Movement I: “Family Vacations.†Fond memories of childhood vacations as well as leading out on road trips as a father, are reflected by the excitement of this movement. Feel free to reminisce on your own family trips as you listen to or perform this movement. Movement II: “Jovial Banter.†I was going to call this movement “Roughhousing,†but that is only part of what this playful piece conjures. Besides wrestling my five boys (with my one girl amusedly watching off to the side), friendly joking with friends about rival universities, and playing harmless pranks on friends and family, all seem to be rolled up into this truly jovial movement. It has its own tricks and surprises to one who has never heard it before. Movement III: “Holiday Foods.†This waltz displays more elegance and structure than most of the other movements. It primarily elicits memories of the distinctive Thrower Christmas feasts, for which we created a unique tradition. Our yuletide banquets hail from a different country every year. Through the decades, we have discovered and adopted many international favorites that we continue to enjoy! Note the middle section of the waltz gets a bit spicy… Movement IV: “Pets.†Though as an adult I have not had the pleasure of enjoying personal pets, my youngest son developed an affinity for YouTube videos about funny cats and dogs. Nevertheless, my favorite childhood pet was “Blackie,†the splendid satin feline featured on the cover of this work. Pets are often quirky and extremely fun, as is this music. If it doesn’t put a smile on the listener’s face, someone in the line of musical communication may have failed. Movement V: “Sharing God’s Wonders.†Slow and wondrous, the music in this movement yearns to be shared. The theme, though only somewhat related to the other variations, strays to its own content after the first motivic notes. The melody is borrowed from a 2010 band composition of mine titled “Tribute to Joel Robison,†an ancestor, and a Texas hero. One passion I have enjoyed through the years is family history, truly a God-given legacy from which I draw much inspiration. Movement VI: “Personal Triumphs.†Indeed a subject to celebrate, triumphs of self-mastery, conquests over difficult tasks, and achievements of monumental goals all prompt me to break out in triumphant fanfares!

It was written while Mr. Francis was a student in Montreal, and derives its thematic material from the well-known Quebec folk song V'la l'bon vent, a tune which is sung in a variety of forms in virtually every region of the province. Nick thinks that at the time he must have had in mind the magnificent brass fanfares of Montreal composer Jacques Hétu, for the title is certain to put one in mind of his Petite Fanfare pour Lanaudière. Here is two-and-a-half minutes of joyous music-making that oughtn't need any further excuses!

I was bemused by the sentimental farewell to the unthinkably horrible weapon, the Avro Vulcan deltawing nuclear bomber, which was operated by the Royal Air Force from 1956 to 1984, which flew over my York St John University Composition and Reflection class in October, 2015 and which was retired on 28th of that month. The four-minute warning was a public alert system conceived by the British Government during the Cold War and operational between 1953 and 1992. The name derived from the approximate length of time from the moment at which a Soviet nuclear missile attack against the United Kingdom could be confirmed and the impact of those missiles on their targets. 3 minutes would have been more realistic, and that is the length of this piece. Some terms related to the Cold War easily come to mind and are spoken during the piece. I used dissonant serial technique, but people enjoyed this lively fanfare when it was performed by the Orichalc Quintet

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1136166). “Joy to the World†is, perhaps, the most widely performed Christmas carol, having appeared in nearly 1800 different hymnals since its initial publication, according to hymnary.org.The text was written by the prolific English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748) as a paraphrase of Psalm 98 and published in his Psalms of David Imitated (1719) under the heading “The Messiah's Coming and Kingdom.†The paraphrase is a Christological interpretation of the psalm — i.e., an understanding of a passage of Old Testament scripture as pointing to the Christ of the New Testament.As hymn texts and tunes were often printed separately, Watts indicated that “Joy to the World†should be sung to any Common Meter (CM) tune — a poetic meter consisting of four lines that alternate between iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with each foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Consider the CM tunes, “Amazing Grace†and “O Little Town of Bethlehem,†for example — both very different from the tune commonly associated with Watts’ text today.That tune was written, or at least arranged, by the American hymn-writer and music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) and published in The National Psalmist (Boston, 1848). Sheba, the powerful Queen and her entourage travels to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to meet the wise King Solomon. Tradition states that after Solomon correctly answered riddled that she asked, a romance developed. From this encounter Sheba bore Solomon's child, King Menelek, the founder of the Ethiopian empire. This arrangement of about 2 minutes in length, for Brass Quintet with optional timpani is for advanced performers. The 1st B-flat Trumpet part can be performed on Piccolo Trumpet or E-flat trumpet. The work has a joyous, regal and fanfare-like feel.

To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral). I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. The Fanfare is a six minute work for moderately advanced performers in the following instrumentation: 6 Trumpets in C, 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Timpani & Bass Drum. Here are the composer's words about the Fanfare. This music was commissioned for the inauguration of James W. Wagner, nineteenth president of Emory University. It was premiered on the quadrangle of the campusin Atlanta on April 2, 2004. Ars ex Spiritu - art from the spirit - plays on the Latin meaning of spiritus, the translation meaning a blowing of the wind. The music for brass and percussion is a festive and celebratory work meant to summon the joy of creating music together.
