This sonata ‘Pour deux Flutes transversieres sans Basse’ is the first of a set of six published by Boivin in Paris in 1728 as Blavet’s ‘Premier Oeuvre’. They were dedicated ‘a Son Altesse Serenissime Monsieigneur LE PRINCE DE CARIGNAN Par Mr. Blavet ordinaire de la musique de S. A. S.’ on the suitably elaborate title page.The sonata is written for two equal players and has 4 movements, Adagio, Allegro, Affetuoso & Allegro assai. Players of Intermediate ability and above will enjoy the interplay between the parts. The sonatas were printed using the soprano G clef which places the G on the bottom line of the treble staff, a practice which was not uncommon at the time. Blavet was not only the best flautist in France but also an extremely good bassoon player so would have found this clef easier to read from as he was not a keyboard player. This edition has been transcribed to the now established treble clef with G on the second line. Trills shown in the original as + are shown in this edition as tr. The breath marks in bar/measures 36, 39 & 41 in the final movement are Blavet’s. This is the first instance of his practice of marking the breaths which he developed in his opus 2 set of sonatas for flute and which has proved so useful to today’s performers of music of this period. Curiously Blavet used a flat (b) to cancel a sharp instead of a natural.

From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Pachelbel Background Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period. Works Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous, particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard. Influences Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music. Legacy All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works.

The middle section by contrast is in G major and is lyrical before returning to the G minor section then coda. The flute range is just over 2 octaves with the top not being top E flat, (Top D Clarinet,) which only occurs once or twice. I have placed it at intermediate level, but on the youtube link there is the full score for you to judge suitability. Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

The reel is a traditional bright dance originating from Scotland, but reels goes back to the middle ages. This original piece like nearly all reels, is in 2/2 time which may be a good introduction to early intermediate students. It also has only quarter and eighth notes throughout with the occasional half-note so rhythmically quite simple! The instrumental ranges are 2 octaves and the complete score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Intermediate- instrumental parts are 3 pages, piano 6, and it is around 3 minutes in length. NB Other instrumental versions are available.

The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

This is a duet arrangement for Native American style flute in the key of A minor playing the melody, and chromatic Appalachian mountain lap dulcimer playing rhythm backup chords. The Native American style flute arrangement is written in Nakai tablature. R. Carlos Nakai developed this system of tablature notation (commonly known as Nakai tablature) that can be used across a wide variety of flute keys and tunings. He published this in The Art of the Native American Flute (1996) with James Demars, Ken Light and David P. McAllester. This provides resources and support for musicians playing the Native American flute.
