To every young musician, the first concert is a special experience. The choice of the 'right' performance piece is of vital importance: It should be technically and musically manageable, make a strong impression and give great pleasure in practising.
The edition .My First Concert .contains easy pieces for trumpet in B flat and piano for music lessons and first auditions. The selection of the works invites the performer on a trip through various music epochs - starting from 16th-century music via Baroque, Classical and Romantic to contemporary music. The musical journey through time ends in pleasant, modern pieces from the areas of pop and rock music which would add variety to lessons.
Most pieces can be played after 1-2 years of music lessons. Approaching the works is made easier by the enclosed CD which contains all pieces as a demo version and as a play-along version with just piano accompaniment. The edition also contains an easy piano part for accompaniment. It is deliberately kept simple so that the piano accompaniment can also be played by students - for example at concerts in music schools or at competitions.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. Written in a laid-back swing style, it is a minor blues scored for full big band but will work equally well with a smaller combination of instruments as indicated on the front page of the score. The arrangement features plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish confidence within their sections as well as more independence between sections. An open section provides a chance for everyone in the band to have a go at taking a solo. Backing figures are provided on parts and can be played at the director's discretion. Solo sheets are also included for Bb, Eb and Treble and Bass clef instruments with two fully notated choruses. We are always looking for places to go together, as well as excuses to include each other in our own individual travels. One of my personal favorite travel opportunities is the International Double Reed Society conference. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, make new friends and contacts, and make beautiful music. A number of years ago, I started the All Star Double Reed Band that has now premiered over a dozen new pieces for large double reed ensemble, and has recorded an album of those works. As a combined labor of love, I wrote Impressions of Yellowstone for my wife, a concert pianist, to perform with this group.The first movement, “Little Grand Canyon opens with a chorale in the piano illustrating the simple majesty of the great and wondrous park that my wife and I visit annually with her parents. From there, the music exemplifies my impression of this wondrous landscape; beautiful, powerful. A deep valley with a waterfall on one end, it is one of the more beautiful sites to see in Yellowstone.The second movement, Grand Prismatic, is a musical impression of the different perspectives of this very famous Yellowstone landmark. From the overlook, you see a stunning pond with steam emanating from it and surrounded by color. However, if you are to go down and stand next to the hotspot, your perspective changes greatly. Sulfur smells, danger from the soft crust (with boiling sulfuric liquid just below the surface), and a hot, steamy fog of mist permeate the area.In the finale, Old Faithful, tone painting is brought out in full force as the opening piano solo material brings about the image of the geyser bubbling and building below the surface. Then, at the point of explosion, you hear the water falling and the delight of all of the dozens of onlookers who visit this most famous site at Yellowstone every day.The original version, for double reeds, is dedicated the All Star Double Reed Band and my wife, Tammy Miller, who recorded it on the Co-Op Press label.The version for piano and string orchestra is dedicated to Tammy and the National Composers Orchestra who recorded it on the Baldwin Records label.

While the pedal is held down for the entire first section, the left hand plays occasional quarter notes that give the impression of pinpoints of stars. The melody is then passed between the hands, which means it needs to be heard clearly (but not too loudly) As the arrangement continues to grow into fullness, difficulty, and glory, it comes back the calm of the beginning and ends in a ethereal repose. .

Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work’s core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the number-one Hot 100 single of the year for 1972. FUN FACT: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was played as the wake-up music on flight day 9 to the astronauts aboard Apollo 17 on their last day in Lunar orbit (Friday, December 15, 1972) before returning to Earth, thus ending the last human explorations of the Moon. The use of the song was most likely a reference to the face of the Moon below the spacecraft.

It has become a jazz standard, recorded by Wes Montgomery and Stanley Turrentine among others.This arrangement is fairly lengthy (367 measures) running between 7:30 to 8:30 depending on tempo. Tempo should be in the range of 220-240 quarter note beats per minute. There are three extended solos as well as a brief drum solo.Instrumentation is the standard big band: five saxes (a,a,t,t,b), five trumpets (the 5th is optional), four trombones, guitar, piano, bass & drums.The first tenor has a 96 bar ad lib solo. First trombone gets 80 bars, and the piano gets three choruses (the first is unaccompanied). Drums have a 16 bar solo leading back to a D.C. al Coda.Brass parts only have occasional high notes, a couple of high D’s and E flats in the lead trumpet. The most challenging aspect of this arrangement is the quick tempo.
