I was inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence to write a piece of music that embodies some of its mathematical principles as well as the deep feeling of the heart. â¤ï¸ We see the Fibonacci Sequence every single day... it’s found all over nature. If you aren’t familiar with it, the Fibonacci Sequence is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two that preceded it. So: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on. In nature, the Fibonacci Sequence ratio is seen in flower petals, seed heads, pinecones, pineapples, cauliflower, tree branches, shells, spiral galaxies and more. It is closely related to the Golden Ration of 1.618, another magical number that is visible around creation and has guided artists, composers, architects, etc.Using the time signature of 3/4, a chord progression of 8 chords, moving down by 5ths, etc. the mathematical elements and form of this beautiful sequence is embedded in the music. I hope that you sense that Love is embedded in this song, as well. I hope you enjoy playing this piece! Play it with expression and grace. ðŸ™ðŸ»ðŸ˜Šâ¤ï¸.

Fibonacci was composed for my friend and colleague Huw Evans to celebrate his leaving Preston Manor School after 22 years. As the mathematicians and scientists will know the Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers in which every number after the first two is the sum of the two preceding ones. The phrase structure of the piece is loosely based on the first eight numbers in the sequence. So why maths for a musician? Well, in its own way it’s stylish, elegant and there's certainly a plan there!

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767421). Titans: This is a piece inspired by the mythological Titans, who were deposed by the Greek God Zeus, who exiled them and founded the Olympian tradition. The titans were created by the mating of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (the Earth). Gaea and Uranus were themselves created from Chaos (the Void). There were many Titans. Cronus, often mistaken for the god of time, was their leader, their brother and the father of their children. Cronus mated with his sister Rhea to produce the gods Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Cronus was given a prophecy that he would be deposed by his children, so he forced Rhea to give her children to him when they were born whereupon he ate them. She managed to deceive him and hid Zeus, the youngest male child, away. Zeus eventually freed his siblings, by making Cronus vomit to bring them back to the world and thus he became the oldest. The other gods were persuaded to make Zeus their leader and together they deposed Cronus and defeated the Titans in a war (the Titanomachy) that lasted for many years. Zeus and the other gods were not able to kill Cronus, so he exiled him and all of the other Titans in a place called Tartarus, which was part of the underworld, where Cronus would have no access to power of any kind. The music is based mostly on the opening chords, which recur again and again, representing Tartarus and also Cronus and all of his children in one form or another. Melodic material throughout is shaped by the chords and their progressions and I have applied simple transformations – for example, in the last section I have shaped the motifs by applying a snippet of a Fibonacci sequence and overlaying the result in different parts like a canon. I decided to use this because the Fibonacci sequence is representative of nature and the growth of life so it links to Gaea, who represents the creative force. Obviously, Cronus, Gaea, Chaos, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and Tartarus are all represented here, but so too are Oceanus, Phoebe, Mnemosyne and The Titanomachy (The war of the Olympians against the Titans). The piece finishes with a reprise of the opening chords, which have transformed into a less bleak soundscape, with Cronus and the other Titans safely locked away in Tartarus.This is a difficult and challenging piece demanding a high level of skill from all players. it uses a number of dramatic effects and will stretch any ensemble.I am looking into making a version of this piece for Brass Quintet.Watch te score playing here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w7dUmJh5k4

Kaleidoscope (2007) commissioned by David Wright, was written while my wife and I were in residence at the David and Julia White Artists Colony, Costa Rica. The tropical location was stunning but , other than permitting luxurious amounts of time to work things out. it was not a direct source of inspiration for the work. Kaleidoscope employs the Fibonacci sequence (1+1+2+3+5+8…) to control surface rhythm and large sectional proportions. Though I am often explicitly concerned with proportion and its integration at various levels of most pieces I compose; I had never used Fib. because it seemed too easy, and I typically do not like to use processes that are external to a piece. None-the-less I really enjoyed working with the sequence and was pleasantly surprised when the last pitch in the saxophone, with a duration of 89 sixteenth notes, sounded just right.The work is suitable for advanced performers and is 13:00 minutes in duration. This shape recurs throughout, perhaps suggesting fractals. The first LH note is G. The first cadence is Ab. After the repeat the 2nd cadence is F#. Meas. 40 reaches G minor. Notice m. 45 Ab, m. 48 Gb, m. 53 G. Also In meas. 70-72 the lowest bass notes are D Eb D C# D. The repeat must be observed in order to match the Fibonacci sequence.

In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Weak ForcesIt is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.IntroducciónIt is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.First section & cadenzaIn this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. The author's intent was to work on melodic-harmonic-rhythmic materials always attributable to the Fibonacci numerical series, hence, as a consequence, the choice of the title, Nautilus, finding the natural expression in the artistic perfection of said shell of the logarithmic spiral to which the golden section is applied.The form of symphonic movement that emerged has a rhapsodic flowThe choice of the sounds of the harmonic field of the first part (bar 0-50) is therefore based on the numerical series (based on a scale of 10 sounds), tracing each sound of the scale to a number from 0 to 9 and making them correspond to the numbers of the series of Fibonacci from 1 to 267,914,296.The second part (bars 51-64) is based on a harmonic field of 9 sounds which, when superimposed, generate 9 triads formed by superimposed 4ths which are used at a distance of 2, 3 or 5 beats (series of F. , from the 3rd to the 6th number). In this section, isorhythmy is used according to groupings of values ​​that can be numerically traced back to the series.A short third part (bars 65-80) is inserted as an expressive moment: it is based on a scale of 7 sounds (spaced proportionally from each other according to the logarithmic spiral: from the 1/4 tone to the major 3rd).In the next and final section the isorhythmic part is resumed with small changes in the closing coda.
