Ukiyo-e (literally pictures of the floating world) is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, featuring motifs of landscapes, tales from history, the theatre, and pleasure quarters. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. Usually the word ukiyo is literally translated as floating world, referring to a conception of an evanescent world, impermanent, fleeting beauty and a realm of entertainments (kabuki, courtesans, geisha) divorced from the responsibilities of the mundane, everyday world; pictures of the floating world, i.e. ukiyo-e, are considered a genre unto themselves. The novelist Asai Ryoi, in his Ukiyo monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, c. 1661), provides some insight into the concept of the floating world: ... Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating; ... refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world... Ukiyo-e: Pictures of the Floating World was composed for clarinetist Thomas Piercy and pianist Claudine Hickman, who gave the world premiere performance in New York on April 8, 2012, as part of the 15 Minutes of Fame program on the Composer's Voice Concert Series. Published by JMS Composer (A0.749400). Petrichor is the scientific name given to the earthy smell of rain coming into contact with the ground. The work starts with the image of the rain just beginning to occur, with finger snaps, leg slaps, and the sound of palms rubbing together simulating the rain fall. The music starts at a slow tempo and increases over the length of the piece as the downpour accelerates. By the end, one might even imagine walking out onto a porch to enjoy watching the rain continue to fall, as it offers up even a moment of peace.From a rehearsal standpoint, Petrichor is not technically demanding. It focuses on the patterns that occur during rainfall, using them to help build towards the exciting conclusion. Working each pattern independently before bringing them together is very helpful, as it will help lock in the mix of rhythms. The opening does not need to feel rushed and should be allowed to breathe, and each increase in the tempo should not be telegraphed, but should flow from the previous tempo. The ending combines straight eighths and sixteenths with a running triplet pattern between them; the triplet pattern should feel like it sits on top of everything else, almost floating along like a cloud.This was a pleasure to compose, and I hope you enjoy rehearsing and performing Petrichor.

As the settlers kept floating along the river became swifter and more unpredictable. Many of the 1st settlers in this area came from Scotland and Ireland. This movement has a definite Scottish/Irish flair. One can just hear the pipes throughout this piece. .

This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. BOUNCE ETUDES for Solo Timpani is geared towards the college undergraduate or graduate level timpanist.This three movement piece is approximately nine minutes in length. Each movement uses set pitches for each of the four drums. In the first movement, one might imagine some spherical objects that seem to bound along and propel themselves through space and time.Time is suspended for a brief period as the second movement begins. Here objects seem to float in space. The music is interrupted by a quick, fleeting scherzo section. After this music runs its course, the 'floating music returns. Skipping is the best way to describe the third movement. Here the music is mostly driving and aggressive, but at times the music is quite gentle. With a hasty flourish, BOUNCE ETUDES concludes.

New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. This work for horn quartet is in 4 Movements. It is written for a formal performance setting, but could be used for a less serious occasion too. The piece is about 12 minutes in total duration. Here is a brief description of the piece: Movement 1 (Fragments) introduces the sound world of this piece, and features different sounds 'bouncing around' each other to create different melodies and harmonies. Movement 2 (Breakdown) is an exciting rhythmic movement, where all four horns play their independent lines, which join together to create a somewhat 'groovy' melody. This movement is short, entertaining, and would also be a great encore piece on its own. Movement 3 (Reflection) portrays a more relaxed mood, where timing is much more free, and the listener is drawn along through the shifting harmonies by each note in the musical line. It then transforms into a 'floating' section, and segues into the next movement. Movement 4 (Interlude and Finale) revisits the original 'bouncing sounds' idea, progresses to another rhythmically intricate 'groovy' motive, and finally reaches a stable, sonorous melody that showcases the brilliance and majestic sound of all four horns together, giving a satisfying close to this unique work.
