Germaine Tailleferre: Trois Études for two pianos

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534483 Composed by Germaine Tailleferre. 20th Century,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 65 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3534799. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534483). This work was written in the first months of 1942 while Tailleferre was living in Grasse, in the socolled« Free Zone » of occupied France during the Second World War and was completed just asTailleferre was forced to flee France with her daughter. As the wife of Jean Lageat, who had been thesecretary of the French socialist Léon Blum during the « Front Populaire » period just before the Warand who was at that time in the US working against the Vichy Government, and as someone who wasnot unvocal about her political views, this could not have been a comfortable situation. Tailleferre left arecord of what she experienced during this period in an article written for the American music journal «Modern Music » which she wrote shortly after arriving in America in the Spring of 1942 :« Notwithstanding their staunch spirit of resistence, the people under German rule today areincreasingly bowed down under their burdens. By achieving the physical decline of the French, theNazis hope that spiritual collapse will ensue. However, after two years of quasi-famine, France remainspround and great, although the necessity of liberation grows daily more urgent.....For an artist to workunder these conditions is almost impossible. The mere effort of subsisting wastes time and absorbsenergy ; The means to work are also lacking.....Musical composition is made practically impossiblethrough lack of music paper. For more than a year, I sought in vain to find paper in Lyon, Marseillesand Nice on which to copy an orchestral score...Two years of experience under German rule havetaught me that all expressions of pride, dignity, spirit , aspiration of the human will can be made onlyclaudestinely. It is a historical truth that the human mind makes its greatest progress under freedom ».Under such circumstances, it is a miracle that this work exists at all. The three movement work wasdedicated to the famous Marguerite Long, for whom Tailleferre had already written several short worksfor piano solo, and François Lang, a pianist who was closely linked with the Group des Six and whohad performed in the première of the 1934 Concerto Grosso for Two Pianos, 8 Solo Voices, SaxophoneQuartet and Orchestra and for whom Tailleferre wrote two cadenzas for concerti by Mozart and Haydn. The work opens with sunny, optimistism in a mood similar to the opening movement of the ConcertoGrosso, but quickly the mood changes to more dramatic themes. The second movement seems tosubjectively express a rupture with the past and a tragic melancholy. The final third movement isextremely dramatic and almost frightening with it’s force. When Tailleferre left France in the Spring of 1942, having been warned by a neighbor that she wasgoing to be arrested if she didn’t leave immediately, she left the score in a two-piano version, probablydue to the fact that there was no music paper to be had to copy the score. When she returned to Francein 1946, she learned that François Lang had been deported to Auschwitz where he died. Musical life inFrance had been completely changed by the War years. Tailleferre put the work aside and forgot aboutit, perhaps wanting to forget the hardships that she had lived through and the loss of many of her friendsassociated with these years.Tailleferre's version for two pianos is published by Musik Fabrik and the work may be performed inthat version. It is clear however, that the work was intended to be orchestrated and the editors hope thatthe present orchestration will allow the work to finally be presented as Tailleferre conceived duringsome of the darkest years of the Twentieth century.

Greenberg (A0.987847). Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 33 minutes Year of composition: 1995 Program Note: I. With Friends Like These II. Inner Voices III. Little Hands and Little Feet IV. Freund Barry V. Friendly Persuasion VI. All For One and One For All I've known the Alexander String Quartet since 1987. More than just colleagues, they have become my friends: I've traveled with them, performed with them, watched them rehearse, dined with them in their homes and they in mine; I know their children and they know my children. Throughout the time I've known the members of the quartet I have observed the relationship between them, that special bond shared by the members of any touring band, described by one pundit as being like a bad marriage with no sex. Such issues notwithstanding, this particular marriage works. A string quartet represents, perhaps, the ultimate musical compromise between individual incentive and the common good. In a string quartet, by definition, four distinct instrumental voices and four different instrumental roles unite to create a whole greater than its parts. And, lest we forget, behind each instrument is a person, with his own particular attitudes, feelings, needs, and, yes, issues, all of which must be tempered and blended for the common good of a good performance. Among Friends is, its liberties aside, about the four people behind the instruments of the Alexander String Quartet and their relationships with one another; the way they play, rehearse, get along and, on occasion, not get along. The first movement, With Friends Like These is gritty and contentious in tone. The players argue, debate, annoy, tease, irk, cajole, abuse, harass, form brief alliances, heap merde upon, gang up on, and otherwise find endless ways to irritate each other. It is in this movement that the individual characters of the four instrumental parts stand in highest relief: the first violin as coloratura prima donna, forever attempting to soar above it all; the second violin as the voice in the wilderness, the viola as the voice of reason and the 'cello as mover and shaker. The opening of the movement is marked argument in progress; with greatest intensity. The second, third and fourth movements are a series of portraits, played without a break. In movement two, Inner Voices, the second violin and viola are featured in a collegial and decidedly non-contentious dialogue. Movement three, Little Hands and Little Feet, is the quiet center of the quartet. It is here that the first violin finally attains the lyric heights vainly sought in the first movement. The fourth movement is a vigorous dance entitled Freund Barry. This movement honors three great friends: Dr. Barry Gardiner, whose friendship and support made the writing of this quartet possible; Gustav Mahler, whose Symphony No. 4, second movement (Freund Heine) inspired this one; and Sandy Wilson, who first encouraged me to compose my second string quartet (Child's Play) for the Alexander in 1987 and whose boisterous 'cello is Freund Barry's alter-ego. The fifth movement is entitled Friendly Persuasion. Rapid fire repeated notes, accompanimental figures and melodic lines are shuttled about from voice to voice, each time elaborated or altered in some way. In this way the music slowly metamorphoses, ultimately arriving at a version of the argumentative music that concluded the first movement. Movement six, All For One and One For All is a fast, brief coda/finale, during which the quartet plays primarily in unison, the musical antithesis of the contentious argument that began the quartet. Among Friends was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress and the Alexander String Quartet. Among Friends i.

Published by Kim Diehnelt (A0.1078108). I wrote “Cantilever Four†in the Spring of 2022 for a friend’s studio recital. The horn teacher wanted one ensemble piece on the program which would allow for the second and fourth horn players to shine and make music confidently. This Horn Quartet stays within a comfortable range, using relatively straight forward rhythms and technique, while creating a dynamic, rich, and colorful work. Each player has an opportunity for self-expression and full participation in making music in a horn ensemble. Duration: 5 minutes. Includes score and parts. 2022.

Baritone Horn TC,Euphonium,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552841 Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Holiday,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #3447443. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552841). Baritone Horn version of Moment Musicaux, Op. 94 (D. 780) No. 3 by Franz Schubert, published in 1828. Duration: 1:53 Score 6 pg. 54 ms. Alto Sax 1 pg. Piano part 3 pg. One of Schubert's most well-known pieces. This is an effective recital encore due to its brevity and range of expression. Could work well for a variety of occasions: wedding receptions, church services (Easter), and anniversaries. It seems like a pleasant dance, unlike some previous dance music. Schubert improvised these dances at parties for his friends.  Although conceived on-the-fly, these dances are the work of a genius. Composers have similarly elevated dance music to artistic status. As a result, they freed it from the original purpose of dancing. Certainly, the older masters used the dance forms as vehicles for complex treatments. Here, however, Schubert retains the dance-like quality while finally expressing his innermost thoughts and emotions. The dance is certainly filled with a doleful expression, yet the texture remains even more light and refined. Therefore, to perform these with sensitivity we probably need to use a light but accurate touch. The accompaniment pattern needs to be crisp and delicate – probably even in the more forceful parts. The piano pedal should also be used very carefully so as a result not to blur the outline. Instead, it should contribute to the dynamic quality of the piece. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.

Alto Saxophone Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533545 Composed by Andersen Viana. 20th Century,Concert,Standards. Individual part. 7 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3017637. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533545). This was the first piece composed for the saxophone by ANDERSEN VIANA. The piece uses two contrasting sections: one related to violence and psychological instability in the big cities, and other; related to the nostalgic moods found in Rio de Janeiro in the past. It was composed specially for a friend, saxophonist and Doctor Mecenas MAGNO. Monologue for a friend is a rhapsodic and brilliant piece of great effect, also using rhythms and reminiscences of the music called Choros and Samba so popular in the Rio de Janeiro city at the 40’ths and 50'ths. It uses also free structures and little allusions to minimalism of Riley and Reich. The work is divided in six sections: Tormentà to, Scherzando, Lento, Lentissimo, reexposition (Tormentà to) and Coda. Born in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, he has a Ph.D. in Music Composition from the Federal University of Bahia. He began composing at the age of thirteen and became a professor at the age of nineteen. He has studied in courses and seminars about music and film in several official institutions with Ennio Morricone, Ettore Scolla, Giussepe Tornatore, E. Polizzi, Radamés Gnatalli, Max Rostal, Oilliam Lanna, S. Vianna (Accademia Chigiana di Siena, Reale Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Arts Academy of Rome, Royal University College of Music Stockholm, UFMG, UFBA), among others. He currently works as a composer-conductor and cultural producer, as well as a professor at the Clóvis Salgado Foundation, Palácio das Artes, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in addition to offering lectures and workshops in various institutions both in Brazil and abroad. His first teacher wa his father, Sebastião Vianna (assistant and reviser for the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos), and most recently furthered his studies in other institutions in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden. He has also published over forty articles both in Brazil and Europe. Viana has received 25 awards in Argentina, Brazil, Europe and the USA, including the Prix de Composition at the First Composition Competition Festin Choral 2013 in the city of Billère (France), first prize at the Susanville Symphony Composition Competition 2012 (USA), first prize in the international composition contest of Lys Music Orchestra 2001 in Belgium, first prize and the audience prize in the Lambersart 2006 International Contest of Composition in France. To date, he has composed 315 musical pieces for voices, chamber, symphonic as well as electronic instruments. Viana has also composed film scores for the following films: A Cartomante, Retalhos do Taquaril, Bem Próximo do Mal (Next Evil), Jogando para o Amanhã, O Próximo Passo, Gun’s Speech, Trem Fantasma, 3:00:AM, Corações Ardentes, Filhos de Adão, Perdidos em Abbey Road, Vivalma, Manuelzão e Bananeira, Ofélia, Opostos, Minas Portuguesa, O Homem da Cabeça de Papelão, Convict, Ser Humano (Human Being), Um Dia Qualquer, Nego, Reenactment, Desafios and Oswaldo França Júnior.

Published by Mary Ann Joyce-Walter (A0.989242). Mary Ann Joyce-Walters writes: The first two sections of In Anguish and Hope are based on verses from two terrifying Psalms; the third section is a setting of a passage from Micah. I chose to use these texts after listening to a friend of mine speak about the death of her son.I became keenly aware of her personal and genuine feelings of rage against God, which were so similar to David’s Why do You hide Your face and forget our persecution and our oppression? Christ’s My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? and Elie Wiesel’s Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. I realized that a far more difficult question (and perhaps more deeply personal) than that of asking God to forgive us is Can we forgive God?After asking that intimate and bold question, the words of Micah recall that peace, based on justice, will come one day: you shall be at peace and unafraid.…nations shall not lift up sword against nation….you shall bear fruit in justice and peace.

Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1462). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.Winner of the 2nd prize in Bo Ejeby Förlag’s composition award 2021.The Lebanese American philosopher and poet Khalil Gibran’s book The Prophet has accompanied me for a long time, ever since I was first introduced to it by a friend, a Lebanese refugee, many years ago. I’ve returned to it often, to read and to make use of passages in compositions. The Prophet is a wondrous treasure trove of amazing poetry – covering life, death, and everything in between: love, friendship, children, work, power. And time.I always focus carefully on any texts I wish to use, read and rhythmize them in different ways they could be read and interpreted, and choose words and sentences that deserve to be emphasized, to stop and ponder on, or simply let go and flow. So too in this, in my opinion, magnificent poem. Sometimes there’s very little movement, sometimes it courses on in a mighty and unfathomable manner. Never predictable. I hope I managed to bring out the timelessness. – Sven Hagvil.

By Herbie Hancock. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Score, Set of Parts. 22 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Arranged for Clarinet Quintet & optional drumset, "Watermelon Man" is a jazz standard written by Herbie Hancock, first released on his debut album, Takin' Off (1962), in a grooving hard bop version that featured improvisations by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon.<br> <br> A single of the tune reached the Top 100 of the pop charts. Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaría released the tune as a latin pop single the next year on Battle Records, where it became a surprise hit, reaching #10 on the pop charts. Santamaría's recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Hancock radically re-worked the tune, combining elements of funk, for the album Head Hunters (1973).<br> <br> Hancock's first version was released as a grooving hard bop record, and featured improvisations by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon. Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaría released the tune as a Latin pop single and it became a surprise hit, reaching No. 10 on the pop chart.[2] Santamaría's recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Hancock radically re-worked the tune, combining elements of funk, for the album Head Hunters (1973).<br> <br> Hancock wrote the piece to help sell his debut album as a leader, Takin' Off (1962), on Blue Note Records; it was the first piece of music he had ever composed with a commercial goal in mind. The popularity of the piece, due primarily to Mongo Santamaría, paid Hancock's bills for five or six years. Hancock did not feel the composition was a sellout however, describing that structurally, it was one of his strongest pieces due to its almost mathematical balance.<br> <br> The form is a sixteen bar blues. Recalling the piece, Hancock said, "I remember the cry of the watermelon man making the rounds through the back streets and alleys of Chicago. The wheels of his wagon beat out the rhythm on the cobblestones." The tune, based on a bluesy piano riff, drew on elements of R&B, soul jazz and bebop, all combined into a pop hook. Hancock joined bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins in the rhythm section, with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone. Hancock's chordal work draws from the gospel tradition, while he builds his solo on repeated riffs and trilled figures.<br> <br> Hancock filled in for pianist Chick Corea in Mongo Santamaría's band one weekend at a nightclub in The Bronx when Corea gave notice that he was leaving. Hancock played the tune for Santamaría at friend Donald Byrd's urging. Santamaría started accompanying him on his congas, then his band joined in, and the small audience slowly got up from their tables and started dancing, laughing and having a great time. Santamaría later asked Hancock if he could record the tune. On December 17, 1962, Mongo Santamaría recorded a three-minute version, suitable for radio, where he joined timbalero Francisco "Kako" Baster in a cha-cha beat, while drummer Ray Lucas performed a backbeat. Santamaría included the track on his album Watermelon Man (1962). Santamaría's recording is sometimes considered the beginning of Latin boogaloo, a fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with those of R&B<br> <br> Hancock re-recorded the tune for Head Hunters (1973), combining synthesizers with a Sly Stone and James Brown funk influence, adding an eight-bar section. Hancock described his composition "Chameleon", also from Head Hunters, to Down Beat magazine in 1979: "In the popular forms of funk, which I've been trying to get into, the attention is on the rhythmic interplay between different instruments. The part the Clavinet plays has to fit with the part the drums play and the line the bass plays and the line that the guitar plays. It's almost like African drummers where seven drummers play different parts"; "Watermelon Man" shares a similar construction. A live version was released on the double LP Flood (1975), recorded in Japan.<br> <br> On the intro and outro of the tune, percussionist Bill Summers blows into beer bottles imitating hindewhu, a style of singing/whistle-playing found in Pygmy music of Central Africa. Hancock and Summers were struck by the sound, which they heard on the ethnomusicology LP, The Music of the Ba-Benzélé Pygmies (1966), by Simha Arom and Geneviève Taurelle.<br> <br> This version was often featured on The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s segments.<br> <br> The tune is a jazz standard and has been recorded over two hundred times. Hancock's recording has been sampled in "1-900-LL-Cool-J" from Walking with a Panther (1989) by LL Cool J, "Open Your Eyes" from Organized Konfusion (1991) by Organized Konfusion, "Smoke Some Kill" from Smoke Some Kill (1988) by Schoolly D, and "Pocket Full of Furl" from Uptown 4 Life (1996) by U.N.L.V. In 2003, pianist David Benoit covered the song from his album Right Here, Right Now.<br> <br> A live and funky performance at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival Casino Lights '99 featured Fourplay, George Duke, Boney James and Kirk Whalum trading choruses, and Rick Braun.Arranged for Clarinet Quintet & optional drumset, "Watermelon Man" is a jazz standard written by Herbie Hancock, first released on his debut album, Takin' Off (1962), in a grooving hard bop version that featured improvisations by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon.<br> <br> A single of the tune reached the Top 100 of the pop charts. In 2003, pianist David Benoit covered the song from his album Right Here, Right Now.<br> <br> A live and funky performance at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival Casino Lights '99 featured Fourplay, George Duke, Boney James and Kirk Whalum trading choruses, and Rick Braun.

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1500207 By Elton John. By Bernie Taupin and Elton John. Arranged by David J. Miller. 20th Century,Classical,Pop,Rock. 7 pages. Sterling Music Editions #1076285. Published by Sterling Music Editions (A0.1500207). Sir Elton John's Funeral for a Friend opens his 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This instrumental track continues seamlessly into his radio hit Love Lies Bleeding. The music was written as the answer to what he would like to have performed at his own funeral. This piece has been previously covered live by both Dream Theater and Metallica; and we now present the version covered by Barclay Brass! In our live performance at the link below, we segued into Billy Joel's Piano Man, his hit from the same year. It was our intention to bring together these two great rock pianists with a suite of music from 1973.The synthesizer colors lend themselves perfectly to the sound of a brass choir. Each group of instruments are featured as the mood of the music changes from somber, to angry, to hopeful. This arrangement (complete with the 16 seconds of wind as heard on the album) works as an opener, closer, or anywhere on a concert to create a shift in the flow of your program. To hear how this arrangement works live, click on the link below! For more brass arrangements by David J. Piano,Vocal,Voice - Digital Download SKU: A0.913979 Composed by Arthur Breur. Pop,Rock. Score. 8 pages. Floating Home Music #4780747. Published by Floating Home Music (A0.913979). This piece was commissioned by Annette Saarinen for her granddaughter Aurora, who happens to be studying chemistry (among other things) so she can pursue her goals of working on environmental restoration.Composing a song that is a gift for a friend's granddaughter is fraught with a number of perils, particularly when one of the inspirations is that the recipient of the song likes Adele tunes. Adele's songs are mostly romantic songs about lost or unrequited love, so the lyrics couldn't really come across as being FROM the grandmother.Knowing that Aurora is studying chemistry, however, gave me a clue as to how I could make the piece work nicely: make it sound like a love song about the chemistry between two people, when in fact, the lyrics are talking about how our use of chemistry is both responsible for the state of our environment and the means we must use to fix it.I did use my usual trick of starting with words or names, and have composed both Aurora and Chemistry into the notes of the piece, the former in the accompaniment, and the latter as the foundation for the verse melody.Duration: 3m54s.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534554 Composed by Thierry Pélicant. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 136 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #4283537. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534554). In 2004, the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise commissioned its musical director, t Thierry Pélicant, this concerto for the late Claude Caens, the principal contrabass of this orchestra. This great artist, who was friends with everyone in this ensemble, wanted everyone to have a part in the festivities, not only the strings, but also the winds, the horns, the trumpets and the percussion, and also that they all should be heard ! Thierry Pélicant wrote therefore a concerto which is at once very symphonic – and for this reason, it is strongly advised that the contrabass be amplified – but also a piece which would express the friendship between the orchestra and the soloist. This concerto strives to be both warm and lyrical : it is not a virtuoso showpiece, inspite of the real technical that it offers to the soloist and which he would do well to try to hid them from the audience. It is also not a battle between the orchestra and this gentle giant : they stroll together, sometimes joyously, sometimes with nostalgia and go through the strong storms which do not fail to present themselves, smiling together and finding them to be envigorating. The work is scored for (2(Pic)2(EH)22/2200/Timp/2perc/strings) and lasts aproximately 23 minutes. The orchestral parts are on rental from the pubilsher. The piano reduction with the solo part is available for sale on this site.Thierry Pélicant was born in 1957 at Sainte-Adresse, France. After studying the organ and the horn, his meeting with Jean-Claude Hartemann, the Musical Director of the Opéra Comique in Paris lead him to decide to explore conducting. He was the student of Haremann for fifteen years. He is the Musical Director of the André Messager Orchestre and has also directed the Orchestre Philharmonique de l’Oise since 1980, one of the oldest French orchestras, since it was founded in 1750. A passionate ssupporter of French music, Pélicant reconstructed the Messe solennelle of L.V.A Boïeldieu and Te Deum of 1792 by Philidor and premièred and recorded the Suite Parnassienne, Massenet’s last work. At the same time, he has also served the music of our time in premièring or recording the works of Dazzi, Marchand, Braconnier, Bénard, Drouin, Preschez, etc. As a composer, musical grammar and stylistic debates only interest him from afar. As a true gourmet (since cooking is another of his passions), he strives to write the music that pleases him, that would be enjoyable to play and which would be enjoyable to hear, hopefully with real pleasure and in which he tries to express the emotions and the pleasant or surprising states of being which, to hime, these works are tied. Through this process, he has created concertos (for oboe, for bassoon, for organ, for contrabass), Escales & paysages, ma monumental literary concerto for narrator, piano and orchestra, written for his friend Dominique Preschez, Operas (Histoires comme ça, Ribouldingue, Élise et le fantôme) ; With the poet Luis Porquet, he wrote the song cycle Ombre légère (for soprano, harp and orchestre), Rhapsodie du Havre (for tenor and chamber orchestra, a commission from the Forum de Normandie to commemorate the 500 years of the founding of the city Le Havre), Et de toi, Bethleem, Christmas oratorio for baritone, chorus and orchestra and, finally, commissioned by the Orchestre de l’Oise in honor of the centennial of the First World War 14, fresque de la Grande Guerre, for the tenor Daniel Gà lvez-Vallejo, children’s chorus and orchestra. In the area of chamber music, he has written a sonata for horn and piano, for the Festival de Giverny, Borée (quintet for oboe and strings), Sextuor d’été, and Milonga (septet inspired by the World of Tango Music). Published in 2005, his novel Carnets de Walter Crane, explores the sufferings of a composer who has the obligation to write a string quartet ...
