I used this idea originally in 1977 for a piece for piano solo (also available on Sheet Music Plus). In 1999 I took the same Chopin preludes and did a new version for piano four-hands. Here's the guide to the preludes with their reference to the corresponding Chopin prelude. Prelude I – Chopin Prelude No. 4 Prelude II – Chopin Prelude No. 15 Prelude III – Chopin Prelude No. 24 Prelude IV – Chopin Prelude No. 7 Prelude V – Chopin Prelude No. 2. The duration is 12'00.

The Five Preludes for Piano were written in June of 2024 and reflect the composer’s eclectic musical style. The first prelude exhibits baroque characteristics, The 2nd may resemble some of the early work from the Second Viennese School. The 3rd prelude is much more agitated and dissonant while the 4th contrasts it with more dreamy and impressionistic textures. As a young composer it is often tempting to (try to) to compose serious, heavy pieces, as if to prove our depth as artists. In these pieces I opted for the opposite route, attempting to bring a smile to the listeners' faces.

Juan MarÃa Solare: Acuarelas junto al rÃo inmóvil (Watercolours alongside the still river) five nocturnes for piano solo The still river is the River Plate; the novelist Eduardo Mallea (1902-1982) refers to Buenos Aires as the city next to the still river, an allusion to its lack of haste. This cycle of piano pieces is a collection of five short nocturnes. The first four Acuarelas were composed in Buenos Aires between 9th and 12th April 2007, the fifth piece was conceived on 4th May and written down on 6th May 2007. All five pieces have practically the same formal structure. Concerning the musical language or style, I would classify this work under contemporary classical with interferences from modern jazz and new tango (imagine Astor Piazzolla listening to a recording of Thelonious Monk playing preludes of Alexander Scriabin). The Preludes by Cesar Cui are a fascinating set of pieces, with a distinctive character for each tonality. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit. Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557). A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.Jeffrey Biegel.

Each prelude is one to two minutes in length.Prelude 1: Play-ludeThe main idea of this prelude uses parallel fourths in the left hand with short, dissonant statements in the right hand. The contrasting second idea has a tonal bass line progression below a chromatic figure. The 3/8 time signature gives the piece a quasi-swing feel.Prelude 2: Pray-ludeThis prelude alternates between F major and Gb major, with slow reflective melodic statements over sustained roots. The statements gradually become shorter and shorter until the recapitulation.Prelude 3: Pre-lewdThis whimsical prelude uses a five-note synthetic scale throughout (1, m3, P4, m6, M7), but the scale modulates in a pattern that suggests a standard 16-measure blues progression. There is a repeating figure in the bass using the same modulating scale.Prelude 4: Prelude SolitudeThis slow prelude in 7/4 time has an ostinato bass line that never varies. The six notes of the bass line (Eb, E, F, Ab, A, Bb) form a synthetic scale from which the entire piece is derived.Prelude 5: Pre-ludicrousThis prelude uses the same six-note synthetic scale throughout (C, Eb, E, G, Ab, B). Inspired by Frédéric Chopin's 24 Préludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast – slow – fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

Topographical fingerings provided for the five-finger positions that, linked together, form the melody of this piece. Quick, and to the point.

A Baroque-style prelude using the traditional melodic minor, with the ascending and descending forms strictly observed. Much more Bach-like than Handelian. A simple 4-note figure in the treble, and a five-note response in the bass, with a turn at the top, are used throughout. Arpeggiated chords and a dotted rhythm are also used throughout, to give a sarabande-ish feeling. Reminiscent of Bach's slower preludes, but not the usual torturous Eb or Bb minor found in the WTC. Just under three minutes in duration.
