Difficulty: Intermediate (Grade 3)Appropriate for schools and students. ‘Charles McCreerys beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ - Samantha Gillogly, violinist Charles McCreery was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. While at Eton he won the Rowe Cup for junior pianists, and in his final year performed Weber's Konzertstück with a chamber orchestra. As an undergraduate he studied piano with Hilda Bor, and won a piano class, adjudicated by Herbert Howells, at the Willesden Music Festival. From 1988 to 1991 he held a Perrott Warrick Studentship from Trinity College, Cambridge, and he has a doctorate from Oxford University. From 1996 to 2000 he was a College Lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1996 Charles McCreery's 'Elegy for Violin and Piano' was shortlisted for the Match Composition Prize. A comment on Charles McCreery’s collection of Tolkien songs: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. Helping Hands is a march written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). It is dedicated to all the volunteers that make the Whit Friday March Contests possible, which is said to be the greatest free show on Earth. The piece is loosely programmatic in nature.The introduction is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands’ anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. There is the usual hustle and bustle before the second section sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day.The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. There is a small bridge that is reminiscent of previously used motifs and melodies before the hymn returns. Ahaunting french horn solo is followed by a dramatic trek utilising the whole orchestra to the end where the horn to round the piece off.Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' the history of which can be found here: https://www.britainexpress.co.uk/attr... Part 1 (0 - 2:24) It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 (2:26 -3:37) It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 (3:37 - 6:02) The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train (4:30) where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights (4:55). The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. (5:02) No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 (6:03 - 8:12) The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters (6:30). As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face (8:01) as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

String theory, which the CERN facility hopes to verify or disprove, presumes that matter itself is the manifestation of resonant vibrations, that the world itself is a universal harmony. This post-modern notion - which Kronos embodies with every performance - itself resonates with the ancient Hindu notion of om, the absolute manifest, which is the basis of Indonesian gamelan. We will bring these two ideas of resonance together by combining Kronos with a gamelan - even a virtual one.The behavior of subatomic particles is probabilistic, group-oriented: the motion of any one particle is unpredictable and unknowable: it's what the group does that counts. This could also be a description of the Balinese gamelan, where individual virtuosity is subsumed to interlocking patterns, composite melodies, the sound of the whole. This is also the spirit of Kronos.When Robert Moog developed his synthesizer in the 1960s, he modeled its functionality on the piano and on western music in general - a single person, sitting at a keyboard. This is one reason why it was popularized by Wendy Carlos' Swtiched On Bach. Gamelan Elek Trika takes a similar approach to the very distinctive musical practices of Indonesia. Like the great gamelans of Bali and Java, Gamelan Elek Trika works as a single unit, played by a complete ensemble. The instruments are played like a gamelan - metallophones, drums, and gongs, playing interlocking patterns - but all are channeled through a central 'brain', a single processing unit which controls their sound, tuning, and timbre. Bien allantDate de composition : 17 septembre 1945In 1945 Leguerney finished composition of the Fantaisie en sol mineur pour piano, written in three movements. He felt an â??extraordinary enthusiasmâ? for this piece, which he felt represented a departure from the current writing style for piano. He said in an interview with Patrick Choukroun in 1994 that â??I wanted to show that one could write lyrically for the piano. The piano music of Francis Poulenc lacked strength.â? The work was immediately performed in a private concert at the home of the Countess Jean de Polignac by the French pianist Monique Haas (1909-1987) in December 1945. The fact that she waschosen to perform Leguerneyâ??s Fantaisie is a key to the style of this work which Leguerney felt emulated the expressive force of Cesar Franckâ??s works. Haas was a distinguished concert artist, especially known for her performances of 20th century music, with which she toured worldwide. French pianists of her generation tried to avoid the excess of the â??romanticâ? school and strove for cleanness and precision with a warm tone color reflecting the influence of Alfred Cortot.Leguerney remembers that both Poulenc and Henri Sauguet were present at this private concert, but he noted that they did not comment about his piece. He felt it was obvious that his Fantaisie was â??far from the habitual level of piano musicâ? being composed at that time. These post-war years were Leguerneyâ??s most productive period. In addition to the Fantaisie, hecomposed the Sonatine pour violin et piano, the Quatuor à cordes, and many fine songs including the cycle Sept Poèmes de François Maynard. The 1940s finished with the composition of his first ballet, Endymion. The first public performance of the Fantaisie was given by Stéphane Petit-Jean in the Cloître Saint-Sauveur at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence on July 28, 1988 during a recital for Radio France that included songs of Leguerney interpreted by Nathalie Stutzmann. The concert was laterbroadcast as Une heure avec . . . Jacques Leguerney and also included the song cycles Sept Poèmes de François Maynard, La Nuit and Le Carnaval.The work is dedicated to Jean Fonda, the stage name of Jean-Pierre Fournier. He was the son of the famed French cellist Pierre Fournier. Before the performance at Aix-en-Provence, Leguerney showed the score of the Fantaisie to Fonda, who encouraged him to have it performed. It is possible that the dedication was made at this time.
