Fantasy for Trombone was written in 1981 as a Christmas present for Richard Raum while he and Elizabeth Raum were performing with the Regina Symphony. Ms. Raum is a highly respected Canadian composer with a catalog of outstanding compositions, many featuring brass instrument solos. Fantasy for Trombone and Brass Band was arranged by Dorothy Gates in 2007.
The beautiful performance is by UK Trombonist Nick Hudson.
Fantasy is dramatic, lyrical and very expressive, making it an ideal choice to feature your brass band's trombone soloist.
The work has gained immense popularity since its debut, having been performed and recorded by major artists worldwide. It is 6 1/2 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche.Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.

Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

An opening fanfare leads into a toe-tapping march, followed by a fugue reminiscent of Bach, a tuba recitative and solo, a recap of the march, and a majestic finale. The bass trombone part could be played on a tenor trombone, but both 2nd and 3rd trombone will need F attachments. In the sample recording the tuba part is performed by the composer on euphonium, so it might not sound quite like a tuba!

The tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet dates from before Shakespeare's 1597 dramatic play. Since then, the story has been adapted for opera, musicals, and film. In the late 1870's Tchaikovsky toyed with the idea of an opera. He completed a Fantasy Overture, and later on, sketched the Duet between the two lovers. A tragedy in itself, Tchaikovsky never finished his opera. Almost 100 years later, Franco Zeffirelli directed a film version where Giovanni Rota Rinaldi (Nino Rota) created the musical score in 1968. The most notable segment is the Love Theme sung by the troubadour during the masked ball where Romeo and Juliet first meet.This setting is based on the timeless innocence of Rinaldi's writing of the Love Theme and makes reference to the passionate duet of Tchaikovksy, with Juliet played by the Tenor Horn and Romeo by the Euphonium. My arrangement of the amazing Earth Wind & Fire song to try and get as close to the original as possible, using the instruments for my school band. It does sound different using saxophones but have included Trumpet & Trombone parts. It is transcribed with Rhythm section parts for those that find it difficult to read chords or improvise/comp. The intro has the runs written out but are no doubt produced in the studio. Sibelius sounds whilst good doesn't allow falls that start immediately but sounds close. The synth part written for a Nord with Brass falls and the String section works really well. The Clav part is on a Micro Korg which needed some programming but is effective. Arrangement is for sale on Sheet Music Direct and Sheet Music Plus. "Christmas Day" by Gustav Holst. Originally written for SATB choir and orchestra, I have arranged it for symphonic brass quintet of 2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. (If your trombonist can play euphonium, I think it would sound better!) It contains snippets of many Christmas Carols, cleverly interwoven together. It suits the brass quintet. (Also available for brass band (treble clef) quintet. Gene Wilder’s 1971 performance of this song in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory won the hearts of boys and girls dreaming of endless worlds of candy and fantasy. Gerhard Guter’s swinging jazz waltz rendition for big band with solo alto or bass vocalist breathes new life into this beloved tune. The introduction sets up a repeating harmonic pattern, which returns at various points during the arrangement, which gradually picks up steam and swing, unfolding in a lush cadence as the vocalist launches into the poignant lyric. Saxophone writing draws upon the usage of trills, across-the-barline quadruplets, and harmonized flourishes. Unison piano and (optional) vibraphone parts will bring to mind the musical code for entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Room. The orchestration benefits from a variety of dynamic shadings and the use of bucket mutes for the trombones and cup mutes for the trumpets. Dramatic moments are emphasized with mallets. Solo changes are provided for scat vocal, vibes, guitar, and piano. Vocal (alto or bass), Five saxes (2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari), eight brass, piano/bass/drums, and optional guitar and vibraphone. Top brass notes are C6 trumpet and A4 trombone. Demo produced, programmed, and performed by Gerhard Guter. Vocal performed by Aimee Nolte.

Test Drive is from the soundtrack to the 2010 computer-animated action fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon, based on the book by Cressida Cowell. It follows the story of Hiccup and Toothless as they form an unlikely friendship, against the backdrop of the Viking village of Berk, where the other villagers attempt to kill dragons when they attack.The music is composed by John Powell. Whilst this was his sixth collaboration with DreamWorks Animation, it was the first where he was the sole composer (having worked with other composers such as Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer prior to this). In an interview with The Wasp, Powell said that the directors wanted “size and depth and emotionâ€, wanting “a feeling of the Nordic musical past.†This led him to the music of Nielsen, Grieg and, in particular, Sibelius. “Sibelius was the key. I studied a lot of Sibelius as a kid, and I've always adored his music.†He continues, “we looked at all the folk music from the Nordic areas. And I'm part Scottish and grew up with a lot of Scottish folk music, so that came into it a lot. And Celtic music was something that Jeffrey [Katzenberg] felt had this very attractive quality to it, and a sweetness, that he thought would be wonderful for the film.Test Drive appears in the film when Hiccup first takes flight on Toothless. It perfectly brings together “Hiccup's Theme†and “Toothless' Themeâ€. The two themes take over from each other, representing the development of their onscreen relationship during this flight scene as Hiccup starts to trust Toothless, and vice versa. The soundtrack was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score and the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass.
