Quatuor Pro Arteâ??s recording of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur (1947-1948) (Lumen, LD 2.440, 1958). This disc won the Grand Prix du Disque de lâ??Académie Charles Cros on 13 March 1959. The Pro Arteâ??s members were Suzanne Plazonich, Violin I; Chantal Beylier, Violin II; Nicole Gendreau, Viola; and Micheline Burtin, Cello. Francis Poulenc wrote to Leguerney concerning this recording: â??It is very good Leguerney. Of course, frivolous as I am and shall always remain, it is the 2nd movement that I prefer. Between us, I am like you: I prefer the scherzos after the andantes; that way one is not forced to write a Finale allegro. Yours pleases me very much, in fact, so to my ears it is III-IV-I-II, in the order of pleasure.â? (Manuscript letter, Bagnols, 14 October 1959) The radio station France I broadcast the Quatuor with on 11 July 1959 on the program Schola of the series Concert de musique contemporaine, again with the Quatuor Pro Arte. An archive recording of this broadcast exists on magnetic tape. Critic Claude Rostand wrote: â??Jacques Leguerney does not seem to have looked for special innovations either in form or language. His basic thought seems especially to have written a quartet, that is to say on one hand to have used the four voices with elegance and originality, clarity and homogeneity (four-part writing seems to always have come naturally to him, even at the piano), and on the other hand to exploit all of the supple cushioning that can result from the caress of a bow on a string.â? Critic Emile Vuillermoz wrote: â??His only ambition is to expresses clear and affectionate melodic ideas, in a highly distinguished, elegant and refined language, meaning an homage, in the beginning of our century, to the trios of the greatest stylists of our time. In fact, it is from the vocabulary of Fauré, Debussy and Ravel that he takes his grammar and syntax and that with which he carries out with his this harmonic writing that is both supple and sparse, that is so congenial to the association of four string instruments. This quartet, whose first movement is of a rare perfection, is a delicate enchantment.â? The Musik Fabrik edition of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur is taken from a photocopy of the composerâ??s manuscript of the full score. We also had access to the quartet parts found in Leg.

Of course, I had to select a medley of appropriate pieces, but somehow could not assemble compositions that were both short enough and very playable by my group. That left mewith the task of writing my own arrangement of military anthems.I pay tribute to the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. What is conspicuously missing, however, isthe United States Air Force Song. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it tobe a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.
