Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881252). Han River Fantasy Suite is based on and inspired by Nash’s first trip to Vietnam in 2007. Commissioned by a percussion and horn duo, it is a five movement chamber concerto with mvts 1 and 2 performed continuously, as are mvts 4 and 5, giving the aural perception of 3 movements. Mvt. 1, Dawning and mvt. 2, Morning Power Walks stem from Nash’s morning routine during that particular journey as he walked along the Han River in Danang, Vietnam every morning. Mvt 1 is a slow and lyrical prelude, with vibraphone and chimes serving as melodic and colorful supporting lines for the horn solo and that immediately proceeds to Mvt. 2, a fast and somewhat fiery movement, alluding to a fast power walk. Mvt. 3. Moonlight Stroll is slow and lyrical, highlighted by bowed vibes and triangle being struck while placed on a timpani during a glissando in the middle section. Mvt. 4, Boat Ride is a fast and dance-like, composed in compound duple meter and transitions to mvt. 5, Going Home, in a slightly faster simple quadruple meter.

Alwyn uses the basic three-four waltz rhythm with a great variety of style, and much of the music has that of a romantic approach, although here and there are nods to the composer’s earlier neo-classical style. The idea for the Fantasy Waltzes originated while Alwyn was on holiday in Norway after a visit to Grieg’s lakeside home. Although conceived as a continuous cycle, the suite does divide into two parts, Nos. 1-6 and Nos. 7-11, which encompass many moods from happy to sad, to mysterious and solemn, with the eighth waltz being one of the most attractive of the set. The Fantasy Waltzes are dedicated to the New Zealand pianist Richard Farrell, who gave the first performance of the work in a BBC broadcast on 2nd June 1957. Less than a year later, Farrell’s promising career as a concert pianist was cut tragically short after being killed in a car accident. Alwyn admired Farrell’s playing greatly and dedicated the fifth of his Twelve Preludes for piano to Farrell’s memory.

The next part is, now complete, Chim-Chim-Cheree, with the melody starting in the cello, and then passing by the rest of instruments from lower to higher. When the second plays the melody, the first plays a counter-theme a little bit tricky. And, in the end, now complete, Feed the Birds, with constant dialogs between the violins. Tested and approved arrangement. Bass part is optional. All Nonamé arrangements are prepared to avoid page turns if you print the covers properly. Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

The Etherea Suite, Volume 1 is for intermediate to advanced players who enjoy lyrical, exciting, and showy repertoire, while expressing their imagination through their playing. Players get to musically explore the mountains, the desert, volcanoes, time travel to ancient times, and fight in battle! Volume I of the suite represents three main characters from the sci-fi, fantasy book Trials of the Innermost (release date May 26, 2023). Each movement has a distinct feel and reflects each character's personality. This edition features performance notes written by the composer, including musical elements unique to each movement, fun facts, and personal influences JohnWillard had in mind when creating the work. A graphic of the musical cryptogram system used to make the melodies for each character is featured at the end of the notes. The three movements imitate a sonata, with the overall order of the suite is slow, slow, fast. Some teaching elements in the first movement I. Vayriel: Protector of the Mountains, include: scalar passages (A natural minor scale), shifting hands position, rolled chords, repeated left hand patterns, ornaments, and pedaling. II. Zinvar: Peacemaker of the Volcanic Rifts is more challenging, but has more room for musicality, expression, exploring different touches on the piano, and ethereal use of pedaling, like the sostenuto pedal (if you have one!) The movement opens with a mysterious, wave-like arpeggiated left hand pattern, similar to pieces of Chopin or Rachmaninoff. The B section is practice in using the sostenuto (middle) pedal while playing softly, imitating Gregorian Chant. Best of all the ending sounds harder than it actually is and you get to play as loud as possible! III. Idrilia: Warrior of the Desert is fast paced, rhythmic, and inspired by video games. Kittatinny Ridge Suite is composed of three movements: I. On the Delaware at Carpenter's Point, II. The Fields of Walpack at Dusk, and III. Yellow Frame's Harvest Home. The suite is a musical landscape of different points along the Kittatinny mountain ridge in western Sussex County, New Jersey. I. On the Delaware at Carpenter's Point explores a kayaking trip at the very northern point of New Jersey. From the river one can see the High Point monument, the highest point in the state, as one crosses under bridges, passes islands, and speeds through small rapids. II. The Fields of Walpack at Dusk paints the tiny, rural township of Walpack, with its quiet fields and forests. The central theme is In Babilone: an old Dutch melody, echoing the regions colonial-era settlers. III. Yellow Frame's Harvest Home is a fantasy on Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, illustrating the late summer community dinner, Harvest Home run by the Yellow Frame Presbyterian Church, of Fredon township. Other hymn tunes surface in the piece, including May the Lord Mighty God and St. Anne (the colonial-era psalm tune for O God our Help in Ages Past).

This suite consists of four movements, each depicting the drama found in the accompanying paintings. Dawn Attack features brief, churning motifs that propel the music forward. Egyptian Queen begins with an ancient horn call atop a jingling dance rhythm.Leaping Lizards (from 1989) consists of several monster movie cliches: Heavy angular brass motifs ending in a rising major seventh, screeching woodwinds, and frequent chromatic lines and augmented arpeggios. The Silver Warrior is monothematic in form, lending to its concise style. The music moves forward in hopeful resilience and ends as rousing as the icy mountain range that adorns the background of this scintillating painting.

There are, however, major differences: - the themes appear in chronological order (like in the opera) - there are no distinct movements, this is a 20-minute romp featuring tune after tune - most parts, especially repetitive songs, are abridged to varying degrees - where appropriate, sections seamlessly segue into the next- the major tunes (Les Toreadors, Gypsy Song, Toreador Song) allow for applause afterwards - the orchestration follows the original (double woodwinds, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, harp, timpani and 3 percussion, strings) with minimal changes to compensate for missing vocal lines Further cuts are possible and easy to make due to the clearly marked sections. This arrangement is meant to rival the orchestral suites in excitement and colours - but in a more organic/continuous format. It is ideal for any level orchestra (intermediate+) in any kind of setting.
